Today’s Kindle Daily Deal – Friday, Nov. 11 – Save 76% on a terrifying thriller by Rick Acker, plus … David Scott Milton finds beauty in meanness and misery in IRON CITY (Today’s Sponsor, Just $2.99)

But first, a word from today’s sponsor….

“It was my misfortune to have missed ‘The Quarterback,’ and thus be unaware of this fine, unflinching writer. He does not prettify, embroider, ornament of otherwise offend against the utter dignity of his hard, enduring characters; out of their meanness, and misery, he has made a story which I envy, in prose as clean and businesslike as a switchblade. Make sure everybody hears about this book; it’s not about a gambler and a broad and a fighter at all—it’s about the human condition, and it’s beautiful.”

— George V. Higgins, author of The Friends of Eddie Coyle

Here’s the set-up:

Frank Kalinyak, disgraced ex-cop, returns to Pittsburgh, Pa., “Iron City”, his hometown, from Tucson where he has been living a desperate existence since the death of his young daughter. He has been summoned home by Bobby Mack, an Assistant D.A., to find out who murdered an old high school friend. Kalinyak is swept into a whirlpool of bizarre killings, religious fanaticism, church duplicity, hustlers, cops, junkies, old friends gone bad. Amid the fractured landscape of Iron City, rusting mills, rotting industry, he struggles to find sense in his life. Ultimately he must ask: who is he and can he survive?“David Scott Milton can write like an angel… a writer hell bent on fulfilling the legacy of John Steinbeck, carrying on the tradition of James Jones and exploring his own heights.” — Alabama Journal

Heads Up! 3 Days Left! You Have Until Sunday to Enter for Week #5 of Our Brand New KINDLE FIRE Giveaway Sweepstakes, Sponsored by Matthew Frick, author of OPEN SOURCE

We are well into week #5 of our wild and crazy plan to give away a brand new Kindle Fire every week through the rest of this year and well into next, and we are already 70% of the way toward surpassing last week’s record of 2,583 entries.

(Our WEEK #4 GRAND PRIZE winner, Judi Gordey of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, who has been a Kindle Nation citizen since May of this year, was randomly selected from all the entries to win a KINDLE FIRE tablet. The Fire is slated to ship on November 15, and Amazon has confirmed for us that Judi’s will arrive at her home by November 16!)

What about yours?

Maybe yours will be awarded in next Monday, but you know how this works, right? You can’t win it if you don’t enter.  For the Week #5 Sweepstakes, novelist Matthew Frick, author of the bestselling Kindle thriller OPEN SOURCE — think “Everyman meets Jack Bauer,” and it’s just 99 cents! — is helping us all out as our sponsor.

(And just in case you are wondering, Matthew has already paid the full cost of that new Kindle Fire that could very well have your name on it. Every penny. What’s that? If you have a good understanding of how karma works in these matters and you want to make sure you have downloaded a copy of OPEN SOURCE before the Week #5 drawing, thanks, and let’s be clear that while the cosmos works by its own rules, we of course have no way of knowing what you download from the Kindle Store.)

The Week #5 Sweepstakes runs until shortly after noon on Sunday November 13, and entry details can be found at the end of this post.

But first … a word from this week’s sponsor.

Those who have yet to discover Matthew Frick’s tale of international intrigue  Open Source are in for a special treat at the equally terrific price of just 99 cents!

Here’s the set-up:

What if a ship carrying a cargo of stolen Russian missiles bound for Iran was mysteriously hijacked? What if Israel was secretly behind the hijacking? What if the guy who fills the vending machines in the office break room figured the whole thing out?

Based on actual events, OPEN SOURCE is a geopolitical thriller that follows Casey Shenk, a Savannah, Georgia, vending route driver with an insatiable curiosity, as he uncovers a black-market arms deal-gone-bad and the truth behind a high-level plot to shape world politics.

Casey draws his evidence from open sources; by reading beyond the headlines. When his theorizing catches the attention of the wrong people and anonymous threats turn deadly, Casey looks to Susan Williams, an intelligent, but insecure, analyst for the New York-based consulting firm Intelligence Watch Group for help. The two soon find themselves in the crosshairs and fighting to save their own lives, while preventing an even greater injustice that could affect the balance of power in the Middle East and plunge the world headlong into the next Great War.

One Reviewer Notes:

Casey Shenk is an ordinary man, living an ordinary life, with a sub-ordinary job, two ordinary friends and one unusual passion: blogging about world politics. He speaks only English, has a rather pedestrian education and loves spending time in lower class bars: but he is curious about the world he lives in, he doesn’t tire easily, and enjoys solving puzzles. The problem is that he also likes publishing his opinions and findings on the internet.

This is dangerous.

Intrigued by a bizarre news item, he uses his Google-fu to scour the public internet for clues and explanations; based on what he finds in open sources he assembles a plausible hypothesis, and posts it on his blog. The hypothesis is more right than wrong, and powerful people take notice; some see him as a problem to be solved once and for all, while others see him as a potential resource to be used….

Amazon Strongly Supports Enactment of Enzi-Durbin-Alexander Federal Online Sales Tax Bill Called “Marketplace Fairness Bill”

If you’re wondering where Amazon stands on the collection of sales taxes for your online purchases, here’s the scoop. Amazon issued a press release yesterday confirming its support for federal legislation introduced this morning by United States Senators Richard Durbin (D-Illinois), Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., known also as the “Marketplace Fairness Act.”

The bill would close a legal loophole that allows online retailers to avoid paying state sales taxes that brick-and-mortar stores must remit. But the bill exempts online retailers with less than $500,000 in annual sales.

Amazon has opposed legislation in several states to collect online sales taxes because of the complexity created by a state-by-state approach.

“Amazon strongly supports enactment of the Enzi-Durbin-Alexander bill and will work with Congress, retailers and the states to get this bi-partisan legislation passed,” said Paul Misener, Amazon’s vice-president of global public policy, in a statement. “It’s a win-win resolution — and as analysts have noted, Amazon offers customers the best prices with or without sales tax.”

Here’s the guts of Amazon’s press release:

SEATTLE, Nov 09, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today confirmed its strong support for the federal bill introduced this morning by United States Senators Enzi, Durbin, and Alexander, that would create a constitutional framework for collecting sales tax online.

“Amazon strongly supports enactment of the Enzi-Durbin-Alexander bill and will work with Congress, retailers, and the states to get this bi-partisan legislation passed,” said Paul Misener, Amazon vice president, global public policy. “It’s a win-win resolution – and as analysts have noted, Amazon offers customers the best prices with or without sales tax.”

If enacted, the Enzi-Durbin-Alexander bill will allow states to require out of state retailers to collect sales tax at the time of purchase and remit those taxes on behalf of customers, and it will facilitate collection on behalf of third party sellers. Thus, this bill will allow states to obtain additional revenue without new taxes or federal spending and will make it easy for consumers and small retailers to comply with state sales tax laws.

The best thing about this book is the characters -- especially nuanced characters like Camille, who is struggling with balancing her superhero life and her family life, and Seawolf, a (kind of) fish/wolf hybrid who deals with the loneliness that comes with looking non-human.

What could be sweeter than a wife-and-husband fiction-writing team? Kirk and Michelle Johnson-Weider say that 'after 14 years of marriage they have almost fused into one person,' but there's nothing shmookish about the West Coast Supers!
Here's the set-up:
Imagine a world like our own but with superheroes. Would the superheroes change the world or would the world change the superheroes? It's 2013 and West Pacific Supers is the professional superhero team for the city of West Pacific in northern California. It's hard to know what's more dangerous for the members of West Pacific Supers: the supervillains out to destroy the city or the superazzi determined to uncover all of their dirty secrets. If juggling heroics and public relations weren't hard enough, the 2013 Season begins with a shocking death. Now new team members must be recruited to counter two major threats: a scientist with an insane plan that threatens California and an enemy from within West Pacific Supers itself. The team will succeed only after taming their massive egos and getting help from unlikely sources. Unfortunately, just like winning fame and fortune, beating the bad guys always comes at a heavy price.
One Reviewer Notes:
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun and easy book to read. It was X-Men meets baseball in regards to the the super heros. They were like real people with real problems like us everyday folks. The West Pacific Supers (WPS) started with a solid team and then two of their major team members were killed. At least 1/2 of the team were put together from a combination of new members and former members. They did not get much time to get to know each other before they were forced to face a few crisis in a a years time. The WPS had their problems but they were able to work together and get things done. Of course there were casualties, but the characters kept everything light even when things seemed grim.

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Theresa Meyers’ SHADOWLANDER is our eBook of the Day at just 99 Cents with 4.2 Stars, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Theresa Meyers’ Shadowlander, just 99 Cents on Kindle:

Four sisters, three rules to live by, one big problem.

O’Connell Family Rule #1: Don’t let the Fae know you see them.
O’Connell Family Rule #2: Don’t talk to the Fae.
O’Connell Family Rule #3: Never, ever follow them.

Most people only believe what they can see. Gifted with the ability to see the deep, dark fae of Shadowland, Catherine Rowan Mary O’Connell would prefer not to. When the fae abduct her friend Maya, Cate breaks the sacred O’Connell Family Rules and sets a trap for the handsome fae who haunts her every step.

Rook, High Court Advisor to the Shadow King, has been following Cate since she was sixteen. When Cate reveals herself as one of the fabled “Seers”, Rook is stunned—she is one of the few that can permanently open the gates between their worlds. If he turns her over to the Shadow King, his court will rule the human realm.

Cate knows she has precious little time to find Maya. By midnight, the glamour of Mid-Summer’s Eve will fade, leaving her trapped forever in the Shadowland, but Maya’s abductor won’t give up the woman he’s mesmerized easily.

The midnight hour is almost at hand. Cate must choose: her freedom or her destiny.

From the reviewers:

In One Word–  Steamy.  Shadowlander is a delicious little novella packed full of action, intrigue and romance. Author Theresa Meyer wasted no time delving into the heart of the story of Cate and Rook.  The fae world created in Shadowlander is dark, edgy and unique. Meyer managed to make her own mark on a world that is heavily represented in paranormal writing. The setting of this fae world was by turns vibrant and ominous, with it’s own set of rules and danger.  Andrea Thompson

The author goes straight to the point, there’s none stop action and oh my goodness, Rook! She wrote the perfect male character there. The plot goes a little fast at times but Meyers doesn’t miss details. I love all the characters including Kallus. I don’t know why I like him so much but I’m hoping he’ll be in the next books. The only thing is that I wish I had the next book in my hands now because I can’t wait to read more about the O’Connell sisters.  –  bookittyblog

With its mystical world and sexy characters, Shadowlander is a quick-paced novella that will entrap you on every page.  –  Jenababy13

The progeny of a slightly mad (NASA) scientist and a tea-drinking bibliophile who turned the family dining room into a library, Theresa Meyers learned early the value of a questioning mind, books and a good china teapot. She started her first novel in high school, eventually enrolling in a Writer’s Digest course and putting the book under the bed, writing as a freelancer for newspapers and national magazines.

It wasn’t until she joined Romance Writers of America in 1993, that she seriously began to pursue a career in fiction. In 2005 she was selected as one of eleven finalists for the American Title II contest, the American Idol of books. She has since sold several novels and novellas. She writes paranormal and historical romance, Steampunk, Young Adult books and some Middle Grade fiction.

Theresa firmly believes in love and first sight. Afterall, she’s married to the first man she ever went on a real date with (to their high school prom), who she knew was hero material when he suffered through having to let her parents drive, and her little brother sit between them in the backseat of the car (which is a whole other story. They’ve been married over 20 years.

They currently live in a Victorian house on a mini farm in the Pacific Northwest with their children, four cats, an old chestnut Arabian gelding, an energetic mini-Aussie shepherd, several rabbits, a dozen chickens and an out-of-control herb garden. When she isn’t writing, reading, watching movies (her favories include Stardust, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Lost Boys and too many others and the television series Supernatural) she’s usually having tea with her friends, volunteering at the school or outside enjoying the flowers. If you’re curious to know more, you can always find her website online, or visit with her on Twitter and FaceBook.
