Mary Mycio was born in Poland to Ukrainian parents who immigrated to the United States when she was one year old. She reported on Ukraine for the Los Angeles Times between 1991 and 2003 while also directing a legal aid program for Ukrainian journalists. Since then, she has been splitting her time between international development consulting and writing. Her first book, Wormwood Forest: A Natural History of Chernobyl, was published in 2005. Her debut thriller about nuclear smuggling, Doing Бizne$$, is an eBook on Amazon. Her current project is a historical fantasy novel. She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, three cats and a horse.

These scenes are richly detailed and written with the authenticity of eyewitness accounts, which is not surprising as Mycio was based in Kiev for many years, reporting as a journalist on topics including the nuclear disarmament of Ukraine. This is a book of fiction, based on facts, which are presented at the opening of each chapter in the form of news bulletins. I have a special interest in Ukraine and learned an enormous amount from information in the bulletins. They're dense and detailed and will require concentration, especially if you know nothing about Ukraine or nuclear disarmament. But if you make the effort to read them carefully, you will come away with unique knowledge of an under reported period in history. Or, you can just enjoy a well-written, fast paced thriller with an intriguing cast of characters.
