What really set this story apart for me–and what I think some of the other reviewers didn’t get was the author’s set up. I thought I knew where it was going, but the ending really caught me off guard and surprised me in a way that I wasn’t expecting. Plus, Wren wasn’t an idiot, and Ever wasn’t what I was expecting from the “hero” character. The originality lies in the author’s voice, the way they make us look at their world and see its’s realities, and the feelings they evoke in us. The most striking thing about this book is how good the writing is.  I suspect that C.J. Valles is a Middle School or High School English teacher.
