“Seventeen-year-old Amber Borden has a lousy sense of direction—so lousy that she takes a wrong turn when returning from her near-death experience. She ends up in the body of the most popular girl in school, who has just tried to commit suicide. Can a girl who can’t even navigate the halls of Halsey High discover the secrets of her new identity and find her way back to her own life?”
That’s the set-up for the American Library Association 2009 Popular Paperback for Young Adults title this morning’s latest additions to our 300+ Kindle Free Book Alert listings, but we think there will be plenty of grown-up citizens of Kindle Nation who will give it a read too….
What could be scarier than retreating to the safest, quietest spot you know, only to be stalked by a crazed killer?
“…Joan Hall Hovey is a female Stephen King… a stunning, multi-layered, modern-day gothic, told with the unforgettable style and grace of a true master of suspense…” –Rendezvous Magazine
No wonder Chill Waters is the winner of Bloody Dagger Award.
Here’s the set-up:
WHAT IF EVIL VISITED THE ONE PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL THE MOST SAFE?
Following the breakup of her marriage, Rachael retreats to the old beachhouse in Jenny’s Cove, where she once lived with her grandmother. It is the one place where she had always felt safe and loved. Devasted and lost, Rachael longs for the simplicity of her childhood.
But Jenny’s Cove has changed. From the moment of Rachael’s arrival, a man watches. He has already killed, and mercilessly will do so again. Soon Rachael becomes a target for a vicious predator whose own dark and twisted past forms a deadly bond between them.
And sets her on a collision course with a crazed killer.
–Cynthia Penn, MIDWEST REVIEW
“Rachael is a magnetically likeable heroine, and Peter Gardner fills his muscular frame well as her sleuthing counterpart concerned about his student. Rachael’s transformation from walking wounded to feisty survivor will leave you cheering.”
–Kristin J. Johnson, author and Vine Voice
“… Joan Hall Hovey has penned as good a thriller as I have ever read…a superb tale of terror and suspense that puts her right up there with the likes of Sandford and Patterson…”
–Ingrid Taylor, Small Press Review

Aggie Villanueva’s Rightfully Mine, a 5-star novel ripped right from the pages of the Old Testament, and just $3.97 on Kindle! Here’s a free sample of our Kindle Nation eBook of the Day!
“Why should the name of my father be wiped from Israel like footprints in a sandstorm because he bore only daughters?”
The Promised Land – God’s precious gift to the Israelites through the conquest of Canaan. But for Rizpah, the promise seemed empty; only a male could inherit land.
She only has one option: to petition Moses on behalf of her self and her sisters.
Despite the odds against her, Rizpah must fight for what is rightfully hers!
From the reviewers:
The era between the Jews’ forty-year wandering and their victory over Canaan is the setting. Rizpah (referred in Numbers 27 as Noah) is the second eldest daughter of Zelophehad. Upon her father’s death due to the plague, Rizpah fears she and her sisters will lose everything because only sons can inherit land, not daughters. Rizpah insists she must fight for what is “rightfully hers”, believing there must be a way to petition Moses to allow them their inheritance.
In this unconventional historical love story, long-time author (and photographer) Aggie Villeneuva takes an thoughtful look at an event in the Bible that is often brushed over. History is changed forever when headstrong second-born daughter Rizpah (Noah in the biblical account) takes matters into her own hands and does the unthinkable by barging into the assembly and demanding an equal share of land with her father’s brothers.
Aggie Villanueva shares with us a compelling story of strong women in a time when women were not allowed to be strong. Her main character and her sisters must fight for what they feel is rightfully theirs without upsetting the male influences of their tribes.
Writing since the late 70s, Aggie Villanueva’s first novel, Chase the Wind, Thomas Nelson 1983, was published before she was 30 and her second,
Rightfully Mine, from Thomas Nelson in 1986.Villanueva freelanced throughout the 80s, also writing three craft columns and three software review columns, both for national magazines. She was featured on the cover of The Christian Writer Magazine October 1983.
For decades peers have described Aggie as a whirlwind that draws others into her vortex. And no wonder. She was a published author at Thomas Nelson before she was 30, and commenced to found local writers’ groups, the Mid-America Fellowship of Christian Writers three -day conference, taught at nationwide writing conferences, and published numerous writing newsletters for various organizations. Over the years she has worked on professional product launches with the likes of Denise Cassino, a foremost Joint Venture Specialist in the area of author product launches.
Aggie founded Visual Arts Junction blog February 2009 and by the end of the same year it was voted #5 at Predators & Editors in the category “Writers’ Resource, Information & News Source” for 2009.

KND Kindle Free Book Alert, Tuesday, May 3: The Brand New Free Listings Keep Coming! plus … David Greene’s dazzling novel Unmentionables (Today’s Sponsor)
Editor’s Note: “I don’t go out on a limb like this for one of our sponsors more than two or three times a year, but I hope you will read David Greene’s novel Unmentionables, because it is a terrific, life-affirming read…. It should have a place in every reader’s library, and the sooner you make time to read it the sooner you will share the great experience I’ve had the past few days. ”
Here’s the set-up:
Field hand Jimmy meets Cato, a house servant from a nearby plantation. Jimmy, who despises whites, mistakes Cato for a white man. But soon he learns that Cato is only half white. Cato is the illegitimate son of plantation owner Augustus Askew. With time, Jimmy’s fascination with Cato grows into romantic love.
Unmentionables is also the story of Dorothy Holland, whose parents own Jimmy. Dorothy does not want any man to control her life. When she falls in love with Cato’s half-brother, William Askew, she must persuade him to agree to her terms, and to betray his role as a Confederate army officer.
This book was fascinating from beginning to end. It is one of those rare books one never wants to end. The story is one never told before, in a situation everyone can learn from. Part of what makes the book so enjoyable is that the style is very reminiscent of 19th century English novels — Trollope, for example. Highly recommended.
Unmentionables by David Greene is set in the American Civil War south and recounts the intertwining stories of two couples, Jimmy and Cato, who are gay, black, and enslaved, and Dorothy and William, who are straight, white, and wealthy. If this time period and subject matter seem a tad too distant to relate to your present 21st century lives, fret not. History in this work is used masterfully to transform the specific into the universal. Unmentionables is about love – romantic and otherwise…
Mr. Greene’s great appreciation of all that is sensual is equaled by his intellectual understanding of relationships that cross established racial, social, sexual, and political boundaries. In a style that is straightforward without being encyclopedic, poetic without being over-embellished, and informative without being didactic, he achieves that balance of form and content required for a successful, and, in this case, beautiful work of art.”

David Greene’s creative life has evolved from film to photography to writing. He wrote and directed the film, Pamela and Ian, in which the characters grapple with the fact that they are shadows of light and that the film must end.

“This book provides an engaging and fun read, while offering sound advice about how thinking differently influences positive eating habits.”
–Gerald P. Koocher, PhD, ABPP
Skinny Thinking grew out of Laura Katleman-Prue’s desire to heal the eating, weight, and body image issues that plagued her for 35 years. She discovered that the root of her problem was the way she thought about food. In fact, changing her diet was irrelevant, if she didn’t change her thinking habits. By teaching herself to go on a “thought diet” and transform her relationship with food, she experienced permanent healing. This healing motivated her to write Skinny Thinking and to lead Skinny Thinking Workshops in order to help others heal their eating issues as well.
Laura attended Pomona College and pursued graduate studies in Marketing at Boston College. In 1980, she founded the Boston Brownie Company Inc. with retail and wholesale distribution in 2,000 stores in 14 states along the eastern seaboard.
In 1992, Laura completed coursework at Lesley University in Counseling Psychology. That same year, she received a Certification in Transpersonal Psychology from the Theravision Institute. A long-time meditator, she has been teaching meditation and self-inquiry for the past four years. She began teaching Skinny Thinking Workshops in 2009.
