Here’s the set-up:

Jack Shadow. He’s heard them – every one of them. The jokes. They all start out the same. “See, this guy walks into a bar…” Well, that’s not him. That guy who walked into a bar.

He’s the guy who walked out.

It’s not amnesia. Near as anyone knows, he just doesn’t have a past. Near as anyone knows – or admits to. He doesn’t walk round a corner, and some guy from a car shoots at him because of something he did long ago. Sure. Guys shoot at him. Hell, women too. But not for long ago. Mostly for last week. Where ‘last week’ is any week you choose. No, he just walked out of a bar.
Were there piles of dead bodies behind him? A stacked deck he was dealing, or one he was dealt? He doesn’t know. Or care. But they were waiting, and they took him. The Dragon. Took him to make a difference. To wait for the time a beat of a gnat’s wing could change tomorrow. And Jack’s the gnat.

Jack walked out of a bar. The rest – the rest will be history. Some day. Not that he’ll be in it. Nobody remembers the gnats. Not if they did their job right. And Jack’s the best there is.

Jack Shadow. Because some days – the last thing you need is a good guy.

From Kirkus Reviews

“…portrays with emotional depth and complexity”

“…fast-paced romp with plenty of plot twists”

“An enjoyable, intelligent read that triumphs”

One Amazon Reviewer Notes

“Lee Geiger has managed to go where all but a few fear to tread. On top of creating a compelling detective/murder-mystery novel in the spirit of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, he has been able to meld tremendous humor with unusual insight. While I wasn’t expecting to be treated to a thought-provoking love story, this element of the novel was artfully crafted without being sensationalized. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next from this highly gifted and creative literary genius.” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

Hicks has an almost uncanny ability to transport the reader into the inner workings of the minds of all the characters. The reader truly empathizes the the characters and yet is locked in a paralyzing fear concerning their fate!Warning, this novel is not for the faint of heart. Not only does it provide the reader with a rollercoaster ride of emotion but Hicks presents a very knowledgeable view of child abuse and its consequences.I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a well written thriller with a social conscience.

Steven Lee Gilbert’s Riveting Thriller A Lovely, Indecent Departure is Our eBook of the Day, Just $1.99 on Kindle, with 4.2 Stars on 22 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample

Here’s the set-up for Steven Lee Gilbert’s A Lovely, Indecent Departure, Just $1.99 on Kindle:

A Lovely, Indecent Departure is the riveting and emotionally-charged debut from a promising new voice in literary thrillers, and a captivating story of a mother’s love and desperation set amidst the heart wrenching landscape of child custody.

Anna Miller wants only one thing, her son, and she will do anything to keep him. When a district court awards custody of Oliver to his father, she abducts the five year old and flees to Italy where with her family’s help they disappear into the fabric of her native homeland.

Told in prose that is both stripped-down and overpowering, Gilbert shapes the everyday conflict of child custody into a stunning search for sense of worth. Standing in the young woman’s way is Evan Meade, the boy’s guileful and mean-spirited father, who hires a private investigator when the efforts of the embattled local sheriff, Monroe Rossi, fail to track them down. But as the investigation draws them all closer to Anna, Evan’s true nature betrays itself and the question of what’s in the child’s best interest becomes not so clear anymore.

Objectively detailed, in a voice that refuses to intrude on the minds of its characters, A Lovely, Indecent Departure, captures in stark detail a world in which modern archetypes are turned upside down and shows what an extraordinary splash Steven Lee Gilbert has made with his first novel.

From the reviewers:

“The well-crafted plot is meted out at a steady pace, continually feeding readers’ need to know and simultaneously whetting the appetite for more.”–Kirkus Reviews

“Riveting…perfect for any kind of literary escape.”–The Wake Weekly

“A Lovely, Indecent Departure is a choice and much recommended addition to general fiction collections.”–Midwest Book Review

“Gilbert has written a masterful debut.”– Sandy Kirkland, Booksie’s Blog

“The quality in this book is a perfect example of Indie authors being able to hold their own in regards to larger publishing house authors and that those readers who dismiss Indie authors are truly missing out.”–Naomi Blackburn, Founder Sisterhood of the Traveling Book

“…an unassuming work, one that doesn’t seek to draw you in with cheap gimmicks and plot tricks. It presents itself as it is, quiet, steady, and ultimately charming.”–Shannon Fox, Isle of Books

From the author:

Author Awards:  2007 Emerging Artist Grant for Literature, Durham Arts Council

Thank you for visiting my Amazon Author Page and for considering my book. Writing it was a process that covered several years, during which the manuscript underwent many, many drafts and required much patience on the part of myself as the writer, as well as my wife and family.

When in 2007, with their support, I chose to pursue writing full time, I had no real idea of what I was getting myself into. I only knew I wanted to write. Such an endeavor is not without risk and in the months leading up to my leaving my day job, we adjusted our lifestyle and saved what we could to afford me this opportunity. My wife and I talked to our children about doing with less and showed them through example the importance of following one’s dream.

Even when chronic illness threatened to derail the plan, we helped them to understand that dreams require sacrifice, a life lesson, we hope, they espouse themselves as adults.

Visit Amazon’s Steven Lee Gilbert Page

Steven Lee Gilbert was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana but considers his childhood home the green, rolling foothills of East Tennessee and the southern Appalachia mountains, settlement to all sorts of interesting people, composites of which can be found throughout his writing. Most of his adulthood he’s spent in the Sandhills and Piedmont of central North Carolina, where he lives now with his wife and family.

Steven received his B.A. in English from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, after which he was commissioned and served four years as an officer and paratrooper in the U.S. Army. While in school he had the pleasure of learning from Wilma Dykeman and in 2007 had the opportunity to work with Barry Hannah, both of whom greatly influenced his writing. The next year, Steven was awarded a Durham Arts Council Emerging Artist Grant for Literature. He has also received recognition for his work as a writer from the Tennessee Writers Alliance.

His work has been published in the Raleigh News & Observer, The Independent Weekly, Diabetes Health, and at Lifescripts.com. He is also the author of the blog, Without Envy.

A Lovely, Indecent Departure is his first novel.
