Here’s the set-up:

When a doomsday cult captures an U.S. Air Force missile base, it’s up to a lowly sergeant and a female psychiatrist to prevent a nuclear holocaust. That’s the setup of “BALLISTIC,” the chilling new thriller from the Edgar-nominated author of the Jake Lassiter series.

What the Reviewers Say

Morale and discipline suffer as missile squadrons are dismantled under a nuclear arms treaty. An Air Force base in Wyoming is ripe for terrorist attack, and it comes from an unexpected source: home-grown religious commandos. Brother David, son of a nuclear physicist, leads a well-armed cult bent on bringing out Armageddon, as prophesied by the Book of Revelations.

Only two people can stop the greatest disaster in the history of mankind: Sergeant Jack Jericho, who is haunted by an act of cowardice in his past, and Dr. Susan Burns, a psychiatrist trapped in the launch control capsule during routine tests of the missile crews. To prevent a nuclear holocaust, these two must work together to defeat the terrorists and to exorcise their own demons.

“This is a very different book from the author of TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD (The Jake Lassiter Series). A tough Air Force sergeant and a female psychiatrist are all that stand between terrorists and the detonation of a nuclear weapon. “MUCH better writing than anything Tom Clancy has done.”
–Shelly Brewster, Lady Trial Lawyer

“I’ve read all of Levine’s legal thrillers and never expected a military action/adventure story from him, but I’m glad I took a shot with this one. Most genre fiction writers stick to familiar ground, but this one is far afield of the Miami courtrooms where Levine’s Jake Lassiter roams. In fact, it’s a nuclear missile silo in Wyoming that’s attacked by terrorists.

Then, I read Levine’s bio and realized he wrote several years for the military TV show “JAG,” which was often set on aircraft carriers, submarines, etc. So, maybe it wasn’t that much of a stretch. Either way, Levine has written a lickety-split, heart-pounding page-turner. A lowly Air Force sergeant has to overcome his own fears and shortcomings to stop a bunch of religious zealots from being able to launch a nuclear missile.

Levine makes it believable, scary, and fun.”

About the Author
PAUL LEVINE worked as a newspaper reporter, a law professor and a trial lawyer before becoming a full-time novelist. Obviously, he cannot hold a job. Paul claims that writing fiction comes naturally: he told whoppers for many years in his legal briefs. His books have been translated into 23 languages, none of which he can read.

He has won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and has been nominated for an Edgar, a Macavity, the International Thriller Writers Award, and the James Thurber Humor Prize.

What’s new? Now on Amazon Kindle: The 20th Anniversary edition of “To Speak for the Dead,” the first of the bestselling Jake Lassiter novels. All author proceeds of “TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD (The Jake Lassiter Series)” are pledged to the Four Diamonds Fund, which supports cancer treatment and research at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.

Writing in USA TODAY, Larry King called the Lassiter series, “Mystery writing at its very, very best.” All the books are now on Kindle:
To Speak for the Dead
Night Vision
False Dawn
Mortal Sin
Riptide
Fool Me Twice
Flesh & Bones

“It’s part psychological thriller, part military action/adventure. The terrorists aren’t Al Qaeda or the Taliban. They’re home-grown religious commandos who believe the Book of Revelations needs a little human push: Armageddon and all that. There are clever revelations about the two sergeant’s and the shrink’s pasts, and the true target of the nuclear weapon is a surprise. No spoilers here.
