The Making of the Lamb brings to life ancient legends in Southwest Britain that Jesus journeyed there during his adolescent missing years, and it challenges readers to consider how Jesus might have confronted his tragic destiny to die a horrible death at an early age. It’s a thought provoking and fast moving tale. Rave reviews demonstrate the appeal of this book to everyone, religious or not.

Here’s the set-up:

Twelve year-old Jesus teaches in the temple, the last episode of his life in the Bible before the age of thirty. He considers himself to be a conquering King David type of Messiah who will free the Jewish people. The temple authorities consider him dangerous and blasphemous.

After returning to Nazareth, his family realizes that Jesus will not stop teaching from his heart and that the temple Sadducees are closing in. The Romans will care for Jesus’s teachings even less, so he must be sent beyond their realm too. Mary’s uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, trades in tin with still unconquered Britain, and he takes Jesus with him.

On the way, Jesus envisions his crucifixion. He misinterprets a prophecy and believes that his heavenly Father will save him when the time comes. Uncle Joseph hears of this and realizes that Jesus will really die if the Romans put him on the Cross, but he thinks Jesus can avoid that fate by turning his life towards peace. Joseph keeps this secret from Jesus, believing that God will reveal the truth at the right time.

Joseph leaves Jesus in Britain with his own son Daniel as he comes and goes. Jesus and Daniel mature and make new friends and enemies among the Celtic people and their druids. To prepare for his chosen destiny Jesus learns to fight, even taking part in battle, much to Joseph’s despair. Jesus grows in his wisdom and compassion. He shows himself to be brave and impetuous but also deeply philosophical.

Jesus finally learns the tragic fate God has in mind for him, and all his plans are suddenly ripped away. He is angry. How will he ever accept God’s plan? Salvation for all hangs in the balance as he sorts out the path his life will take.
