Next Summer in Girouette (Adventures in Girouette)
by Michael Welch
Autry and Oxana Quinn return to Girouette, Montana, a near ghost town on the eastern porch of the Rocky Mountains to spend the month of July with their grandfather, a rock-ribbed old Marine known as The Captain. Having spent the month leading up to Christmas the previous year with The Captain and his five old friends (captured in the book Next Christmas in Girouette), the kids are eager to rediscover life as it used to be lived in the wild Old West. They learn to ride and shoot and sleep under the stars, of course, but they also learn to live with the silence surrounding Girouette—without benefit of television, computers, cell phones and so on—and revel in the adventures of the self-styled “diehards” who still inhabit the town.
Oxana, who personifies precociousness, convinces The Captain and his friends there is only one way to keep Girouette from giving up the ghost and enlists their help in her extravagant plan. In addition to The Captain, her sidekicks in this “Tom fool adventure” are: Ron Running Elk, a Blackfeet Indian horse trader who was once the mayor of the town; Joe deSpain, who used to publish the town’s newspaper; Imo Apple, who operates the café that is the town’s only surviving business; and Beau Vadeboncor, a deaf-mute trapper who, though almost 100, lives by himself in a cabin hidden in the mountains.
While Oxana is rescuing the town, Autry is struggling desperately to save himself from an adversary more formidable even than the stark circumstances of northern Montana, including the rough countryside and the rough weather, which have brought Girouette to its knees over the years. Appearing for the first time in this series is Michael Night Heron, a young Blackfeet Indian who hopes to restore the mine that may hold the secret to the town’s rebirth and who has an unsettling effect on Autry and Oxana’s summer in Girouette.
“Michael Welch has created characters that are easy to love. One adventure follows another each bringing the reader to wondering what will happen next. I am looking forward to the sequel” – Neill Brownstei
