Here’s the set-up:
In the days leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil way, two young men with vastly differrent backgrounds find their lives to be intertwinded. Sterling Louchs, a student at the Pennsylvania Agricultural College starts to travel to his home following the cancelling of classes due to the invasion of Confederate troops to the south. Benjamin Taylor a young slave flees from his master on learning that he is in the newly formed free state of West Virgininia. In the days following their coming together they having a variety of experiences. Avoiding Confederate troops is a major issue. They reach Sterling,s home on the eve of the Battle of Gettysburg. Subsequently arrangements are made for Benjamin to depart the area for localities where he can began to build a new life. In that process, Sterling meets a young woman, Naomi Paup who will later become his wife. Sterling’s father dies unexpectedly which places him in the role of head of houshold and ends any pospects of continuing his education. An epilogue deals with the later years of the characters.
