Here’s the set-up:

In Tampa, the only thing more crooked than the mob is the police…

Milo Porter leads a happy life in Tampa, Florida. The Iraq war veteran runs routine private investigations by day and coaches powerlifting at night. When Chad Scalzo, the grandson of a rumored mob boss, goes missing, Milo takes the seemingly easy case. After Chad turns up dead, Milo goes from investigator to suspect.

As he seeks to clear his own name, Milo finds himself at the crossroads of two crooked investigations — one by the mob and the other by the police. With the body count climbing, Milo discovers the key to the case in the last known person to see Chad alive.

But can Milo get to her before someone else does?

A Mighty Fortress is the first book in the Milo Porter mystery series, a set of gritty crime thrillers that will remind you of the characters from Robert B. Parker and Robert Crais. If you like gripping suspense, hardboiled crime-solvers, and heart-stopping action, then you’ll love the powerful series starter from S.D. Thames.

Reviews:

S. D. Thames’, “A Mighty Fortress (Milo Porter Mystery Series Book 1),” is one crazy road trip. Having the mob in Tampa, Florida and then the corrupted police force is reminiscent of “The Departed” and the way everyone was intertwined, the corrupted and those that are good. Thames did a good job with the different interactions, especially as more bodies begin dropping because Milo ends up being the one that everyone thinks is the culprit. It gets worse as time starts running down to find the missing link, which is awesome to watch because every time you think you know who is going to help him get out of trouble, the tables turn. This book is heart pounding and it could have been even longer than the four hundred pages and it still would not have been enough. This was a great book that kept me entranced in all of the thrilling action!” – Amazon Verified Purchase

An action-packed example of the hardboiled genre, with lots of plot twists and gritty settings. Partially set at the University of Tampa, it taps into the subgenre of academic noir settings. Recommended for fans of this style, John D. MacDonald fans, etc.” – Five Star Amazon Review
