Here’s the set-up:

Chains that bind the soul are stronger than iron…

One step ahead of demonic slavemasters, Leitos flees across a sun-scorched realm littered with the relics of mankind’s destruction. No matter which way he turns, enemies stalk the shadows clad in fiendish flesh, or hunt in plain sight wearing the faces of men.

Thrust into a world his slave’s eyes have never seen, Leitos struggles to heed his dying grandfather’s command: “Run and hide. Find the Crown of the Setting Sun beyond the Mountains of Fire, and there seek out the Brothers of the Crimson Shield.” Such are the words of a madman … yet they are his only hope.

About The Author

Author page of anti-fantasy epic fantasy writer James A. West! If you like leaner, fast-paced anti-fantasy, you’ve come to the right place. What is anti-fantasy you ask? It’s the new fantasy! Shorter stand-alone books that go somewhere, no elves, dwarves, or dragons, and definitely no heroes or orphaned farm boys that save the day at the last minute.

When James was thirteen years old he read The Talisman, by Stephen King and Peter Straub, and a seed of an idea was planted that someday he, too, would create different worlds and realities.

After a stint in the US Army, a year as a long-haul truck driver, and a couple as a log home builder, he enrolled at the University of Montana. There, he majored in Psychology and, by chance, took a creative writing course. Words started to flow, and worlds were born.

James lives in Montana with his wife and his bodyguard, a Mini-Schnauzer named Jonesy.

Here’s the set-up:

First in the award-winning Bo Bradley mystery series, CHILD OF SILENCE introduces the much-loved sleuth whose big heart and quirky wit help her deal with both an impossible job and a psychiatric disorder her Irish grandmother called “the sight.” An amateur artist, Bo would rather be painting, but when a child is in danger she risks everything, even her life.

Thirty miles east of San Diego, in the dusty heart of the California high desert, lies the Barona Ranch Indian Reservation. This is desolate country, marked by lone pines, winding canyons, and granite hills. It is here that the boy was found, tied to a mattress in an abandoned mountain shack.

The case is assigned to Bo Bradley, a child abuse investigator with San Diego’s juvenile court system. It is meaningful job, and it pays for Bo’s few indulgences, like her books on Indian lore and the huge canvasses for her paintings, based on ancient Native American rock drawings.

Bo takes her profession seriously, and she abides by its cardinal rule; never get involved with the child-victim. This has not always been easy for a sensitive woman whose emotions ride perilously close to the surface. Now, with this four-year-old boy, it proves impossible.

He is a non-Indian who calls himself Weppo, and he has been classified as mentally impaired, making him a high risk for abuse. But something in Weppo’s intense gleaming gaze strikes a deep chord in Bo. She knows that look. In the eyes of her late, deaf sister, she has seen it before. Weppo is not at all impaired; he is deaf.

Inspired by this new knowledge, Bo sets out to interview the Paiute mystic, the woman they call “Seize the Dark,” who found the boy. Driving along pine scented trails into the Indian country she so loves, Bo feels as if a strange force is leading her onward, an intuition that builds when she meets “Seize the Dark” and the old crone confides that “spirits” led her to Weppo; “I saw the boy with blood on his mouth.”

After visiting the shack, Bo wonders, had the deaf child been tied up because there was no other way of saying “Stay here. I’ll be back”? An inner voice tells her as much. And she knows she must listen, for it also tells her that Weppo is in great danger.

A poisoned-tipped bullet soon proves the point–as two thugs break into the hospital and attempt to murder the boy. Pushed beyond the point of no return and into a dangerous manic state, Bo bends the rules and swings into action.
Risking personal involvement and professional ruin at the hands of her by-the-book supervisor, she vows to unearth the truth surrounding this child of silence. It is a mission that will take her from the ancient sands of the California desert to the gilded mansions of Houston’s political set and back, as Bo Bradley mounts a desperate struggle to save Weppo–and herself–from certain death.

When they discover that the smallest amongst them holds the key to removing the scourge that threatens to destroy their world, they begin an epic journey to a rumoured safe zone high in the Himalayas. A journey that will pit them against their own worst fears and the most terrible dangers- both human and undead.

Here's the set-up:
Cocky surfer Alex only cares about the future. Who cares about the things of the past like an old house or an old friend? But one February night as he recklessly takes to the road during a snowstorm, he discovers that the past may have some plans for him. When his life is saved by the troubled spirit of a local youth who perished during the historic “Blizzard of 1888,” he agrees to rescue a house from the hands of a greedy land developer. But when he enlists the help of some forgiving friends, they dig up a National Treasure… and some controversy.

With assistance from a “hottie” of an Historian and a colorful antiquities dealer, Alex hopes to ride a wave of redemption. Can he rescue a piece of local and national history, reunite his boyhood friend with his native roots and regain the respect of friends and family?
One Reviewer Notes:
Full Snow Moon is the YA debut of author Lisa Begin-Kruysman and it is everything a good YA book should be. It is filled with modern adventure that begins the night young Alex Van Note wrecks his Jeep in the middle of a snowstorm. Assisting in Alex’s rescue is the ghost of one Eli Hampton who went missing during the Great East Coast Blizzard of 1888. Eli has a mission for Alex, help him get home, unfortunately for Eli is historic home is about to be torn down to make room for a modern strip mall. Alex has his work cut out for him.

Begin-Kruysman keeps an interesting narrative going throughout the story as well as peppering the story with facts about the expedition of Lewis and Clark, the Peace Medals, the Lenni Lenape people and the Sand Hill Indians. She maintains the reader’s interest by keeping the pace going and the tension in the story evolving.

I found the characters in Full Snow Moon to be interesting and realistic. Stereotypes were avoided and the characters were, for the most part, well-rounded individuals. All the characters were late teenagers poised on the cusp of developing adulthood and the challenges they faced as a result of the storyline would help define who they would come to be in the future.

I loved the way Begin-Kruysman worked historical facts and details into the story. It was done with perfect timing and in such a way that it was interesting, not just superfluous details. I cared not only about the living characters, but also about young dead Eli, his family and his ancestral home. I was alarmed by the statistics that showed how quickly land is being destroyed and developed in the US and how we are losing the character of our cities and towns in the race to update and modernize.

Begin-Kruysman opened my eyes to all of this and more through the story of one historic house and one family. Alex dug for the information that would help him solve the mystery posed by Eli and the house, it wasn’t supernaturally handed to him and his research made what he learned even more interesting to me as a reader. It kept things vital and alive and well rooted in the present even though the problem that was being solved had begun long ago on the fateful nights of the Blizzard of 1888. I would definitely recommend this story to both adults and YA readers who are looking for something out of the ordinary that mixes fact with fiction in a blend that represents the best of each.

Early alchemists believed all things in the universe were comprised of varying ratios of four basic, natural elements — earth, air, fire and water. They had obviously never been to a city. Or anywhere with public restrooms.

They’d probably never seen an ant farm either or Manhattan-style clam chowder. In the city, asphalt, broken glass, paper cups and vomit appear to be the elemental building blocks. In general, many unsavory elements are drawn into the city by the bright lights, thus providing further proof of the old adage that nothing pretty ever flocks to a street lamp. And that linoleum is bad for your genitals. The city is a tough ecosystem in which to survive unprotected. Use condoms.

These are the words that begin your fateful journey into the wild, weird and wacky world of “City Chicken – An Urban Guide with one Illustration”. Don’t say that you weren’t warned. And, please, you’ve spent way more money on things that weren’t nearly as much fun – remember the rubber shoes that smelled like dog pee? Or the dill latte’ that made you spit out the car window? Um-hmm, I’m just sayin’…

From the reviewer:

A witty commentary on urban living that should not be missed! Buy it; read it, and laugh out loud. You won’t regret it.  –  “Books! Books! Books!”

Having been a newt in a former life, Tommy desperately felt the need to move to Seattle in the early 1990’s. He regrets leaving his homeland of Michigan only because now he can no longer use his right hand to illustrate the outline of the lower peninsula of his birthplace. The state of Washington is shaped more like a breaded veal cutlet and is therefore more difficult to pantomime unless you’re at Denny’s.

Although having been accused of bringing his midwest values to the ultra-hip Seattle, he has since been assimilated and now has a tattoo and mostly black clothing. Seattle has been very good for Tommy and he happily lives there now with his partner, a cat, two dogs and lots of lint rollers to get that pet hair off his black clothing.

Since its official launch in January 2012, The Eighth Sea has already had more than 45,000 downloads and has ranked #1 in both Historical Fiction and Historical Romance categories on Amazon.com.

Have You Found Your Eighth Sea?

In the cold, black hold of a sailing ship, a young woman lies dying, tormented that her death will mean nothing. No one will know. No one will care. Only the will to find a purpose for her life keeps breath in her exhausted body.

Far away, a soft Carolina breeze touches a mother’s face as she peers into the night sky, agonizing over the loss of her infant daughter nineteen years before. A haunting vision that will not leave her—it whispers of a living tie, still unbroken, to that baby long ago. Worlds apart and unaware of one another, the mother and daughter fight their lonely battles for survival.

Between them—a man rising to greatness with the new America will bring them together.

In 1769, on the shores of St. Christopher in the West Indies, Weston and Emily Emerson are devastated by the sight of their infant daughter’s blanket floating among the splintered remains of a lifeboat. The voyage that began with promise of a new beginning in America ends in tragedy when a violent storm separates them from their child. Believing their daughter has perished, the heartbroken Emersons continue their voyage to the Colonies, not knowing Brenna was rescued.

Nineteen years later, Brenna, unaware of her true identity, begins an odyssey that will take her far from her dismal existence on St. Christopher. A chance encounter with a mysterious stranger will forever change the course of her life. In the old Roman city of Bath, Nathan begins an unrelenting search for Brenna that sweeps across England, involving romance, murder, and intrigue.

The themes of this story are universal: a long journey; separation and return; uncertainty; searching and finding; the search for understanding God’s will amidst tragedy; and finally, the realization that people can be bound together forever.

The Eighth Sea is a passionate love story involving two unforgettable characters—Brenna and Nathan. Their story is our story—finding our place in the world, the meaning of our lives, our way home. Brenna’s solution is to set sail beyond the only world she has ever known and into her eighth sea. The story is inspirational, and its romance is deep and enduring.

Struggling to triumph are three major characters: Brenna—determined to find her place in the world yet haunted by the shadows of abandonment and self-doubt; Emily—plagued with grief over the loss of her only child an unable to shake a disturbing sense that something is unresolved; and Nathan—strong and charismatic, discovering that in his search for Brenna, he has found himself. Their story is a tribute to the human experiences of good overcoming evil, the power of persistence, seeking God, and finally, of love enduring against all odds.

The Eighth Sea is hard to put down, a deep and enduring romance, a plot filled with unexpected twists and the characters hard to get out of one’s mind…an inspiring journey into the unknown. A book club must read!

Here’s the set-up:

May I pray for you? Five words that would forever change my life. No, I am neither a priest nor rabbi, but I was the recipient of those words from a doctor several years ago when being told that I was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer and had a small chance of survival, and included the phrase as the opening passage in my book, A Call to Faith. Although surviving cancer is a recurrent theme, it is weaved throughout the text in the genre of inspirational and religious bodies of work, similar in vein to The Shack or 90 Minutes in Heaven. The struggles are real and give expression to both grief and hope. The events encountered in the story are true. The story is my story and expressed from a third person point of view.

The story is set in Charleston and finds its characters meandering throughout the Lowcountry. Young and handsome, beautiful wife and children, and a small fortune before the age of thirty. He had it all – or did he? Skip Sibley (main character) never knew his marine aviator father who died in a plane crash when he was young. Struck with the tragedy of a younger sister who committed suicide in college and who continued to pay apparitional visits to Skip in times of need. Encounters with God at just the appropriate time when giving up on life was more than a thought. But his toughest battles may still lie ahead of him; finding his faith in God through cancer and divorce.

This faith-based work takes its readers on a tour of the South from churches to hospitals. Southern flavor is established as the Sibley family seeks help from Gullah native Ms. Janie, who cares for Skip and the children during their time of need. The story attempts to show resilience in the face of adversity that comes into each of our lives, and that only through finding a relationship with God can we ensure that life will continue beyond death. It can touch the hearts of those who have lived or visited the Lowcountry, or who have lost loved ones to cancer, suicide or accidental death.
