Joseph Love (b. 1985) was born and grew up in Murfreesboro, TN. He moved around between Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina while beginning his writing career. Slowly, he gained recognition by respected journals such as West Branch, Greatest Uncommon Denominator, and Raritan. Desperate for a job at the time of his daughter's birth, he began working for a funeral home, where he decided to rework a zombie novel he'd written years before. The new book was shorter, a novella, and it fit with his short story style. Kill Town, USA is his powerful, bloody, zombie-filled mass-market debut.

Here's the set-up:
When life hands Jack Heart lemons, he uses them for target practice. Recently laid off, Jack uses his free time to pursue a lifelong dream, hiking the Appalachian Trail. In winter. After fighting off a sickly, vicious black bear in the middle of the night, Jack decides to take time off the trail. However, he finds his problems are much larger than a rogue bear. Stuck in quarantined Marshall, North Carolina, Jack Heart takes on the zombie apocalypse, evades renegade locals, and manages to drum up a love interest in the meantime. The daughter of an infected mountain man, Audrey is Jack's ideal compatriot in the war against the undead.

I found myself on the edge of my seat while reading Kill Town, USA. The action was straightforward and the characters were well developed and likable. I do not typically read speculative fiction or books out of the horror genre, but I am impressed. Can't wait to see what this guy does next...
