In 1850s South Carolina, ladies with ambition and a penchant for wearing trousers are rare indeed. But that’s Charlotte Whitney all over. Not only does Charlie yearn to resurrect her late father’s newspaper, she wants to be its editor. That position, however, has been handed to Richmond newspaperman Adam Chase. Undeterred, Charlie convinces Adam to teach her the journalism trade. In doing so, she teaches him how to open his heart.

Adam Chase had one goal in mind: to return Edgemont’s newspaper to its former glory and then make tracks back to the big city. But he faces one very tempting obstacle in outspoken Charlie Whitney. Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: Barbara Taylor Sissel’s Thriller THE NINTH STEP – Just $2.99 and Currently Free for Amazon Prime Members Via Kindle Lending Library!

The Ninth Step

by Barbara Taylor Sissel

4.8 stars – 13 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled

Here’s the set-up:

“Barbara Taylor Sissel crafts a sure-handed, beautiful garden of a novel on ground tilled by Jodi Picoult and Anita Shreve. Firmly confronting issues of human frailty, redemption, and letting go, The Ninth Step is a story about what is, but it aches with the stories of what might have been as one man’s quest for forgiveness leads him to the impossible task of forgiving himself, and the lives of the people he’s wronged are drawn into a shattering spiral of events. Sissel’s vibrant voice, rich characters, and deft plotting draw the reader in and keep pages turning to the gripping, unexpected end.” – Joni Rodgers, NYT bestselling author of Crazy for Trying and Sugarland

“An unforgettable story of loss, forgiveness, and the true cost of redemption, as beautifully-written as it is compelling.” – Bestselling author Colleen Thompson

Livie Saunders is fluent in the language of flowers; she taught the meanings to her fiancé, Cotton O’Dell, but then Cotton vanishes without explanation on their wedding day forcing Livie to learn the language of desolation. Heartbroken, she buries her wedding gown beneath a garden pond and resolves to move on, but there are nights when she slips . . . into a sequined red dress and a pair of stiletto heels, a stranger’s bed, a little anonymous oblivion that is not without consequence. Still, she recovers a semblance of ordinary life and imagines she is content. But then, six years later, Cotton returns and her carefully constructed world shatters. The old questions bite like flies. Questions that Cotton O’Dell prays he can answer. He prays that Livie, whom he has never stopped loving, will be moved to forgive him. But there is more than Livie to be concerned about. There is Cotton’s act of cowardice that caused him to become a fugitive in the first place . . . that crime he committed for which the legal clock is still ticking. That thing he did that will shock Livie to her core once she learns of it. Livie is desperate to trust Cotton, but then he goes missing again. Time telescopes, avenues of escape close, and as lives hang in the balance, choice dithers between mercy and revenge. And a decision that will take only a moment will carry the consequences of a lifetime.

THE NINTH STEP is a story of redemption, of being brought to your knees in the sober light of day to face a monstrous error and yet somehow finding the strength to stand up, to try and make it right. Even if that decision breaks your heart, endangers your freedom and ultimately threatens your life.

Are you mad as hell?

At last, Stephen Windwalker provides the concise tell-it-like-it-is narrative for which we have all been waiting: How did we get here, how much worse is it going to get, and what can we do to protect ourselves, our families, and our future?

The time for seeing the world through a rose-colored lens is long over. Simple truths that run deep through Windwalker’s writing come directly from years of helping working and retired people stand up for economic justice as one of the country’s top community organizers.

Readers of Windwalker’s books on technology and commerce have come to appreciate the thoughtfulness and intellectual depth with which he has illuminated those subjects. Now he applies the same intelligent focus to a far more daunting task: helping us all to see how, together, we can climb out of the deep hole that we have dug together for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.

With a succinct explanation of the relentless waves that continue to drown national economies around the world, he clears the fog of denial to reveal a rolling global depression that could last through much of the coming decade.

From the reviewers:

Before reading The Worried Citizen’s Little Survival Guide To The Greatest Financial Crisis Of The Century, I expected the book to be a re-hash of all the cable network shows that have begun to bore even the most avid worrier of our economic downturn. I was so wrong.  Windwalker’s original, concise and powerful analysis of today’s most troublesome state of affairs shows us all how we, as individuals, are effected and will be far into the future.  –  Donna Rose

Elegantly written, direct, no punches pulled.  Every time I see those CNBC guys pontificating about when the recovery is going to begin I want to scream. In Windwalker, though, I have a kindred spirit who knows what is really at stake for families and individual working people and retired people these days. He tells it like it is, but the direct approach does not keep him from being able to break down the most complicated economic events in elegant, easy-to-understand language. I read this as a Kindle exclusive and my only regret is that I have to wait weeks for the paperback to share it with most of my friends.  –  Rena D

I cut my teeth as a writer covering the Cape Cod Baseball League and other sports for what was then called the Cape Cod Standard-Times and later the Boston Globe, studied the craft of writing with Robert Lowell, Kurt Vonnegut, Monroe Engel and Carter Wilson, and served as Fiction Editor of the Harvard Advocate.

In 1999 I founded a small independent publishing company called Harvard Perspectives Press (named after two of my favorite institutions from my undergraduate years, the Harvard House of Pizza and the Harvard Wine Company), and it has done astonishingly well, with a couple of niche bestsellers, other work that we have been proud to publish, and now some stunning successes with the Kindle publishing platform.

I have three wonderful children, and along the way I’ve been an author, a community organizer, a bookseller, a publishing executive, a marathoner, an elected official, and some other things unsuitable for mention here.

And here, in the comfort of your own browser, is your free sample of The Worried Citizen’s Little Survival Guide to the Greatest Financial Crisis of the Century (Understanding and Surviving the Domino Depression) by Stephen Windwalker:

Briony had to move to Wicked, Massachusetts to live with her Great Aunt Sophie after her family disappears on vacation. The woods at the edge of Aunt Sophie's inn are filled with secrets and inhabitants both seductive and deadly. Among them is a beautiful boy name Fallon who saves her one night in the woods. As Briony gets closer to Fallon, she learns he has a secret, as do most of the residents of Wicked ...
One Reviewer Notes:
No wonder why this book won Best Horror in Fiction. It was intriguing from the beginning and learning about an entire town where going into the woods can mean life and death. Briony's parents and little brother disappeared in Wicked Woods on a family trip she missed out on, and now she's brought to the very woods to live with her great aunt. Wicked Woods is an exciting read, and I find myself sympathizing and relating to Briony. She has teen issues on top of dealing with the loss of her family and settling into a new school and life with a relative she barely knows. Then meeting the beautiful blonde boy in the woods that night she was stranded just makes this a fantastic read. It's fantasy and it's meant to be fun. I find myself thoroughly immersed in Briony's life.

Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.

Here’s the set-up:

There comes a time in every man’s life when he says to himself, “Holy Sh*t! I’m about to be eaten by a bear!”

Tony James Slater went to Ecuador, determined to become a man.
It never occurred to him that ‘or die trying’ might be an option…

The trouble with volunteering in a South American animal refuge is that everything wants a piece of you. And the trouble with being Tony, is that most of them got one.

Just how do you ‘look after’ something that’s trying it’s damnedest to kill you and eat you?
And how do you find love when you a) don’t speak the language, and b) are constantly covered in excrement and entrails?
