Here’s the set-up:

Love At Absolute Zero is about a physicist who tries to apply the tools of science to finding a soul mate. Specifically, Gunnar Gunderson, a 32-year-old physicist at the University of Wisconsin, gets a promotion, and all he can think of now is finding a wife, causing his research to falter. To meet his soul mate within three days–that’s what he wants and all time he can carve out–he and his team are using the scientific method, to riotous results.

Is it romance from the man’s POV? Is it literature? We think it is both, and not in bad company as such.

  • “As if Einstein didn’t struggle hard enough failing at a unified field theory,” says Philip Persinger, author of Do The Math, “Meeks ups the ante by tossing philosophy, anthropology, hashish and love (with a capital L) into the mix. And while we’re so sorry, Uncle Albert, in Love At Absolute Zero, Meeks succeeds absolutely.”
  • “I’ve read both of Meeks’s short story collections and The Brightest Moon of the Century,” says author Kevin Gerard (Conor and the Crossworlds). “I roared through Love At Absolute Zero in a day and a half. Meeks’s prose is carefully crafted, his characters compelling and entertaining. I love everything he writes, and I recommend Love At Absolute Zero without reservation.”

Anchee Min is a terrific writer. I first learned of her a few years ago on C-Span’s Book Notes, where she gave a speech at a college, talking about her harsh childhood and teen years in Mao’s China, and finally reaching the US under the false pretense of going to college, when at the time, she knew only two words of English – “Thank you”, which she used over and over during her immigration interview, not understanding a word of their gibberish. Somehow immigration allowed her into the US, and through diligent study and learning English from Sesame Street, ten years later she wrote a best selling book in English, Red Azalea, the account of her brutal early life, then her life in America. I bought the book based solely on her wonderful story and winsome personality on C-Span. I was not disappointed. The book was terrific. Now I’ve just downloaded this one. Steven – you’ve made my day! Thanks.

This is a great price for Love at Absolute Zero! I read and loved the book, and thought that Meeks delivered his story with a lot of zest and verve. The plight of Gunnar was one that was filled with with a piquant brand of humor, but also with empathy and sincerity. I have read quite a few of Meeks’ books, but this was by far my favorite! If you are in need of a book that features hero with heart, who is on a quest to find love in an unexpected and very different way, you will love this book. It was delightful, poignant, and engagingly real.
