Love and Other Subjects by Kathleen Shoop – A Snappy, Quirky Look at Post-College Life – 14 Straight Rave Reviews & Just $2.99

Love and Other Subjects

by Kathleen Shoop

5.0 stars – 14 Reviews

Here’s the set-up:

Love and Other Subjects is a snappy, quirky look at post-college life. I adore digging into the deep past, writing historical fiction like, The Last Letter and After the Fog, but writing women’s fiction is just plain fun. I’m sure you recall your own personal phase of life after college or high school and all of the fun, worry, and excitement that went with it. Those experiences are reflected in Carolyn as she overcomes insecurity and finds her path in the world. To weave a more serious thread into the novel, I pulled from two decades of work with students and their teachers and I set Love and Other Subjects in a struggling school. This novel is a terrific blend of all that is wonderful about being young, independent, in love, and idealistic. There’s simply no other time in life like it no matter what you chose for your career.

Here is what readers on Amazon are saying about Love and Other Subjects:

“If you are a reader who enjoys love stories, who likes tales where courage and spirit might just conquer all, then Love and Other Subjects is the book for you. Here, you just might find a reflection of yourself, either present or past…” —Regis Schilken

“Sharp, witty writing and relatable characters make Love and Other Subjects a great read!” —Allyson

“The book is well-written, with good dramatic tension. I was pulled along into the story; it’s compelling… The sexual tension in the story is hot (and funny!); the coming of age theme is universal, and the classroom and student-related scenes very moving and realistic.” —Lynne Spreen

As a former accountant who still counts ceiling tiles while sitting in the dentist chair, I found Lucy a very lovable character. Her sometimes frenetic search for the happy ending had me sharing her emotional ups and downs and laughing out loud while trying to give her advice.

Here's the set-up:
Lucy Tuttle is a workaholic financial planner whose biggest worry is how to line up the sticky notes on her desk just so, until her only relative dies a car accident halfway across the world. Suddenly Lucy (apartment-dwelling, doesn't-own-a-hammer Lucy) inherits a handyman's delight on the other side of town. Her boyfriend, a laid back environmentalist with an affinity for organic lentils and sock thievery, convinces Lucy to move into her aunt's brokendown house. The two of them embark on a quest to settle down, renovate her aunt's home, and start a family, but as it turns out, living happily ever after in a house that's about to be condemned isn't so easy after all.

"The Sock Wars" is a novel of love, loss, and what gets left behind.
One Reviewer Notes:
It's a witty, observant and poignant story of how financial consultant Lucy Tuttle, about to hit the big 3 0, comes to terms with the loss of her only relative, a much-loved, unconventional aunt. The late Aunt Maren is a little like the aunt in Graham Greene's wonderful "Travels with my Aunt" but in New York in the 21st century. In doing so, she discovers much about herself that she never realised or dared to recognise, having for so long sought comfort and distraction in financial-led safety mechanisms, such as counting to her favourite high number to calm her nerves. The characters and settings are well drawn. Indeed, the whole book is well written, with realistic conversation, atmospheric description and scene-setting and a plausible, likeable narrator.

Michael Scott Miller weaves a compelling tale of saints and sinners in THE BOOK OF SYLVIA – It’s Kindle Nation’s eBook of the Day, and just for today you can grab it for just 99 cents!

Here’s the set-up for Michael Scott Miller’s The Book of Sylvia, just 99 cents on Kindle:

Under suspicion of abetting a robbery, London streetwalker Sylvia Smith doesn’t know where to turn. Frightened and alone, she arrives on the steps of St. Alban’s church, where she meets Father Christopher Fosberry, a priest consumed with self-doubt as he struggles to resurrect his dying church.

Together they set out to recover the stolen money, following a cryptic clue whispered to Sylvia by her client as he was taken into custody. They quickly find themselves drawn toward one another by a mutual sense of despair and a desire to help the other. But Sylvia soon discovers that the more she guides the priest, the deeper she drives a wedge between the man and the church.

From the reviewer:

Sylvia the prostitute and Father Christopher the priest take us on a mysterious journey through England. In the process, they learn things about each other and themselves. This is a fun mystery, as well as a beautiful story of self-discovery and friendship. The characters are rich in development, easy to love and empathize with. The plot moves at a good pace, and the mystery kept me guessing all the way through to the end. There is no strong language or graphic scenes of any sort, which makes this perfect entertainment for all readers. – “BookAddict”

Finalist of the 2012 International Book Awards

Talcon Star City

by Gary Caplan

by Gary Caplan
2 Rave Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Talcon Star City has been honored as a “Finalist” of the 2012 International Book Awards in the “Fiction: Science Fiction” category.

Somewhere in the future, the universe is filled with hundreds of wild, weird and completely diverse civilizations existing on a myriad of strange and wonderful planets. But amidst all these brave new worlds, are otherworldly enemies intent on control, no matter what it costs them or the universe, and all courageous people must step forward and band together to stop them. That’s the premise of Gary Caplan’s brilliantly realized Talcon Star City, a story of bravery, revenge, aliens, and interstellar swashbuckling.

Caplan first burst onto the literary scene when he became a finalist in the highly prestigious 2010 Indie Excellence Award for his novel Phoenix Rising, which is also the prequel to Talcon Star City. Honing his craft, Caplan continued to write and went on to win the 2011 Indie Excellence Award in fantasy for his novel Return of the Ancient Ones. With Talcon Star City, he’s become even more exhilarating a writer, fashioning a science fiction epic that’s also thoughtful and realistic.

Talcon Star City centers on the character of Commodore Robert Sheppard, who, as acting admiral, commands the flagship Phoenix and the 6th fleet. As an esteemed member of the Order of Star Knights, Sheppard is gifted with unusually powerful metaphysical abilities, which he uses to help preserve the hundreds of civilizations in the universe. But there is now unrest in the universe and Sheppard and his other military officials must band together to fight a desperate alien challenge to the peaceful Alliance of Worlds. Lucky for Sheppard, he has his old mentor Garfield, and other allied Star Knights and admirals to help back him up in his fight. But as the plot thickens, the battle escalates. Now Sheppard is facing his old nemesis, the Varlon, who are sworn enemies of the Alliance of Worlds and are intent on expanding their power. But as Sheppard grapples with the evil he already knows, he must also face a group of aliens who are new to him, the fearsome Accads, who have joined with the Varlon and who pose challenging new threats he may be ill-equipped to vanquish. The best hope for the universe is to find the Talcon Star City and gain even more allies against these forces of evil. But time is running out. Can the stalwart heroes win the battle and stop this alien onslaught or is it already too late?

Caplan’s sparkling prose and larger-than-life characters make Talcon Star City an incomparable reading experience. “Sometimes unusual alliances are needed to combat deadly enemies,” says Caplan, an idea he boldly and entertainingly illustrates. His vision of the future is filled with startling new powers and technologies, all rendered with dazzling skill and humor, from comet-like projective weapons to particle cannonballs and invisible cloaks. Drawing from his own experiences in the military, Caplan gives his futuristic tale a stunning feeling of authenticity, making the interactions between military forces and aliens as plausible and true-to-life as they are exciting and original. Meant to appeal to fans of both Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek, Talcon Star City seems destined for classic status.
