By Steve Windwalker

Ever since we first began posting free Kindle book listings — when was that, sometime in the 70s? — our readers have written in from time to time with requests that we make it possible search and sort these lists by category. We’ve tried manual approaches which haven’t really worked, but now we’ve got some great news!

In our ongoing effort to make Kindle Nation the best and most useful site it can possibly be for the greatest readers in the world — yep, I’m talking to you — we invested a while back in bringing on a terrific development team to turn the reader request into a reality. There are other very cool things on the way, believe me, but today I am thrilled to announce the launch of our brand new Free Kindle Book Tool that allows readers unprecedented features for searching and sorting among the Kindle Store’s ever-growing offering of free contemporary titles, including:

Karen Cantwell, this week's Kindle Nation sponsor
  • multiple category search by our most popular categories, with more to come, as well as a complete list that shows all free contemporary titles; and
  • the ability to sort any of these category or complete lists in ascending or descending order by Bestselling, Reader Review Ratings, or Date Added.

And I think this is the right place for me to extend a huge thank you to all the authors and publishers who have sponsored Kindle Nation over the past year. Just in case it is not manifestly clear, it is our sponsors’ past, present and future support that has enabled us to invest in bringing such cool features to Kindle Nation, and I urge and encourage you to give their books a try whenever you are able and interested.

This week’s newsletter, for instance, is sponsored by a terrific novelist named Karen Cantwell, whose novel Take the Monkeys and Run has already proven a favorite with Kindle Nation readers and is guaranteed — at just 99 cents — to deliver one of the best returns on investment you’ll ever find in the Kindle Store when it comes to hitting the sweet spot at the intersection of Humor and Whodunit.

Here’s our current listing of Category choices, and we will be adding additional categories and other brand new features in the future:

KND Kindle Free Book Alert, Friday, June 3: Today We Launch a Brand New Free Book Tool with Category Sorting! plus … Let the barrista bring you a Viennese cinnamon latte as you prepare to curl up with Sandra Balzo’s UNCOMMON GROUNDS (Today’s Sponsor)

We have exciting news this morning from Kindle Nation as we launch a brand new magical and revolutionary Kindle Free Book Alert tool with category search and sorting of over 500 free contemporary titles!

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

“Readers will want to curl up with this winner with a cappuccino or maybe even a Viennese cinnamon latte.”

–Publisher’s Weekly

In her delightful debut, Balzo puts a 21st-century spin on the traditional cozy, replacing tea with coffee as the comfort beverage of choice. Divorced Maggy Thorsen and her friends open a coffee shop in their small Wisconsin town, but a dead body gets in the way…

“…as wonderfully rich and sharply written as anything going. What moves Balzo’s book high above other writers is a sharp and often amusing skill that convinces us that this is real life and that it matters.”
–Chicago Tribune

A Caffeinated Delight”

Here’s the set-up:

A body in a pool of skim milk.

An unsavory discovery at any time, but especially….inconvenient, when the milk puddle is on the floor in front of the espresso machine the very morning you’re scheduled to open your chic suburban coffee house, Uncommon Grounds.

…And the body is one of your partners,

…and you and your other partner—the one who’s still alive—are suspects.

…Which would all be bad enough, even if your husband hadn’t dumped you for his dental assistant, Little Miss Tooth de Lay,

…leading you to jettison your old life and invest what little you have left in Uncommon Grounds,

…which now appears—like your marriage—to be circling the drain.

Here’s how Publishers Weekly describes it:

In her delightful debut, Balzo puts a 21st-century spin on the traditional cozy, replacing tea with coffee as the comfort beverage of choice. Maggy Thorsen, a divorcée whose husband left her for his 24-year-old dental hygienist, and two women friends are eager to open a coffee shop, Uncommon Grounds, in the small Wisconsin town of Brookhills, whose inhabitants include such recognizable types as the local gossip and tennis moms. In a world where Starbuck’s and other chains are ubiquitous, Maggy and her friends have their work cut out for them. The challenge becomes even greater when Maggy discovers the body of one of her partners, Patricia Harper, on the floor of their coffee shop. Determined to find out who killed Patricia and why, Maggy delves into the mystery with a sense of humor that would make Miss Marple smile. In her search for the truth, she works with, and sometimes against, the new and unpredictable county sheriff, Jake Pavlik—and uncovers at considerable personal risk the secrets of some of the town’s most prominent citizens. Readers will want to curl up with this winner with a cappuccino or maybe even a Viennese cinnamon latte.

What the Reviewers Say
UNCOMMON GROUNDS is a fun, addicting read, with Balzo striking a nice balance between the everyday and (occasionally) extraordinary. Her narration and plotting is extremely strong and confident throughout. She is careful not to fall into some of the traps that novels of this genre can create. As a result, Thorsen’s dog is cute, but not too much so; Pavlik is a ready, but imperfect, love interest; and Thorsen’s soon-to-be ex, a despicable cad who has left her for a twentysomething dental hygienist, never even makes an appearance… It is evident from UNCOMMON GROUNDS that Balzo’s talent runs strong and deep. We will see more manifestations of it, and soon.”
–Bookreport.com

“…Sandra Balzo really hits the mark with Uncommon Grounds. Maggy Thorsen, recently divorced public relations expert about to turn entrepreneur, embarks on the chance of a lifetime – opening, along with two friends, her own gourmet coffee shop. Opening day doesn’t go exactly the way the trio has planned; when Maggy arrives at the shop she finds Patricia Harper, one of the three co-owners, lying on the floor in a pool of milk with Caron, Maggy’s long-time friend and other co-owner, standing over her. From this point on, NOTHING is as it seems. I especially like Ms. Balzo’s use of an unconventional murder weapon – an espresso machine! It turns out that Patricia has been electrocuted, and not unintentionally.”
–C. A. Hopkins, Vine Voice

“The story line is an engaging tale that starts off as a wonderful police procedural, but soon adds a solid parallel amateur sleuth subplot. Magnificent Maggie makes the plot percolate as she wonders if she is a suspect, how to avoid pushy reporters and finally how to clear her name. The support cast enhances either the investigation, offers insight into the victim, or a better understanding of Maggie. Though the killer comes out of nowhere and seems stretched, mystery readers will take delight sipping this caffeine cozy caper.”
–Harriet Klausner, Number 1 Reviewer
About the Author

I turned to mystery writing after twenty years in corporate public relations, event management, and publicity in Milwaukee.
My books are set in a gourmet coffee shop and feature Maggy Thorsen, a down-sized PR person. (Go figure.) In the first book, Uncommon Grounds, Maggy arrives at the store the morning of their grand opening only to find one of her partners dead in a pool of skim milk in front of the espresso machine. I’m told the books are funny. There are??five more Maggy Thorsen mysteries out: GROUNDS FOR MURDER; BEAN THERE, DONE THAT; BREWED, CRUDE and TATTOOED: FROM THE GROUNDS UP and A CUP of JO. TRIPLE SHOT is coming later this year.

4.6 stars from 18 reviewers for our Kindle eBook of the Day:  Stephen Parrish’s The Tavernier Stones, just $2.39 on Kindle, and all the laughs that were missing from The Lost Symbol! Here’s a free sample!

2011 Independent Publisher Awards – Gold Medal IPPY Winner for Mystery/Suspense/Thriller!

Scrupulously honest Amish-born cartographer John Graf teams up with outlaw gemologist David Freeman in a fierce 21st-century treasure hunt to break the secret code behind the centuries-old Tavernier Stones mystery. A great read with all the laughs that were missing from The Lost Symbol!

Here’s the set-up for Stephen Parrish’s The Tavernier Stones, just $2.39 on Kindle:

When the body of seventeenth-century mapmaker Johannes Cellarius floats to the surface of a bog in northern Germany with a 57-carat ruby clutched in his fist, the grisly discovery ignites a deadly twenty-first-century international treasure hunt to unearth the fabled Tavernier Stones.  The hoard reputedly contains some of the world’s most notorious missing jewels, including the 280-carat Great Mogul diamond and the 242-carat Great Table diamond.

Scrupulously honest Amish-born cartographer John Graf teams up with outlaw prospector and gemologist David Freeman in a ferocious race to find the treasure and break a secret code that will unravel the centuries-old Tavernier Stones mystery. But other fortune hunters, opportunists and criminals alike, are in hot pursuit of the mismatched partners–and they’ll stop at nothing to possess the legendary jewels.

From the reviewers:

“Relentlessly fascinating, Stephen Parrish’s Tavernier Stones is reminiscent of Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol . . . It’s one hell of a good time.”–Mark Terry, author of The Fallen

“The author certainly knows his subject matter and relates it to historical fact. There should be something to appeal to readers of all persuasions.”–The Mystery Reader

“Parrish keeps the dialogue light, throws in more than a few witty scenes, and ties it all up in a neat and satisfying bundle at the end. What more could you want from a late summer read?”–Bookgasm

“If his subsequent novels are researched to the same degree, he could claim a legitimate position among the notables of this genre.”-Library Journal –April 1, 2010

Stephen Parrish is a cartographer and gemologist. The Tavernier Stones is his first novel. He lives in Germany.

The Author writes:

The character Woody Allen plays in his movie “The Front” is asked how he came to be a writer. He answers that he worked as a sailor, a boxer, and all those other professions a writer must pursue in order to gain the necessary background.

I have a fear of deep water, and I’d just as soon chew rocks as hit someone, but my experiences are no less varied. I’ve been a caddy, a factory worker, a bartender, a chef, a soldier. Most recently I spent twelve years directing university outreach programs in eight European countries.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Louisville and a master’s degree in cartography from the University of Illinois.

While in graduate school I raised money in a trademark variety of ways: as teaching assistant, research assistant, fellowship recipient, and even jewelry salesman. The jewelry experience led to the completion of a gemology diploma from the Gemological Institute of America.

After graduating I accepted an offer from R.R. Donnelley Cartographic Services in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company, at the time the most prestigious custom mapping firm in the country, has since split into several enterprises including MapQuest, the most prolific map source on the web.

THE TAVERNIER STONES draws on much of my education and experience, especially in cartography and gemology. Even my mathematics background finds expression in the code breaking aspect of the novel. As do years of overseas residence, a passion for history, and enthusiasm for wine, magic, and other subjects that enrich the story.

Excellent Civil War Romance”

Here’s the set-up:

“This damn war has cost me everything I love…everything that mattered, and I don’t even know why I’m fighting anymore.”

In 1860, Captain Garrett Fitzwilliam is living in the center of American politics, viewing the divisive issues of the day through his nonpartisan lawyer eyes. His life is defined by love of country and faith in the rule of law…until Rachael Hayes Kendrick enters his world. This sassy young widow captures more than the cocky captain’s imagination. She proves to him that love is indeed an act of faith, and Rachael’s faith in Garrett is indomitable. Her faith will sustain him when war divides the North and the South; his misguided sense of duty may cost him her love. But for what exactly did he pay so high a price?

In the wake of war, everything Garrett believes in, the core of his existence, is collapsing. The Union army suffers repeated defeats not owing entirely to the brilliance of Robert E. Lee’s command of the Confederate army, and in Washington, a very different enemy has emerged. This insidious enemy poses a threat to the United States that Garrett never thought possible. But this enemy no officer may dare to challenge.

So how will Garrett Fitzwilliam defend his country when his country’s survival depends upon an army sabotaged by its own incompetence? Or was his country lost when the man who swore an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution imprisoned his political foes?

Would the answers matter so much to Garrett if Rachael loved him again?

What the Reviewer Says
“I stayed up all night reading this book. I have to be honest, I didn’t expect much because in my experience, Civil War romance novels are usually of the bodice ripper variety and painful to read. This book, however, was NOT.

“I was thoroughly entertained by the exchanges between many of the main characters. The characters were real, sympathetic and fully fleshed out. No one in this book was idealized or too perfect to be a real person, and that’s hugely important. The history was woven through the story masterfully, and was as much part of every scene as the characters were, ad accounts of the battles were gripping and extremely visual.

“All in all, I fell in love with Garrett, wanted to be Rachael, and rooted for them throughout, so this book is definitely on the WIN pile.”

–Meghan Lyons

J.M. Cornwell’s Among Women: Today’s Kindle eBook of the Day is an epic 5-star read, just $2.99 on Kindle, and here’s a free sample!

Here’s the set-up: for J.M. Cornwell’s Among Women, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Trust is always the first thing to go, and the hardest thing to find.

Abandoned in New Orleans and left with $50 and the clothes on her back, after six weeks, Pearl believes she’s found a way to reclaim her life.

She couldn’t have been more wrong.

Arrested and jailed in the Orleans Parish Women’s Correctional Center without any way to reach the outside world, Pearl retreats into her own frantic thoughts.  Slowly, the voices of her fellow prisoners reach past her fear.

No longer alone, Pearl begins to listen to their stories—stories that must be told. Through their tales Pearl finds her own voice, a source of strength and a way out.

From the reviewers:

“Excellent use of language makes this quite vivid and so easy to place oneself in the middle of what’s happening. Poor Pearl being hauled out of the car into that teeming circus of sideshow freaks.” –Zan McD

“The psychic tension you present gives the story both weight and momentum. [T]he characters come off as very believable and haunting.”  –Christian Piatt, Pulling the Goalie

“Bloody hell. It’s off like a rocket! I like the notion of P being dumped with but 50 slaps. I thought of George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and how middle class folk love to read about slumming it.” –~R. J. Askew, Watching Swifts

“This is an epic piece, woven skilfully and laid out on a tapestry where setting and subject have been crafted wonderfully into an addictive read with colloquial and background descriptions. Well done!” –Andrew Williams, Dark Disciple

J. M. Cornwell is a frequent contributor to the Chicken Soup and Cup of Comfort anthologies.  Her novel, Past Imperfect, debuted July 2009. She writes about family foibles, relationships, writing, books and flights of fancy, and may be emailed at fixnwrtr@gmail.com.

What does it take a working mom to finish reading a 212 page book…a vacation! Kudos to Greg for capturing life’s perceptions in a book, and giving me a much needed laughter break.”
–Cathy Beckman
