For a little while, nothing seems as important as winning Calvin's love. But Calvin is involved with someone else, and when he deploys to Vietnam, it may not be Susanna's love he carries in his heart.

There is so much to like about A Whisper of Smoke. The author does a beautiful job of bringing the reader into the experience of all sorts of things--a girl's first kiss, the first feelings of love as well as the time surrounding the war and all of the unsettling emotions that I suspect went along with the 1960s. This book reminds us of how exciting, beautiful and painful growing up really is.
