Dead (A Lot) (The Dead (a Lot) Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 138 ratings

Last Friday night, the world changed--and not for the better.

Zombies are among us. School's out for the foreseeable future, and with Mom and Dad at the lake house, my twin and I are on our own in this mess. Which is fine as long as we can avoid being on the menu.

Tripp Light's teenage world is suddenly filled with "poxers"--the infected ones, the ones that have the Necropoxy virus. In an entire world gone mad and bad, Tripp's only hope of survival is to clear a path through zombie land with his sister and head for the hills (aka his aunt's farm) to rendezvous with his parents.

Success clearly favors the fittest and the fastest. Survival demands the twins make hard, ruthless decisions, but that all changes when Tripp and his twin hear a distress call via the radio. Prianka Patel, a girl Tripp loves to hate, is trapped and surrounded in a bakery. Soon, the twins have quite a collection of misfits and survivors and miles to go before anyone can sleep safely again.

No matter where Tripp looks, everyone everywhere is dead.

Like really dead . . . a lot.

Howard Odentz is a life-long resident of Western Massachusetts, where he divides his time between writing and tending a small farm. His love of animals, along with the lore of the region, often finds its way into his stories. The supernatural plays a major role in Mr. Odentz's writing. He is endlessly fascinated by the psychological aspects of those who are thrown into otherworldly circumstances.

In addition to Dead (A Lot), he has penned two full length musical comedies, including "Piecemeal," which tells the backstory of Victor Frankenstein's Hollywood-created protégé, Igor.

This is my 4th book by this author. This one to me has the best of everything. It could translate well to the big screen. Humor, inclusion, creepiness, and a bit of zombie goo too. It is all there.

A fun read. I am a teacher so I like to read young adult novels to stay connected to my students and be able to recommend books I believe they will enjoy. I will definitely be recommending this book. The kids will love that it is set near where we live and is about the zombie apocalypse thatis all the rage. The characters are fun and relatable and appeal to many personalities.

I just finished reading Dead (a lot). It wasn't exactly my first choice genre, however, I was absolutely hooked from the very first line to the very last. It was (sorry for the cliche) a page turner, expertly written, laugh out loud funny, and a thoroughly enjoyable story. More importantly, it wasn't just another zombie story. It was a powerful social commentary on the ability of differently abled people to make a great contribution to society. True, this book is a fast-paced, great read, but it is also a great reminder of the importance of tolerance and creating community, regardless of what the members look like. I can't wait for volume 2.

not great literature. not fantastic, but a quick fun read. Worth the $2 I spent. I appreciate that with the exception of mentioning teenage sex, it was pretty free of sex and language. it had some descriptive gore, but not out of control for the subject matter

What a surprise!! I love horror and fantasy books but post-apocalyptic zombie stories are usually so dark and gloomy. Though this one has all the expected aspects I love (creepy situations, nerve-wracking suspense, jump out of your skin moments, and all that "learning how to deal with the walking dead"), it also has a humorous side that comes from Tripp's sarcastic wise-cracking view of the world. Tripp and his sister manage to handle the "end of the world as we know it" not all that differently than the shift from middle school to high school. I can't imagine any adult dealing with it all quite as easily. Between that and the sense of humor, Dead (A Lot) has a lighter attitude, an optimism missing in many zombie tales. I'd recommend it to any age reader. It's "hard to put down" and was a great summer read.

For a short book, there is a lot of story packed between the beginning and end. We start with teenage twins , alone for the weekend while their parents are on a short getaway. They witness the birth of the zombie apocalypse, watching as a boyfriend and neighbors turn into the proverbial walking dead. Following a short message from their Dad, they are told to make their way to an Aunt and Uncle's farm where they will all meet up.
Along the way they manage to pick up a fairly bizarre collection of people, none of whom are stupid or worthless! The trip to the farm is fraught with danger and it doesn't end upon reaching the farm. They all experience fear, but it never stops them or make them useless, talk about coming of age!

This is a fast read, but I really enjoyed it. There is nothing about a sequel, but there could easily be one.

I took a chance on this book because of the promotional price, and it paid off with a fun, interesting read with great characters and dialogue and a cool plot. Very well done. I immediately grabbed and began reading book 2 in the series. I recommend this book (and its followup) wholeheartedly.

I am not generally a horror reader...zombies aren't my thing...but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is suspenseful, but also very funny. I found myself slowing down and paying attention because there is some very clever writing that you can miss if you read too quickly. While the major characters are high school age, I think this book would appeal to a wide age range. The characters are well-developed and interesting. There is definitely a larger message than just saving the world from zombies. I am looking forward to trying other books by this author.
