How could Emily know, as she left her house that evening, that she was making an appointment with death?
From Helen Smith, one of our favorite UK authors … the perfect British mystery for just $.99…
“This is a perfectly formed mystery in every way; each necessary clue is present and followed up, though, as you would expect from a well-constructed mystery, there are plenty of false clues and blind alleys.” –P. J. Salisbury, author
It’s bonfire night in London. Emily has been invited to a party in the big house at the end of her street by the new owners, whom she has never met. Emily’s dog Jessie has recently died so Emily is feeling a little raw and emotional. How could she know, as she left her house that evening, that she was making an appointment with death?
Three Sisters is short fiction – approximately 17,000 words, equivalent to around 70 printed pages. It is the first story in a new comic mystery series by award-winning novelist Helen Smith, featuring amateur sleuth, Emily Castles. It contains no profanity or sexual content.
What the Reviewers Say
“I bought “The Three Sisters” before the product description was even up, because I am a big fan of Helen Smith and all her books, and I was not disappointed. At 70-ish pages, this story is longer than your average short story, yet even in a short space, Helen manages to create a sympathetic and likeable main character, Emily Castles. I look forward to reading the further adventures of Emily.” –Anne Marie
“Love this short little mystery. I read it in one afternoon and REALLY enjoyed the way the author set up the story. Kind of a murder mystery theater gone wrong. Makes me wish I could have been there. 🙂 Keep ’em coming Helen!” –NYM

What the Reviewers Say
“This is a wonderful book about romance and vendetta at the same time. An easy read. I loved the characters. Brenda has a way of bringing her characters to life.” –Suzi Reece
“Loved it! It kept me hooked, made me laugh and best of all, I fell in love with the characters. I would recommend it to all types. Well done!” –Laura Oig
There’s a new voice in woman’s fiction and it belongs to Brenda Sedore. A Snake in Paradise is an engaging read, one I highly recommend. Aja’s world is turned upside down when the slip of a knife sets a vengeful plot in motion. The most appealing aspect in this book is the way Brenda effortlessly draws us into the story. The characters sparkle, pulling us into their world, giving the reader a sense that they are part of the action, whether it’s the strong female friendships, or the fending off of the attentions of the devastatingly appealing male Italian characters. You’ll find yourself cheering Aja on in her brave quest to rebuild her life, despite the repeated attempts of her ex to destroy her. This book has it all. Tears, fears, laugh out loud lines, spine tingling moments and unexpected romance.
Brenda Sedore is a skilled wordsmith, making us feel the emotions of her characters, while spinning an enticing plot, making this book one that is hard to put down. There are a few unexpected twists, guaranteed to please readers. The descriptions are vivid, the characters make you wish you could sit down and enjoy a glass of wine with them. I give this book five stars, it never disappoints, and am eagerly anticipating Ms. Sedore’s next novel. –Lori Gordan
About the Author
Being born in the wine country of Northern California started Brenda’s lifelong love of the grape. She moved to Canada as a teenager and eventually ended up in wine country again. It’s probably not a great surprise that wine is a large part of her debut novel, A Snake in Paradise.
Brenda has been writing for over a dozen years. Her goal as a writer is to tell great stories, but also to leave her readers with memorable characters; ones they think of as friends. Brenda writes in Kelowna, BC with her husband, Author Daryl Sedore.

“Short stories are a helluva good read…Great Stephen King twist at the end.” –-Shelley Brewster, Lady Trial Lawyer
Here’s the set-up:
“The Road to Hell” collects four stories by Paul Levine, the Edgar-nominated author of the bestselling Jake Lassiter series. Levine’s heroes travel dark and dangerous paths as they confront devilish and powerful villains. The journeys are by land, by sea, and in one case, perhaps only in the mind.
In “El Valiente en el Infierno,” (The Brave One in Hell), a 13-year-old Mexican boy tells his own story as he makes a treacherous midnight crossing into California in search of his father. The boy’s courage is tested when he runs into two gun-toting American vigilantes, and the confrontation will change all of them forever.
“Development Hell” is a well-known Hollywood term symbolizing the purgatory where projects are stuck in “development,” rather than being made into films. The story imagines a pitch session in which a bedraggled Poe squares off with a slick Hollywood producer who wants to make a cheesy slasher flick out of “The Pit and the Pendulum.” Bookgasm praised the story as “going straight to the funny bone.”
“A Hell of a Crime” echoes with notions of “The Twilight Zone.” A prosecutor prepares for a homicide trial while being pestered by his domineering mother, a famous lawyer herself. Just what role did she play in the murder? And how is the prosecutor’s enigmatic wife involved in the case? It’s a mystery with a punch to the gut at the end.
Two of the author’s best-loved characters, Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, appear in “Solomon & Lord: To Hell and Back.” The ethically-challenged Steve Solomon and the very proper Victoria Lord are mismatched Miami law partners. Steve says he’s going fishing with Manuel Cruz, a sleazy con man. Victoria knows that Cruz embezzled a bundle from Steve’s favorite client and is an unlikely fishing buddy. So just what is Steve up to now? Something between mischief and murder, Victoria figures. To protect Steve from himself – and Cruz – she hops aboard the boat, and the three of them head for deep water and dark troubles.
What the Reviewers Say
“The “Solomon and Lord” novels have been nominated for the Edgar, Macavity and International Thriller Awards, as well as the James Thurber Humor Prize. “Remarkably fresh and original with characters you can’t help loving and sparkling dialogue that echoes the Hepburn-Tracy screwball comedies. A hilarious, touching and entertaining twist on the legal thriller.” –-Chicago Sun-Times
An excerpt of “Mortal Sin,” one of the award-winning Jake Lassiter novels, is also included in the collection. This time, the linebacker-turned-lawyer has a dangerous conflict of interest. He’s sleeping with Nicky Florio’s wife…and defending the mob-connected millionaire in court. Florio has hatched a scheme deep in the Florida Everglades that oozes corruption, blood, and money. One false move, and Jake will be gator bait. “Recalling the work of Carl Hiaasen, this thriller races to a smashing climax.”
–-Library Journal
About the Author
The author of 14 novels, Paul Levine won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and was nominated for the Edgar, Macavity, International Thriller, and James Thurber prizes. A former trial lawyer, he also wrote 20 episodes of the CBS military drama “JAG.” His next novel will be “Lassiter” in Fall 2011. More at http://www.paul-levine.com

We start the last week of February with a “Prescription for Trouble” in the form of a medical thriller from Dr. Richard Mabry, which shares top billing with seven brand new nonfiction freebies atop this morning’s latest additions to our 200+ Free Book Alert listings….
But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor
Imagine a world where death is merely an inconvenience and we are endlessly reincarnated. But there’s a catch: we are the slaves of those who hate creativity and independence. Find out what our reluctant but rebellious hero learns, and what it costs him….
But it will only cost you 99 cents!
“”Dead Forever Awakening is a fascinating science fiction adventure, highly recommended.” — Midwest Book Review
Imagine a world where death is merely an inconvenience. A new body awaits and we resume living, fully aware of the past. Every love, talent and distaste, retained from one life to the next. But this immortal paradise has a price — eternal life as slaves, oppressed by masters who forbid individuality, creative expression, and free thinking.
A band of rebels refuses to conform, but for a population that reincarnates, the government is powerless to eliminate insurgents. Putting them to death is useless. The rebels will return, again and again. The final solution — perpetual amnesia. Kill their memory of past lives, and banish the rebels to a lonely corner of the galaxy.
Robbed of his identity and purpose, a reluctant hero is dumped into a transient existence, and he regards himself as insignificant. But he is of great interest to agents in black who come to collect him. His decision to flee begins a journey of rediscovery, but some of it he would rather leave buried. When an oddball crew of fellow rebels comes to his rescue, the boundaries of reality are tested, and who to trust is anyone’s guess.
Eager to arouse his memory, a flirtatious member of the rebel team shows him the life he once enjoyed, and more, as he returns to a strange world where bodies are manufactured and childhood is obsolete. If only he could be a child again. First he’ll have to remember how to reincarnate.
Awakening begins the Dead Forever trilogy, followed by Apotheosis and Resonance.
What the Reviewers Say
“Awakening is a professionally written and solidly edited book that I feel is well worth the price and time you’ll spend on it. Cool science concepts made believable and an interesting story line by an author who’s unafraid to have some fun while he’s writing.” — Clayton Bye, The Deepening World of Fiction
“In the action adventure, the pace is non-stop race from being back in the hands of authority and always questioning the position and actions of the rebel group. The characters are a little odd, but extremely realistic and likable. The personal voice is the strength of the novel in that you feel as if you really live in the main hero’s body with him.” — Teri Davis, Reviews by Teri blogspot
“Each character has a unique personality and Campbell does a great job of bringing them to life.” — Charline Ratcliff, Rebecca’s Reads

A gregarious walrus pup, a cantankerous scientist, an Australian sex goddess, a Star Wars obsessed six-year-old, and friends and nemeses past and present rock L.A. publicist Sydney Green’s well-ordered world…
“I found this novel utterly riveting as I tagged along with Sydney on her adventures. . . The secondary characters are also endowed with plausible motives and individualized characteristics making this story an exceptional read.” –Coffee Time Romance
In an age of cynicism, is it possible to become an idealist?
When Los Angeles publicist Sydney Green convinces her boss to let her produce a documentary for the Save the Walrus Foundation, the only one Sydney Green is interested in saving is herself. The walruses are merely a means to improving her career and her love life, and not necessarily in that order. Sydney would’ve killed the project the second she learned she’d be the one having to spend a month in rural Alaska if it had been for any other client. But for rising star and sometimes boyfriend Blake McKinley, no sacrifice is ever too great.
But a funny thing happens on the way to the Arctic. A gregarious walrus pup, a cantankerous scientist, an Australian sex goddess, a Star Wars obsessed six-year-old, and friends and nemeses both past and present rock Sydney Green’s well-ordered world. Soon Sydney is forced to choose between doing what’s easy and doing what’s right.
What the Reviewers Say
“What do you have when you take an LA Publicist, an ego driven movie star, an environmentalist and an island full of walrus? You have the ingredients for a great book that will take you from the glitter of Hollywood to a remote, rustic island where you will find love, jealousy and a concern for the walrus. The author manages to put you right in the heart of the Alaskan Island and in the midst of a romantic tale. This is really a great story and I highly recommend it.” –Frankie S.
“It must be really hard to write something as sweet and readable as this is and still give it weight. Especially when the reader is so busy laughing at the antics of a city girl, accustomed to the bright lights of Hollywood, somehow dropped into the midst of one herd of cantankerous walruses and another of self-important tree huggers. The situation is funny, and there is even a most unlikely romance amidst the ice flows. “ –S. Bingen
