Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Kevin Manus-Pennings’ A SHORE TOO FAR is Our eBook of the Day at just $2.99, with 5.0 Stars on One Review, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Kevin Manus-Pennings’ A Shore Too Far, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Princess Kara Asgrand is not only daughter to the king but also the greatest military mind of her era. Throughout the kingdom of Avandi and, indeed, the entire continent of Damendine, High General Kara is known as an unstoppable genius on the battlefield. No amount of genius, however, could have prepared Kara for the arrival of a wondrous fleet of great ships unlike anything ever seen. When the strange passengers disembark from the ships by the thousands, Kara is confronted with a sprawling tent city on Avandi’s shore. The visitors, the Kullobrini, weave a tale of a lost expedition and ships riddled with disease and beg time to cleanse their vessels.

As the days pass, however, holes appear in the Kullobrini’s story, and with every answer a new question arises. If the Kullobrini are hostile, they will cost Kara’s forces dearly. Regardless, Kara must defend her father’s kingdom, but she cannot ignore that her own life of war has made her judgment suspect.…

Kara must decide what are the limits of one people’s compassion for another? And how far should one people go to protect themselves? If she trusts the Kullobrini wrongly, she could lose her father’s kingdom, but if she chooses war because it is the answer she has come to expect then she could lose her soul.

From the reviewer:

“A Shore Too Far” is a very entertaining series debut which takes place on a secondary world with the usual pseudo-medieval society but with no magic so far. The novel is a first person narration from Kara Asgrand, daughter of the king of Avandi and commander in chief of the army.  Overall, A Shore Too Far (A+) is another very promising indie series debut which I recommend for a fast and very enjoyable read. I also want to note that the novel wraps up its main storyline so it’s a standalone from this point of view, but of course more is promised in the interesting universe created by the author.  Note: This review has been originally published on Fantasy Book Critic and all links and references are to be found there.   Liviu C. Kathryn Shay’s TIES THAT BIND is Our eBook of the Day at just $3.99, with 3.5 Stars on Two Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Kathryn Shay’s Ties That Bind, just $3.99 on Kindle:

In her research on the legal system, Kathryn Shay followed lawyers, a public defender and a district attorney through their day and into court.

Reese Bishop would like to think he’s gotten over his ex-wife, Judge Kate Renado, and vice versa. But when they’re thrown together to disprove an accusation by a former clients, who they represented in their high powered law firm, everything between them gets murky.

The facts that they’re both involved with wonderful new partners, their daughter Sofie has barely accepted their divorce, and the totally unexpected cover-up in the prison system can’t quell the explosive attraction and deep love that surfaces when they work to prove their innocence.

Readers will be shocked by the turn of events in this novel.

From the reviewers:

“Shay has crafted a novel with an intriguing premise and, best of all, with two protagonists who unleash tons of conflict in their wake.” — RT Book Reviews

“The book is so readable…Kathryn Shay writes some of the cleanest prose around, and it’s my belief she’d make the Yellow Pages sound interesting if the phone company put her on staff…the story was brisk and kept me reading. And Ms. Shay knows her way around a steamy love scene.” The Romance Reader

“TIES THAT BIND was a compelling story that evoked strong emotions and I…found that I was compelled to turn the pages.” Joyfully Reviewed.

Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first ‘romance,’ a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists – and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women’s college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who’d attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, “I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that.”

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she’d again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-two books for Harlequin, ten mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations – readers say they feel they know the people in her books – and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has had a one of her books serialized in the December 2003 COSMOPOLITAN magazine and has been quoted in PEOPLE and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. She has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. “My life is very full,” she reports, “but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams.”

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Steve Silkin’s THE TELESCOPE BUILDER is Our eBook of the Day at just 99 Cents, with 3.6 Stars on 5 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Steve Silkin’s The Telescope Builder, just 99 Cents on Kindle:

A collection of 15 short stories about coming of age “in California in the 1970s … drugs, sex, family break-up, teen suicide … all told in a minimalistic style that in all reality belongs to the teenage male.”

From the book: “I had just moved to a new neighborhood freshly carved out of a hillside on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley.

My junior high was named after George Ellery Hale, the man who built the telescope that unveiled the secrets of the universe. I’ve thought about Hale over the years, the man, his telescope, the school named after him and the students and teachers I knew there. It was in those days that a body was dumped up the street from my house. Then there was the kid who went home from school one day and shot himself in the head. And then there was the classmate I admired who later got addicted to crack and died of exposure sleeping on a downtown street. I’ve thought about it all a lot.

“It must mean something. It must.”

From the reviewers:

Jonathan Penton, editor of Unlikely Stories, says: “He sets up his characters, reveals the situation and then tears through your consciousness like a bullet. His stories tell tales of lessons learned in the most agonizing possible ways, traumas that leave scars on the flesh and minds of their victims … Chilling and direct.”

At once a celebration of young adulthood and list of regrets over misspent youth, these tales depict rites of passage, from young love to misadventure, and other universal moments of adolescent angst and euphoria that help forge who we become as adults. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the 60s and 70s, the setting for this book, I was drawn in by the sense of time and place and subsequently discovered crisply written prose, well-drawn characters and the recounting of everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. – “Book Guy”

There is something about a youthful narrative that always ropes me in. It could be my early exposure to the genius of Harper Lee and J.D. Salinger, or more directly (and more likely), the honest optimism I find in such a voice. A gallery of high school recollections, ‘Telescope Builder’ focuses on not one particular event or even any life-changing moments. It is simpler than that. Our twelve year old narrator is the new kid at George Ellery Hale Junior High, going through the obligatory adjusting and social shuffling of evey new high school student the world over. In the subsequent chapters we are treated to a candid look at school days in California in the 1970s … drugs, sex, family break-up, teen suicide … all told in a minimalistic style that in all reality belongs to the teenage male. – Joanne David

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Angela White’s THE SURVIVORS: BOOK ONE (LIFE AFTER WAR) is Our eBook of the Day, Currently FREE, With 3.7 Stars on 55 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Angela White’s The Survivors: Book One (Life After War), FREE on Amazon Kindle:

“This is Safe Haven Refugee Camp. Can anyone hear me?
Hello? Is anyone out there?”

The end of the world has given us a harsh, merciless existence, where nature tries hard to push mankind to the very brink of extinction. Everything is against us, between us…

Untold miles of lawless, angry roads wait for our feet, and the Future, cold and dark, offers little comfort. Without CHANGE, there will be no peace. Only Survivors.

Fated to lead New America, seven special people survive the apocalypse, only to find themselves on an adventure that will shake the very core of who they thought they were. From dangerous trips into dark, decaying cities, to patriotic rescues and magic revelations, Life After War is an action-packed fantasy where those left must come to terms with their mistakes in the old world, while fighting for a place in the new one.

The Survivors: Book One. It’s the start of a new magic, fantasy, and horror series that Stephen King and Stephanie Meyer fans have been hoping for. This way, please…

The Survivors has been an Amazon bestseller in fantasy series, dark fantasy, science fiction adventure, and romance series, 29 consecutive weeks and sold more than 10,000 copies in its first year.

From the reviewers:

“Seven very gifted survivors are destined to rebuild their country after a nuclear apocalypse… If they can stay alive long enough to find each other. Impossible to put down.  Set along the lines of The Stand and The Postman, this is a chilling vision of the collapse of all society and the rebirth of a nation by those who survived. So much more than just another fantasy quest.”  -The Review Shop

I happen to be a nut for end of the world fiction, movies and books and this vision of the future is truely chilling. I loved it. It was so realistic! From the nuclear blasts to the way society simply collapsed. Great writing, very vivid. I could almost feel the sparks between the Mother an the Father and there’s a lot of action. Tornadoes, sand storms. Just a great read. Can’t wait to dig into book two, on the road.  –  Dave

I love post apocalyptic fiction and this one hit the spot! Well written, it combines some classic elements of the genre (a group of unlikely companions) with a gritty portrayal of what the leftovers of an apocalypse could look like. I enjoyed this a lot and look to read more of the series.  –  Adrian

The Survivors: Book One (Life After War) is like nothing I’ve read before. I’ve never been one for this genre. But here’s the truth, the structure is quickly overlooked once this book engages you, forcing you to regard the intense relatable circumstances. As I blazed through the final pages I had to ask myself. Can this really happen here?

I seldom ever pick up a book that forces me to do more than just google, but rather engage my friends and family to ask them, and myself what if?   –  Trisha Elizabeth

I was told a writer’s bio was mandatory if I wanted to be taken seriously as an Author. Despite wondering if that’s true (It’s the story that matters, right?) I dug in and this is what I came out with:

Hello,
I’m Angie. (Pen name)

Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, lets you and I take a little stroll. There’s a story I need to let out of its cage and I think it’s one you need to hear. It’s about the end of the world as we know it…

PS. Little pleases me more than to explore the dark fantasy and horror stories in my head. Knowing other people like them is second only to the magic of this new career I’ve chosen so feel free to drop me a line or post a review.

As a die-hard Cincinnatian, I much prefer writing to the stresses of being a city Taxicab dispatcher. Thank you for making my dreams possible and for looking at this page. I doubt many do.

Also:(This is NOT a 3 set series. I never said it would be done in three books. )

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Jacki Lyon’s THE MARRIAGE OF SILENCE AND SIN is Our eBook of the Day at just $2.99, with 5 Stars on 7 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up Jacki Lyon’s The Marriage of Silence and Sin, just 2.99 on Kindle:

The Marriage of Silence and Sin won the SILVER MEDAL for the 2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards for the mystery/suspense/thriller category. If you like Jodi Picoult or Stieg Larsson, the book will grab you and run.

The plot-driven story takes the reader on an electric ride from the sleepy banks of the Ohio to Ciudad Juarez, unfolding a grisly mystery.

Dicey Carmichael, a quirky British literature professor, is faced with the alleged suicide of a friend and former student. Convinced the death was a tragedy much more sinister, Dicey draws her best friend, Gale Knightly, an uptight, fast-track lawyer, into the lethal web to help uncover the horrific truth.

Desperate to find answers, Dicey and Gale turn to the artwork the young woman left behind. Her provocative and disturbing paintings give voice to the tortured past she could not confess in life. But was her past so dark that she preferred death over life?

What if the young artist knew that someone she loved was in danger? Perhaps then she would speak out—even if it meant forfeiting her life at the hands of a killer. As Dicey and Gale dig deeper into the mystery of the girl’s death, they find disturbing connections within their own lives. As they seek to give voice to their dead friend, the women must first face their own fears and prejudices to finally uncover the murderer. Will the best friends untangle the tragedy before death strikes again, but this time much closer to home?

Draped in wit and irony, The Marriage of Silence and Sin is a riveting, cautionary tale that explores the intermingling of human experiences, choice and fate in molding the human condition.

From the reviewers:

“Many of the secrets revealed in The Marriage of Silence and Sin are dark indeed, yet Lyon never wallows in them nor uses them for gratuitous purposes. . . . The characters are vibrant, believable, and relevant to the contemporary world. . . . Lyon’s debut novel is well worth reading. She is a writer to watch for in the future.” –Janine Stinson, ForeWord Clarion Review.

Anne K. Mellor, Distinguished Professor of English, UCLA, read The Marriage of Silence and Sin with “great pleasure.”

“Spent the whole morning in bed reading your book! Could not put it down . . . LOVED IT!” — Julie Martina, Anderson Township

“Your book is riveting! I’ve written that ‘I’ve finished . . .  BUT, the story will remain with me for a long, long time! At the end . . . my heart rate/blood pressure was UP and RACING in the wee hours of the morning . . . . the story left me feeling every emotion humanly possible ! It made me sad, happy, laugh and scared to death!” — Mary Joe Karch, Cincinnati

The Marriage of Silence and Sin is a “can’t put down” novel filled with intrigue and suspense. The story starts at the funeral of a young girl who committed suicide. Her father, friends and boyfriend are all in attendance. The story then gets into the minds of these characters, ultimately ending with an interesting twist. Great read!  –  “Bam”
