Consequences: Consequences, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 8,675 ratings

Anthony Rawlings had a plan - to teach Claire Nichols to behave. Claire Nichols had a plan - to survive! In an unfamiliar bedroom within a luxurious mansion, Claire Nichols wakes to memories of a brutal abduction. All of her recollections have one common denominator, the man she just met - Anthony Rawlings. Unbeknownst to Claire, Anthony has had her in his sights for a long time. Every action has consequences - and his actions resulted in their chance meeting. Facing incomprehensible circumstances, Claire must learn to survive as she comes to terms with her new reality - every aspect of her livelihood is now dependent upon the tall, dark-haired, dark-eyed tycoon. Anthony may appear to the world as a prosperous, benevolent, kind businessman, but in reality Claire learns he is also a menacing, controlling captor with very strict rules: Do as you're told, public failure is not an option, and don't divulge private information. Failure to follow these rules, and more, is met with serious consequences.

In an effort to earn her freedom, Claire learns her lessons well, and before long, she unknowingly captivates her captor. Anthony/Tony reluctantly becomes enthralled with Claire's beauty, resilience, and determination. Their interaction instigates strong emotions - including fear, anger, love, and lust - as their journey flows into uncharted waters of intrigue and passion.

From the opening criminal abduction, through the twists and turns, to the unlikely romantic thrills, the suspense climaxes as Aleatha Romig utilizes vivid detail, allowing this novel to unfold like a movie. Can you put the pieces of the puzzle together? Claire Nichols abduction wasn't a random act - did she learn her lessons well enough? Will these unlikely lovers remain true - or will she learn the truth before it's too late?

I don't usually write reviews, but thought I would share my experience with this series of books. First this is a series, not a stand alone read. Before I even finished the first book, I purchased the second in the series, and before finishing it, purchased all the rest. This author takes you on a complicated ride into the lives of a man greatly influenced by his grandfather. It is rather dark and abusive, so if you don't enjoy this type of read, don't bother. However, it grows out of that phase into a better frame of mind as the series continues. Not wishing to expose any events of the actual book, I love this author, and highly recomment this series. The author has brought to us a very complicated plot that carries you from page to page and book to book. I dread reaching the end, because I am so enjoying being part of the lives of this family, through the terrible and the delightful.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I bought Consequences 8th December 2012. I didn't read it fully until now. I saw Braine's review and that rather gah gif she has attached to her review on the 12th December 2012. I didn't read her review at the time, I saw some key words, lol and knew it would be good.

O.M.G.

Every thesaurus word I could look up wouldn't be enough to describe my emotions when reading this book. You only have to go to Goodreads and see the reviews. Everybody is saying similar things about this psychological thriller.

I have to take my hat off to Aleatha Romig, she is quite the master or mistress of plot.

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.

I did not read the blurb for this book. I saw Braine was uber excited about it on her blog Talk Supe at the time. I think this is a book that should be blurbless. Yes, I did say that word, blurbless because you really, truly, need to go in cold turkey like I did. I kept away from reading anything about it. I saw key words like mind fbomb ( being polite) . I am a Curious George by nature and I knew I had to read it. Time passed on and then I find myself on the Convicted blog tour.

Time to read a trilogy in a week.

Was I prepared mentally for this challenge? In hindsight. I think not.

Aleatha is crazy guuuuud at what she will do to you.

Aleatha will play with your mind.

Aleatha will play with your emotions.

You are her play toy.

Aleatha will give you a male lead that was very unexpected.

I'm not going to lie to you, some readers for their own personal reasons will find Anthony Rawlings's character very hard to read. I have never been affected by someone like Anthony and I found his actions quite hard to swallow. Parts are very hard to read. How could they not be?

This is what Aleatha wants to do to us. She is an outside-the-box writer. We often read about a guy who ends up our book boyfriend.

Anthony should be nobody's book boyfriend.

Yet, we continue reading. We can't look away. We want to find the good in Anthony. Is this all a huge colossal mistake? Is this a dream?

What the hell is going on?

I was trying to imagine Aleatha at her computer writing certain scenes.

Those , scenes.

I think they would be hard scenes to write from an emotional point of view. As females we don't want that to ever happen to us.

Aleatha is a brave author and it has worked for her. She has written two characters, Anthony and Claire who will leave you at times utterly...this is where I would bring out my thesaurus and dump a whole pile of words at you.

You will know what you are feeling. You won't be alone.

I couldn't but have this inner monologue war of words going on with Anthony and for different reasons, Claire, when reading. I have never read a book so far, that had me rambling on to myself in my head.

At one stage... trust me there will be many, but, there will be one that will out do the others, where you will be spluttering a whole pile of monologue to yourself.

You will know when you get to that one.

This is a very 3D read. Anthony did not stop surprising me. This book can't help but give you an ever changing opinion of Anthony and Claire.

I found it went in peaks and troughs. This is very clever writing on Aleatha's behalf. She will reel you in and then she will throw you in the deep end and then bring you back to the surface, repeatedly. Often spluttering for air.

I don't think I truly appreciated this story until I got to the end.

O.M.G.

When I review I always note. I wrote all my feelings down when reading this book. I wrote down my theories and the little seeds that Aleatha was dropping oh so subtle in this book. I was scooping them up and writing my thoughts next to them. I was doing some piecing. I now appreciate that cover to this book with the puzzle piece.

Everything Aleatha does is very deliberate. Very concise. Precise.

The thing is no matter how much you want to look away, once you start this book, you can't. You are intrigued to understand what the hell is going on. That is why this trilogy is so popular.

I was a little exhausted after finishing this book and kind of sat about rambling to myself like I needed a quiet corner to unwind.

But that is the brilliance of this book.

This is not a fairy tale, this is a well thought out, plotted story that is amazing when you get those final pieces at the end.

Is the picture complete? No. That is why we have Truth and then Convicted to complete the picture.

This is a very addictive read. You will be confused, asking yourself all sorts of questions. You will be questioning Claire's actions and her behaviour. I actually sat back for a while analysing Claire and my original thoughts on her character changed.

Claire's character's survival instincts kick in straight away, but when do those lines blur into something else less understanding for the reader. It is always easier looking through a window from the outside and judging.

If I was in Claire's shoes, I think my mind would have been broken. I think that is when I appreciated how strong Claire really is. Maybe we don't see this at first, but then we do. Sitting in my bed watching Claire and being Claire are two different things.

Her mind was beyond comprehension; thinking outside of the box was more than she could handle. She remembered an agreement with herself for self-preservation, conceding to demands. Yet at this moment in time, Claire didn't know or understand what she was doing, agreeing to, or being forced to do.

Anthony is a character that sends greatly differing signals to Claire. My head was quite thick and heavy when watching Anthony. I was overloaded with disdain. I was imagining rather evil thoughts of standing over him while he slept with a sledge hammer. I felt exhausted with all that Claire was put through.

I think that is when I really appreciated Claire's character. She has people like Catherine, the jury is still out on her with me, who tell her what a wonderful man Tony is.

WTH!

"Ms. Claire, you have had the rare opportunity to get to know Mr. Rawlings in a way most do not."

"Mr. Rawlings is a good man, Ms Claire. He truly is."

There are two sides to this man.

Both come with consequences.

He has business's, he makes gazillions , yet he has so much time to focus on Claire. She felt like prey to me. Prey he toyed with. The mental games.

Aleatha is just brilliant at how she will get her characters under your skin.

This I appreciated.

There will come a time when you thought you couldn't loathe Anthony anymore than you already did, but ... there will be another.

A totally unexpected read, that had me buried deep emotionally within the pages of love, lust, betrayal and intrigue. This really is a must to read. The writing will hold you captive and at times emotionally bruised.

I can't say I am not nervous about Truth and what Aleatha has in store for me. I am really having trouble imagining how she can top what she did with Consequences. This is where Braine said she would be laughing quietly at me because she knows what I am in for.

Will you be left with a couple questions rattling about in your beat up brain? Yes.

And this is what makes me want to open Truth , ASAP!

Strap yourselves in and be prepared for anything to be thrown at you, I highly recommend this read.

It is not often we meet a character that is so deeply unnerving like Mr Anthony Rawlings.

"Yes, I understand behaviors have consequences."

Answering honestly, she said, "Other times, I don't like you."

3.75 Stars or 4 Stars

Either way rounds to 4 Stars and that's the most I can give this.
My reasons for not giving it higher is,
#1. Overly long winded in areas that needed to be edited down. These are extensive descriptions of vacations, clothes, surrounding and on and on.
Cutting those areas down would have made this about 400 pages.
#2. Quite a few editing errors. The story would be flowing and then there would be page after page with typos and various errors.
#3. The stilted language. That always drives me nuts. I hate it. Nobody talks like that and it always interferes with the flow of a story.

Now, I have to say this is NOT a Love Story
It is NOT a romance.

What it is, is one of the hardest stories I have ever read in my life. It literally has my stomach twisting and many times shaking in pure FURY.

Are there sex scenes? Yes.
Some consensual some not. Do not take that statement lightly.
Physical abuse? Yes.

What more can I say?
The story continues for at least 2 more books.
By the end of this one I want to torture and kill Anthony myself.
And yes, I will be reading the next book.
Because this story grabs you by the guts and will not allow you to Look Away

I actually don't know if I have the courage to read all the books in this series. But I'm going to give it my best shot.

Strangest review I've ever written for the Strangest story I've ever read.

Summary: Intense, heart-stopping, thrilling book filled with layers of mystery, plot twists and vacillating emotions. Utterly unique and well-written. I couldn't put this book down!

Stars: 6 mind-bending, intense stars!

Main Characters: Anthony "Tony" Rawlings, Claire Nichols and a host of connected characters

Themes: Love, revenge, manipulation and so much more

Genre: Psychological thriller

What I ♥ The Most: So many things. The absolute uniqueness of the story. The brilliant writing. The quotes on each chapter. The intense emotions it evokes, many times in contradiction. And I LOVE the complicated characters that are both Claire and Tony.

If You Liked This Try: Truth, book #2, and then painfully wait for book #3, Convicted... because there's nothing like these books out there. I know it's been compared to Captive/Seduced In The Dark by CJ Roberts, but they are completely different books.
*************************************************************************************************

OHMYGOD these books. Seriously. INTENSE! At first, the story begins and I can't believe the cruelty of Claire's situation. I HATE Anthony Rawlings. HATE him. He's so cold and in control... always in 100% control. And because the story is primarily imparted from Claire's POV, I didn't often understand Tony's intent and feelings, which furthered the portrayal of his callousness and mercilessness.

The book immediately begins with 26-year-old Claire being kidnapped. She finds herself in an opulent bedroom suite in Iowa, held captive by a man she recently met while working as a bartender.

"The room looked like heaven, but she already knew it was hell."

When she wakes, she's disoriented and her body is bruised. She finds herself face-to-face with her captor.

"Anthony Rawlings was so different from the man she met less than a week ago--the handsome tall man, with brown hair and the darkest eyes she'd ever seen. He'd been polite, kind and gentlemanly. Last night, none of those words could be used to describe him. To say he was cruel would not explain what she endured. One could say demanding, aggressive, abrasive, controlling--but above all, brutal."

She's raped and she's abused, both mentally and physically, constantly and coldly reminded there are rules that MUST be followed.

Always do as your told and remember that behaviors always have consequences and "consequences can be unpleasant."

Anthony is surprised at Claire's fiery tenacity, but often times, her bravery results in such cruel consequences. As Claire reluctantly acquiesces to Anthony's rules, her "freedoms" increase. She escorts Anthony to events and learns perhaps his most important rule-- appearances are everything and public failure is not an option. And with daily reminders to not disappoint him, Anthony continues to be patronizing and abusive, callous and cruel.

"He hurt her--not just physically, but also emotionally--down to her core. He humiliated her and seemed to enjoy humiliating her routinely, since she arrived."

But Claire endures through compartmentalization. "This compartmentalization had facilitated her survival."

Claire is so tremendously brave. I love her character. Yes, there are many times you want her to drop the mask and fight and flee to escape this horrible situation. But it's a complicated one and I often reminded myself that there are always consequences. Yet, there are many times she does bravely stand up to Tony with small moments of defiance, brilliantly negotiating for her very minor privileges. And just when I thought I could not hate Tony more, he shows moments of kindness, warmth and even love.

"Anthony Rawlings never previously considered fulfilling someone else's desires. His entire adult life had been about his wants, goals, ambitions and needs... He no longer wanted to dominate, but to satisfy."

Glimmers of vulnerability seep through the perfect facade and Claire begins to see the real Tony... not only the dark side, but also the side which cares for her, the side that shows regret.

"Perhaps I'm afraid of losing you, afraid if you truly know me you will not want to stay with me."

During those times, I observed that like Claire, as a reader I was almost broken down so much that the smallest kindness seemed monumental. With those perceptions lacing my already-fragile emotions, Tony now seemed to me like a complicated man that could love and be worthy of being loved. But how could I think that? How could I possibly like him? How can I root for him? For them? Something was definitely wrong with me. As you read the second half of the book, there are so many more moments that confuse how you feel about Tony. You hate him. You love him. And then you hate him all over again.

There were a multitude of times I felt incredibly anxious about what could happen, times where I was frightened of the consequences that Claire would undoubtedly suffer. The tension I felt throughout was intense.

As the story continues to unwind, you realize just how much more it is beyond the complicated dynamic between Claire and Tony. Their situation is mysteriously rooted in the past. The plot is comprised of many unique puzzle pieces coming together slowly. And just when you think you've got it, and things normalize... the walls come crashing down. The story ends with a BANG. Mouth agape. Shock. Hurt. Angry. You absolutely HATE him again.

This book is so unique, so good and there are so many elements that made me LOVE it so much:

Unique story - The idea of this book is completely unique - the plot is intricately woven with unexpected turns that make your jaw drop. How she thought of this, I have no idea!
Stellar writing - The writing is so tight. Not superfluous at all, each word seemingly written with the intent of taking you to the next significant point in the story. And although the book is long, I was riveted and I wanted to know what would happen next. I really loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter that ranged from William Shakespeare and C.S. Lewis to Keri Russell. They set the tone for each chapter, preparing you for what would come next.
Character strength and complexity - Both Claire and Tony are flawed and complicated in different ways. Both make bad choices, both characters amazingly written. And they both evolve in the books and to see those changes come alive on the page is pretty great.
Shock value - I never knew what was coming next. I'm typically pretty good at figuring things out, but even though I was right some times, the way things would happen and the way things resulted were shocking. I loved that it had the ability to surprise me.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I immediately dove into book 2, Truth! As intense and emotionally-draining as this book was, I needed to know what would happen next. It fueled me to devour the next book. I definitely recommend this incredibly thrilling series!

"It is not the circumstances that make a person a success. It is how that person responds to those circumstances."

Like many other reviewers, I got the book for free, and didn't read it right away, and at first I thought it was rather weird what Anthony did to Claire, and I couldn't wait to get to the end to see if she would get justice, certainly didn't expect THAT ending. I couldn't put it down at that point. It was spellbinding. I plan on reading the sequels and see where that goes.

Claire was living a normal happy life until she woke up and realised that she was a prisoner, and that her capture was Anthony, who she had no idea who he was but soon learnt. She was debt free but he’s captive until he decided her debt was paid. Anthony was always firm about appearances being everything. Slowing Claire realised there was two side to Tony, and with the right behaviour, slowly Claire learnt to crave Tony, but it wasn’t until an error on her behalf that she truly learnt how appearance are everything, until she saw those appearances used against her.
