Here’s the set-up:

BOOK ONE in the NEW AMERICA series.

America is falling, ready to join the Roman Empire as a distant memory in the annals of history. The year is 2027. Tired and desperate, the American people are deep in the middle of The Second Great Depression. The Florida coastline is in ruins from the most powerful hurricane on record; a second just like it is bearing down on the state of Texas. For the first time in history, the Middle East has united as one and amassed the most formidable army the world has seen since the Third Reich. A hidden army of terrorists is on American soil. This is the story of three men: Howard Beck, the world’s richest man, also diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Richard Dupree, ex-Navy SEAL turned escaped convict. Maxwell Harris, a crippled, burned out Chief of Police of a small Texas town. At first they must fight for their own survival against impossible odds. Finally, the three men must band together to save their beloved country from collapse.

BOOK TWO in the New America series, entitled “Resistance” is slated for a summer 2013 release.

One Reviewer Notes

“I’ve read a lot of best sellers in my day and this book is better than most of them! A real page-turner, I couldn’t put it down. Very impressed with how the story flows so seamlessly and the characters are so real to me. Can’t wait for the sequel!” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

About The Author

Richard Stephenson was born in 1975 in Denison, TX and spent his childhood in North Texas. In 1992, he graduated high school after only three years. He then pursued his degree at Oklahoma Christian University, once again accomplishing the task in three years. Richard then married his best friend before going off to basic training to be a military policeman with the US Army. With his new wife joining the adventure, they spent the next four years at Fort Polk, LA and had two children.

Just before his son turned five, Richard and his wife were told that their oldest child had Asperger’s Syndrome. Nine years later, Richard’s son would become the inspiration for the character of Howard Beck.

After leaving the armed forces, Richard continued his law enforcement career in the federal sector and has been with the Department of Justice for eleven years.

Richard enjoys many things. He reads constantly with the thanks of his trusty iPad. When he can find the time, he can be found playing Mass Effect, Fallout: New Vegas, or Modern Warfare 2. When a friend or a friend of friend needs a computer fixed, Richard is on the case.

Richard has always had a passion for writing. His first novel, Collapse, will be released this summer.

On April 27, 2011 sixty two tornadoes touched down in Alabama claiming two hundred and fifty three innocent lives. One of those tornadoes, an EF5 that tracked across Northern Alabama and into Tennessee, killed seventy people over a 132 mile path. Jennifer Pitts Adair, alone in her Capshaw home, huddled under blankets and pillows in her master bathroom closet as the massive tornado ripped her home apart around her.

Here's the set-up:
Brandon Adair, 27, and his wife Jennifer, 30, were married for only 11 months. They had a house they loved, four cats that were like children to them, and dreams of starting a family together.

But in a matter of seconds their dreams were shattered when the walls to their house were literally ripped apart around Jennifer and their pets on April 27, 2011. By the end of the day their home state of Alabama was battered by 62 tornadoes. Brandon and Jennifer's home was obliterated by an EF5. Only their foundation, floors, and a pile of rubble remained.

Then the questions began. Were the neighbors okay? Where were their pets? Where was Jennifer's purse with all of her identification? Where would they live? Would they rebuild or move?

But most importantly, how would they rebuild their lives when everything they knew was gone?

To preserve the darkest moments of her life for her future children, Jennifer kept a journal for a year after the tornado outbreak. In her own words she tells about the emotional and mental impacts of surviving a massive tornado, the nightmares that haunted her, and their day to day life as they struggled through recovery, a second tornado, and a difficult childbirth all within the first year.

In her book Jennifer Adair holds nothing back. She writes about the good and bad equally, revealing a side of survivors that's rarely seen.
One Reviewer Notes:
I live close to where the author does, and on that day the tornado that destroyed her home, passed about a half mile south of my house. A little under a year later on March 6, 2012, another tornado came through the area, and this time hit my house. We did not have a total loss like she did, but I am in awe of everything she has overcame. The book has been a very emotional read for me, and I have cried so many times because I can relate to the feeling she is sharing. I have had to put the book aside for now, and will read it later. I think it is just too soon for me. It is nice to know that the feelings I've had are "normal". I wish you many more blessing to come.

From the Author

I’ve always been fascinated by witchcraft. Even as a kid, I sensed a palpable power running through the natural world. Witches have an ability to interact with that power, which is pretty amazing. Living in Northern California, I’ve been lucky enough to meet people who practice witchcraft, so it isn’t that foreign to me. I decided I’d like to try writing about it. I wanted to explore what I knew about real witches but also create a world where their power could be even more mind-blowing. That’s part of why I set it in my hometown, Healdsburg; I loved the idea of adding paranormal elements to a place I know so well. I hope you enjoy this spooky tale, and that you’ll join Audrey on her future adventures.
–Jody Gehrman

Guy pensiveIt’s Guy Kawasaki Day at Kindle Nation Daily!

Well, not really, but it kind of seems that way. You may recall that a few days ago I gushed about Guy’s latest book as “the book that hits the sweet spot for everyone who has a personal or professional interest in the ebook revolution from the author’s or publisher’s side of the equation.” The book is entitled APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur – How to Publish a Book, and even at its original Kindle price of $9.99 then, a sufficient number of our readers and authors picked it up that it shot up from #1,859 to #743 in the Kindle sales rankings, and rose to the level it deserves in Amazon’s “Authorship” category: #1. We’ve yet to do a sponsored post for the book, so it’s worth saying here that Guy hasn’t paid us a cent to go ape over APE.

Kawasaki and his collaborator Shawn Welch have just completed an update of the book, and if you have already purchased it you can grab the very useful new stuff at no charge by going to Manage Your Kindle. Just find the book in your Kindle Library, click on the “Update Available” link next to the book’s title, and then follow the update prompts. The book was already “great.” Now it’s Tony-the-Tiger Grrreat!

And just for today, if you haven’t bought it yet, there’s even better news. As you already know if you check out our Kindle Daily Deal post when it goes live every day about 7 a.m. EST, APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur – How to Publish a Book is the lead book in today’s Kindle Daily Deal from Amazon at just $1.99! Now that’s a deal! (That bump from #1,859 to #743 after our KND post was nice, but it’s nothing compared to what the authors will see as a result of the Kindle Daily Deal at that sweet $1.99 price. We don’t want to jinx you, Guy, but I see Top 10 in your future!)

Once this book gets to the Top 10, I think it will be pretty slow to drift back toward the mid hundreds, because as much as any book now on the market it is a book that can help millions of people do better at the work they love to do. And we know that every one of those people is a reader. That’s the kind of book that will sell a lot of books in 2013, but with a couple of updates a year it may well sell more in 2015 and even more in 2017.

And oh, by the way, if that’s not enough Guy for you today, you can tune in to him as this week’s guest on NPR’s Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me podcast.

Reviews

A fantasic read…well written and descriptive… Melissa McPhail is an extremely talented writer.   –Reviewed by Charline Ratcliff for RebeccasReads

This is a richly imagined piece of work…the characters are engaging, and McPhail manages to do some very original things, which is often difficult in fantasy, given that so much work in the genre relies on Tolkienian stereotypes….some strong work here.  —Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards
A well thought-out story with many layers…the characters are all interconnected…and the underlying mysteries that tie everything together are well hidden and thoroughly disguised. –Reviewed by Marty Shaw for Reader Views
