Laken discovers her long dead boyfriend, Wesley, has been thrown into this alternate world as well. He is quick to inform her she suffered a horrible fall and that her memory hasn’t fully returned. According to Wesley the other life she had—her name, her family, they were simply a side effect of her brain trauma.

In her quest for answers she meets Cooper Flanders, the son of her psychiatrist who readily believes every word she says.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best YA Paranormal Books I’ve Read – A Definite Must Read!,October 7, 2012
By
Stephanie Ward (Cochranton, PA United States)
This review is from: Ephemeral (The Countenance) (Kindle Edition)

Oh, how I loved this book. I apologize now for any gushing and rambling that will occur in this review. ‘Ephemeral’ is a completely enchanting novel that mixes the best aspects of genres together and produces something entirely new and unlike anything else out there. There’s so much going on throughout the story – zombies, creepy supernatural creatures, angels, and alternate realities. There’s a superb mix of mystery, romance, thrilling action and a fast-paced plot that compels you to keep reading until you’ve devoured the last word, only to leave you wanting more.

I loved the complex and intriguing world that the author creates in the novel. Like I mentioned, there are so many different paranormal aspects converging in the storyline that it is completely enthralling. The overlying mystery of what really happened to Laken and what is going on in this new place she’s found herself is very detailed and engrossing. There always seemed to be new twists and underlying secrets to keep the reader guessing. The romance in the book is deliciously steamy, but not overdone in the least. I found it to be the perfect level of toe-curling intimacy without diverting attention away from the rest of the story. The characters are all unique and have well rounded personalities that make them really believable and easy to identify with. I felt like I was right there beside Laken, rooting for her and wanting to help her figure out what was going on. The setting of the novel – everything from the town of Ephemeral to the school and beyond – was the perfect mix of creepy and otherwordly. The history and the backstory that the author creates in the book are very detailed and make the story that much deeper and more interesting. There honestly isn’t enough praise I can give this book – it’s definitely one of the best I’ve read this year and a new favorite of mine. READ THIS BOOK if you haven’t already – you will not regret it!!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Amazon’s #3 British Detective Mystery

4.5 stars – 81 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:
In Victorian London’s cesspool of crime and disease, a series of murders remains undiscovered until a cholera victim is found floating in the city’s drinking water supply. Dr Anton Kronberg, England’s best bacteriologist, is called upon to investigate and finds evidence of abduction and medical maltreatment. While Scotland Yard has little interest in pursuing the case, Kronberg pushes on and crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes. The detective immediately discovers Kronberg’s secret – a woman masquerading as a man in order to practice medicine – a criminal deed that could land her in prison for years to come. But both must join forces to stop a crime so monstrous, it outshines Jack the Ripper’s deeds in brutality and cold-bloodedness.

Reviews

“The Canon has always needed some sorting when it comes to Holmes and Women. Wendeberg is setting the cat among the pigeons with this provocative and original new take on the Holmesian universe.” Peter Kavanagh, CBC Radio Producer (The Sunday Edition)

“Laurie King’s Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes series was one of my favorites, especially the early books but I have to say this interpretation is smashing. Anna Kronberg is a kick-butt heroine… Suspenseful, authentic yet innovative and faithful to the original Sherlock Holmes character–can’t wish for a better combination. This is a skillful writer and a thinking one, no easy outs and no lazy solutions.” Marik Berghs Book Reviews

“The story is fast-paced, engaging, enjoyably atmospheric, dark, and I’m really fascinated with Anna’s character.” The Stormy Petrels

“Beyond being a fine CSI/Sherlock Holmes style mystery, this is a poignant novel at times almost poetic” … “An unforgettable hero(ine)” Dan Andriacco, best-selling author of Baker Street Beat

“You’ve created a truly fascinating character in Dr Kronberg and set her against one of the finest  characters in English mystery fiction. Dr. Kronberg is intelligent, passionate about what she does, assertive in a positive way, and compassionate and empathetic to modern readers. That she must masquerade as a man in order to do what she does best and achieve the success she so richly deserves speaks volumes about the history of women in Western society.” Paul Negri, former editor-in-chief and president of Dover Publications

“A terrific read!” Richard “RB” Botto, CEO of Stage32

“Such an engaging voice” Cathy Jones, author

Here’s the set-up:
“Amidst Traffic” is a collection of high-caliber short fiction, compiled from Michel’s best work over the years. Some of these stories have appeared in literary journals and publications internationally. Every piece is crafted with a sense of compassion for the human spirit, while seeking answers about the conflicts we experience in everyday life. The characters inside will make you care about their struggles and hope for their redemption. But the most compelling aspect of this collection is how the ink from one story bleeds into another, creating a world of interconnected storylines. The lives of these characters don’t exist inside a fictional vacuum. Amidst the traffic of their chaotic lives, a larger picture will take shape around them. These stories will leave you in awe, move you emotionally and make you reflect on the impact your own life has on others.

Here’s the set-up:

Even in late November the Rio Grande Valley was baking hot. It was one a.m. and the temperature was still 85 gringo degrees.
Ornela was only a hundred yards from the river when the coyote she had hired to take her across turned around and said, ” There’s going to be an additional charge…” And he had a gun in his hand.
Eric was about to make his first trip across the same river, with a team of cocaine smugglers. He wished like hell that he could just go back to his old job in Alaska, but if he tried to run a dozen of his relatives would die.
When he had gotten caught in bed with the drug lord’s woman he had expected a slow painful death. Now he was finding out that they weren’t going to let him off that easy.

One Reviewer Notes

“Once I met the characters I was drawn into the story, and couldn’t cut the tension! I just had to see if Eric survived and how he made it! I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fast pace and action!” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

About The Author

I was born and raised in the Rocky Mountain region of the western United States, in a town of 12,000 people. I’ve tried living in more crowded places, such as Denver, or Atlanta, but after a year or two I always end up back in the high plains, where the antelope greatly outnumber the people. I’ve worked the usual assortment of jobs–cook, cowboy, roughneck, ambulance driver, but mainly I’ve been a land surveyor, specializing in remote areas of the west and also Alaska, where I’ve helped to build airstrips, pipelines, gold mines and power plants. I like land surveying in the bush  because it’s outdoor work and there are few people and less noise.
For the last decade I’ve spent half of every year in Latin America. I was in Mexico when I decided to write a novel about drug smugglers on the Texas border and I knew I would also have to deal with the subject of illegal immigration. Everyone in Mexico knows someone who’s working without papers in the US. I was married to a Mexicana at the time and I talked to some of her cousins who’ve crossed the border wet-style more than once. I did a lot of research in books and online, I even rode with the Border Patrol, but in the end I knew I couldn’t write about it if I hadn’t done it so I crossed the river myself, alone. I survived and evaded the Patrullas Fronterizas. You can read an account of that trip on my blog, at edmundpickett.com/blog (Swimming the Rio Grande)
My second novel, about Islamic terrorists and the FBI agents who are chasing them, will be published in November 2012. After that I’ll return to the Rio Grande for Borderline Case #2, in which the cartels strike back.

Fans of Hannah Howell’s historical paranormal series and George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones need look no further than Coreene Callahan’s dramatic new novel, KNIGHT AWAKENED for their next paranormal literary obsession.

In AD 1331, warlord Vladimir Barbu seizes control of Transylvania. But in spite of his bloody triumph, his claim to the throne remains out of reach. The king of Hungary opposes his rule, the Transylvanian people despise his brutal ways, and the high priestess needed to crown him has vanished without a trace. But Barbu hasn’t come this far only to be thwarted by a woman. He unleashes his best hunters to track her down and bring her to him—dead or alive.

For Xavian Ramir, killing is the only life he has ever known. Torn from his family when he was a child, he was trained from an early age to be an elite assassin. But now he longs for something more, vowing to start anew after one last job. The bounty on his target’s head is enough to set him up for good—if he can resist the long-dead conscience that stirs to life when he meets his beautiful mark.

Afina Lazar never wanted to become high priestess, but the brutal murders of her beloved mother and sister leave her no choice. Now she is running for her life, desperate to protect the magical amulet entrusted to her care. But when Barbu’s assassin comes for her, she realizes her only chance of stopping the warlord’s rise to power is to convince this enigmatic—and handsome—hunter that she is more valuable alive than dead.

Dramatic and fast-paced, Knight Awakened is a stirring love story between two people searching for a second chance in a magical world of assassins, warlords, unearthly beasts, and nonstop adventure.

About The Author

As the only girl on all guys hockey teams from age six through her college years, Coreene Callahan knows a thing or two about tough guys and loves to write about them. Call it kismet. Call it payback after years of locker room talk and ice rink antics, but whatever you call it, the action better be heart stopping, the magic electric, and the story wicked, good fun.

After graduating with honors in psychology and working as an interior designer, she finally succumbed to her overactive imagination and returned to her first love: writing. And when she’s not writing, she’s dreaming of magical worlds full of dragon-shifters, elite assassins, and romance that’s too hot to handle. Callahan currently lives in Canada with her family and writing buddy, a fun-loving golden retriever.
