It’s trick or treat time in my neighborhood, and publishers are playing along by offering lengthy free previews of forthcoming novels as an enticing temporary fix for fans (in the case of two new James Patterson offerings) or as a way of introducing undiscovered gems (in the case of a free preview of an intriguing new Oliver Pötzsch thriller that AmazonCrossing has brought out just in time for Hallowe’en). We’re sometimes a bit suspicious of the implicit bait-and-switch nature of such deals, but we reap what we sow. During the past couple of weeks we’ve offered our readers substantial free excerpts from two Joe Konrath books that have moved with lightning speed up the ranks of Kindle bestsellers, so who are we to complain?
