The Folks at Fifty-Eight

by Michael Patrick Clark
4.2 stars – 25 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled

Here’s the set-up:
Gerald Hammond is the exception to the rule; an honourable spy, whose lofty principles have brought him nothing but loneliness and isolation. Catherine Schmidt is the stunning young daughter of an assassinated spymaster, whose murderous quest for vengeance has left her at the mercy of the infamous Head of Soviet State Security.
On a covert operation, in Soviet-occupied Germany, Hammond has no knowledge of the unseen forces that sponsor and oppose his mission. He only knows that he must somehow save her to save himself, but, as ever-more disturbing revelations come to light, begins to wonder which poses the greater threat; the enemy he runs from, or the friend he runs to?

Set against a factual background of government conspiracy, and one of the most audacious espionage coups in history, the Folks at Fifty-Eight is a beautifully-paced tale of seduction, betrayal, blackmail, and murder that blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction.“This is the best spy novel I have read in quite some time” – Amazon Reviewer

“A subtle homage to the detective and spy novels of the 50’s and 60’s” – Amazon Reviewer

“Delicious spy novel, bold and graphic.” – Amazon Reviewer

“How could it get any better?” – Amazon Reviewer

“I purchased this based on the reviews, and it exceeded expectations” – Amazon Reviewer

Contains adult subject and strong language

Will Mary’s hope for a life free from abuse finally be realized? Can Warren move beyond his past to embrace a new hope?

One Reviewer Notes

“The end of the saga, oh how I loved the journey. What great characters, each unique and very real. The author was amazing how she told the story with the list of characters ever growing, as families do and yet I as the reader was not lost. I cared about each one of them. I would highly recommend the entire series for anyone who likes books with a lot of character development. Thank you, Karen Baney, for writing a wonderful series.” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

Here’s the set-up:

Welcome to the world of collapsing Communism. It is the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall when people are still willing to risk all to cross the Iron Curtain to the West. In this adventure-packed memoir Susan Viets, a student turned journalist, arrives in Communist Hungary in 1988 and begins reporting for the Guardian, not at all prepared for what lies ahead. She helps East Germans escape to the West at a picnic, moves to the Soviet Union where she battles authorities for accreditation as the first foreign journalist in Ukraine and then watches, amazed, as the entire political system collapses. Lured by new travel opportunities, Viets shops her way across Central Asia, stumbling into a tank attack in Tajikistan and the start of the Tajik civil war.

“Picnic at the Iron Curtain” shows every day people at the centre of dramatic events from Budapest to Bishkek and Chernobyl to Chechnya. It is a memoir that spans a period of momentous historical change from 1988-1998, following through with an eyewitness account of Ukraine’s Orange Revolution in 2004.

PORTAL is the first book of the Portal Chronicles.
One Reviewer Notes:
I think it has a very clever hook and plays so well against a variety of genres -YA, fantasy, romance, sci-fi. It's a very tough balancing act to walk the tightrope of so many genres without slipping up on one of them, but I'll be damned if you didn't pull it off with aplomb.

Here’s the set-up for Giacomo Giammatteo’s Murder Takes Time, just $2.99 on Kindle:

This novel is not just a murder mystery.

This novel is not just a thriller.

This novel is not just a love story.

This novel is not just a life story.

This novel is all in one. -OBI Amazon reviewer

From the book:

There was only one rule in our neighborhood–never break an oath. But oaths are easy to take and damn hard to keep.

Now I’m staring at my best friend, lying on the floor in a pool of blood, my bullet in his gut. Where the hell did it go wrong?

To understand that you’d have to go back to the beginning, back to when the three of us ruled the neighborhood.

From the reviewers:

Giammatteo turns a genre stereotype on its head with a smart balance of conflicting perspectives that emotionally involve the reader in the New York underworld… The narrative heat and layered characterization rarely drag, making for an engaging read. A nuanced debut that upends genre stereotypes and readers’ expectations. – Kirkus Reviews

Giammatteo’s debut novel is breathtaking and groundbreaking. He creates a story that involves the conflicts of reality that pull at us from both sides of the tracks. This isn’t your typical mob story. The author of Murder Takes Time, Giacomo Giammatteo, may be the Mario Puzo of our time. –eNovel Review

“Murder Takes Time” by Giacomo Giammatteo, is one of the best murder mysteries I have ever read. The goose bumps on my arms will attest to that! -Reader Views.

Giammatteo wastes no time with long drawn out paragraphs. He gets right into the thick of it immediately, with the first murder taking place on page three. It is not your ordinary run of the mill murder either, as it involves a baseball bat, a shot glass, and a pair of tongs. What follows is an action-packed book that never slows down. The writing is gripping and fast moving. The reader is reeled in immediately and the non-stop action doesn’t stop delivering until the last page is turned. If you are looking for a unique thriller, then definitely give “Murder Takes Time” a try! – Kam Aures for Rebecca’s Reads.

Giammatteo takes his crime novel to a new level and… puts the characters through the wringer, so the reader knows each one intimately. – SPReview

Giammatteo grips you by the throat in the first two chapters…OnFictionWrit

I live in Texas now, but I grew up in Cleland Heights, a mixed ethnic neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware that sat on the fringes of the Italian, Irish and Polish neighborhoods. The main characters of Murder Takes Time grew up in Cleland Heights and many of the scenes in the book were taken from real-life experiences.

Somehow I survived the transition to adulthood, but when my kids were young I left the Northeast and settled in Texas, where my wife suggested we get a few animals. I should have known better; we now have a full-blown animal sanctuary with rescues from all over. At last count we had 41 animals–12 dogs, a horse, a three-legged cat and 26 pigs.

Oh, and one crazy–and very large–wild boar, who takes walks with me every day and happens to also be my best buddy.

Since this is a bio some of you might wonder what I do. By day I am a headhunter, scouring the country for top talent to fill jobs in the biotech and medical device industry. In the evening I help my wife tend the animals, and at night–late at night–I turn into a writer.
