Here’s the set-up:

Tears stream down her face as she feels the cold blade press against her neck. The sweet scent of her daughter’s favorite strawberry pancakes all around, her last thought is for her beautiful girl. Please, please let Lisa have escaped.

When Detective Casey White is called early one morning to a beachside vacation campsite in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she finds the bodies of Carl and Peggy Pearson side-by-side, their throats cut, and their thirteen-year-old daughter Lisa nowhere to be found. Haunted by memories of her own missing girl, Casey fears this could soon become a triple murder: because without the medication found in the bathroom cabinet, Lisa has just days to live.

As her team struggle to untangle the meaning of the cryptic symbol carved into the victims’ skin, Casey searches the area for signs of Lisa and is rewarded when she finds her blistered and barefoot, staggering along the highway. The girl barely has breath left to whisper ‘he invited me’ before blacking out.

Days later, another couple is found murdered on a vacation yacht. A different symbol is etched on their bodies, and their teenage daughter is also missing. Casey’s only clue is an unsettling ‘invitation’ found on the girl’s phone, to a secluded building out in the cornfields.

Desperate to uncover who is luring these innocent families to their deaths, and certain forensics have missed something vital, Casey matches up the crime scene photos herself. The symbols combine to form an upcoming date. The killer is taunting them with the timing of the next murder.

Racing to follow the invitation in time, when Casey arrives she is shocked to glimpse not the missing girls from this case, but her own missing daughter…

Here’s the set-up:

The Age of Enlightenment will bring more hardship than reason, as three young women set out to shape their futures – and pay the ultimate price.

By the end of the 18th century, German high society is on the precipice of enlightenment. Rachel Levin, the restless daughter in a successful family of merchants, forms a strong and lasting connection with Henrietta and Dorothea – each of them a member of known and well-respected Jewish families. Yet the three of them are far from respected, or free. In a society where a woman’s value is measured by the man in front of her, the three independent-thinking women set out to make their own paths in life – as Berlin’s most popular Salonnières.

United by their passion on the backdrop of rising German nationalism, where being born Jewish, not to mention a woman, is far from advantageous – Rachel, Henrietta, and Dorothea each face challenges of the mind, soul, and heart. Finding their place in history will not only put them at risk. They will soon find their dreams can cost them far more than their status.

Here’s the set-up:

After losing his mother and father at the age of thirteen, the young Bart Carter finds himself alone in strange country on his way to Colorado. Not long into his trek, he comes across a drunk who uses a long leather whip on him. One lash cuts a gash from the boy’s ear to his chin, marking him for life with a grotesque scar. Bart is dying of infection in his injuries when Liz Douglas, a girl his own age who was traveling in a wagon train with her parents, finds him lying unconscious in a field. Bart becomes a member of the Douglas family, and as time passes, Bart’s and Liz’s relationship blossoms, even though they aren’t aware of it.

It takes months, but Bart finally accepts his appearance and earns his way into society’s mainstream in the little Colorado town of Flat Peaks. During his trek on the wagon train, Bart generates a friendship with the Navajo and Ute Indians, especially with an old chief of great importance, which becomes vital as the family ventures into ranching.

As Bart matures, he learns to drive and service cattle. He learns to hunt wild animals and the skill of fighting from Mr. Douglas. As time passes, Bart and Liz leave the ranch and go their own way, Bart to Chicago where he works in a cattle slaughter plant, and Liz to Philadelphia to finishing school to become a school teacher.

Returning to Flat Peaks a few years later, Liz has matured into a beautiful woman, and Bart, or Scar as he is now known, has grown into a tall, muscular man. It takes a near death experience of Scar getting shot by hoodlums for Liz and Bart to face the reality of their love for each other. Scar thinks Liz is more deserving of someone who can shower her with life’s luxuries, but Liz has different ideas.
