Here’s the set-up:

Unethical, greedy, and illicit – welcome to the operating room at Masonville General Hospital.

Anesthesiologist Viktoria Thorsdottir is no ordinary physician and she’s accustomed to working temporary assignments. In her travels, however, she’s never been greeted by such a stark, icy-cold reception from O.R. personnel like the one she encounters at Masonville General.

˃˃˃ Viktoria is an expert at making her patients comfortable, so why do they continue to feel pain?

Dr. Thorsdottir discovers that there are forces at work in this Northern Pennsylvania hospital that she doesn’t understand; forces that the doctors in charge pretend don’t exist. In the face of growing animosity towards her, she begins to stealthily monitor the nurse anesthetists she supervises, and must become as diabolical as they are to discover the disturbing truth of the community’s anesthesia services. As Viktoria’s situation becomes more complex, it is apparent that there is more than one sinister secret hidden in the department!
˃˃˃ This is Book One in the Outlander Physician Series.

Here’s the set-up:

At the bleeding edge of space…

“War’s Edge puts the military back into military science fiction, in what is destined to be considered a classic along the lines of Starship Troopers, Dune, and The Forever War. Gritty action, military realism, compelling science fiction, and believable characters make this book a must read for sci-fi fans.” Nathaniel Timberlake

In the 35th Century, mankind has colonized vast reaches of space, yet war remains constant as galactic governments and interstellar corporations fight for control of resource-rich planets and lucrative interstellar trade routes. And if centuries of war has taught man one thing, it’s that planets are valuable and lives are cheap.

In a desperate attempt to escape his current life, Mark Rizer drops out of his prestigious university and enlists in the elite Marines of the United Systems Alliance defense forces. It’s a decision that will take him across the galaxy, first to endure a sadistic boot camp designed to transform him into a ruthless killing machine, and then to join the ranks of the hardened Marines of Murder Company.

Deployed to Verdant, a remote jungle moon at the edge of Alliance space, Mark finds himself fighting a ghostly enemy in an unending conflict where victories are measured in body counts and death is the only ticket home. The daily grind of combat patrols transforms good men into cold-blooded killers and weak ones into bitter memories. At the bleeding edge of space, Mark learns the true cost of war as he fights for his life, his platoon mates, and his humanity.

In the 35th Century, war has evolved.

Man hasn’t.

Warning: This book contains graphic violence, profanity, and sexual content. It is intended for a mature audience. Reader discretion is advised.

“Even if you’re not a fan of military action/adventure stories, this one will grab your attention and keep it. The characters are interesting and distinct, and the action is fast and furious. It’s evident the author has experience with military and weapons, and the details, weapons and battle scenes are spot-on.” -Robin Surface

Kurtz and Barent Mystery Series: Books 1-3

by Robert I. Katz
4.6 stars – 12 reviews
Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

The first three books in the Kurtz and Barent mystery series, now available in one convenient volume!

Surgeon Richard Kurtz has a reputation at Easton Medical Center as a tough guy, a reputation that he considers absurd, despite the 300-pound biker on a drug induced rampage who Kurtz recently knocked out in the ER. Kurtz has a growing practice, a luxury apartment on the East Side of Manhattan and a beautiful girlfriend.

Lew Barent has seen a lot of dead bodies in his job as a homicide detective. Barent has chronic migraine headaches, a wife and daughter he dotes on, a son-in-law he can barely stand and a job that he’s looking forward to leaving.

Fate, and murder, bring Kurtz and Barent together, but it turns out the two men, seemingly so different, have a lot in common: they don’t pull their punches, they never give up, they have an obsessive need to see justice served, and neither runs from a fight.

In Surgical Risk: when Kurtz’ former girlfriend, obstetrician Sharon Lee, is found strangled in a hospital call room, Kurtz and Barent are drawn into a twisted tale of murder, betrayal and brutal revenge.

In The Anatomy Lesson: when anatomy professor Rod Mahoney is found torn to pieces in his office, Kurtz and Barent must hunt the murderer, while the murderer is hunting Kurtz.

In Seizure: when elderly philanthropist Eleanor Herbert dreams that she’s witnessed a murder and a young hospital administrator turns up dead, Kurtz and Barent investigate a decades old conspiracy that the organized crime families of New York will kill to keep secret.

Gone on Sunday: A Cotton Lee Penn Historical Mystery (Cotton Lee Penn Historical Mysteries Book 1)

by Tower Lowe
4.5 stars – 51 reviews
Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Mystery, suspense, empowered women. Polio disabled Cotton Lee’s leg, but not her sexuality, not her mind, and not her ability to connect the murder of her friend Little Mary in 1972 to that of Bead Baker in 1932. Cotton Lee is a person with a disability but disability does not define her. Gone on Sunday is a literary mystery that follows the lives of the Baker family, their black servants, and the townspeople they knew in Homeville, Virginia. Alternating between 1972 and 1932, Cotton Lee’s investigation into the murder of Bead Baker brings out secrets kept for decades. With suspects ranging from a housewife, to a cook, and even a rumored witch, Cotton Lee needs to find the solution to the first murder in order to know the history of the second.

Each Tower Lowe mystery involves characters with disabilities: autism, physical impairments, mental impairments, etc. These characters are part of the narrative life of the novel, not the subject of the book. Her upcoming release features Spree, a neurodiverse character who is a key member of a family detective agency. Silencing Sistine by Tower Lowe is not being submitted to publishers.
