Angels & Patriots: Sons of Liberty, Lexington & Concord, Bunker Hill Kindle Edition
Angels & Patriots is the violent struggle for freedom, played out on the battlefield and the firmament as the angels fend off the demons in a quest to serve both humans and God.
"Baker has done a superb job of creating a novel that takes us back in time, not only to the battlefield, but to the time of Gods. I love her imagination in this novel. It leaps off the pages with every setting. There were very few times where I wasn't completely engaged...a huge testament to her ability to convey action and emotion." - Novel News Network
Sons of Liberty, Lexington & Concord, Bunker Hill
On the eve of the Revolutionary War, American patriots are leaving their homes and families behind to stand firm against the British. What these early Americans do not realize, is that while they prepare themselves for their battles, a war is simultaneously playing out among the soldiers--one that poses a far greater threat to their lives and souls.
Demons that God created to kill a brotherhood of fallen angels are fanning the embers of the Revolutionary War to draw the angels out of hiding. They walk and fight alongside patriots and British soldiers alike.
Archangel, Colm Bohannon, leads his angel brothers to Boston to track down the demon leader and to warn John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Dr. Joseph Warren, and the Sons of Liberty that the British army is not their only threat. The patriots will need to engage with two enemy forces on the battlefield. As it stands, the band of angels is road weary and struggling with infighting and earthly temptations. Is faith a strong enough shield to fight off demon attacks and protect the patriots?
Angels & Patriots is the violent struggle for freedom, played out on the battlefield and the firmament as the angels fend off the demons in a quest to serve both humans and God.

Review
"Salina Baker continues to use her intimate knowledge of American Colonial History to create fantastical fiction. Her characters' long for salvation and solace. Spiritual realism at its finest." - Mindy Reed, author of Women of a Certain Age
"I love novels like this that compile multiple genres. They can get a bit murky if the author is not careful, or they can be even more imaginative and intriguing that other novels. Salina has definitely managed the latter." -- On A Reading Bender
"I loved the descriptive way [Angels & Patriots] was written. It really submerges the reader into the world... There were a lot of moving parts to [Angels & Patriots] and I really liked the originality that Baker brought." - Texas Book Nook
"[Angels & Patriots] was engaging and read very much like a movie... Salina B. Baker managed to give plenty of fictitious characteristics so that it didn't feel like a historical novel." -- My Reading Addiction
"...a beautiful piece of storytelling... I was very surprised by the amount of emotion she was able to evoke." - The Indie Express
"[Angels & Patriots] is an even better escape than reading Contemporary. Add to that the fantastical element with Gods and Demons and Angels, and I was sucked in. [Salina B Baker] has created a novel that really takes the reader on a fun journey." - A Life Through Books
"[Angels & Patriots] is nothing if not imaginative. I love the way we get history that everyone learned about in school and mix it with one of my favorite things, Fallen Angels." -- Momma and Her Stories

You could call it Fantasy Alternate History, but that is about it. And even then, someone is trying to make us think that this author accurately recreates a certain time period with incredible precision and detail. Wrong again. Her idea of recreating an accurate portrayal of that historical time period seems to consist of long lists of known historical figures and patriots, and then imagining some of the meetings, discussions and actions that might have occurred among these people. But here is a hint for the author: Just because you use the name of a real person, it doesn’t make that person ‘real’ as a character in a book. Ho hum. Just more names. The biggest differentiator between one ‘Patriot’ and the next is whether they ‘believe’ in the angels or not. Otherwise, they all blur together.
Just accept the ‘Idea’ that Angels and Demons are real. Okay. Understand that Angels are moderately neutral-neutral-good and that Demons are very bad. But God, who created the Angels decided to punish his angels for being ‘lustful,’ and created the very bad evil demons to do it. Then he just turned the demons loose. Yep, those evil things are his creation too. Just to punish some angels. God doesn’t care about us at all. Angels care about us only slightly. Demons get to kill and abuse us to their heart’s content. To them, we are just background tools to torture and control, and they get to do whatever they want. So, why did God punish a few angels for having sex with humans, by creating some pretty vile, evil demons, and then not restricting the demons in their own sexual urges? They get to have sex with whoever they want, whenever they want. Doesn’t seem very consistent. And there are many other inconsistencies, such as, ‘Why do Angels have wings, if they don’t fly?’
The ‘battle’ between the Demons and the Angels is mostly non-existent, other than a few skirmishes here and there, until we get to a major battle at the end of the book. It seems strange that the demons don’t just destroy the angels, considering that there are only eight angels, but a seemingly endless supply of demons. Strange way for the Demons to fight an Angel/Demon war. In addition, the Angels seem to be not only powerless, but also are unintelligent, mostly uncaring beings.
So, what about the ‘Fantasy’ elements? Pretty weak. The Fantasy is mostly in the idea, not in the actions. Angels and Demons and some religious overtones. That’s about it. Oh, and apparently witchcraft actually exists, though it really isn’t used, and Angels and Demons have a few abilities, but don’t do anything impressive.
So why would you read this book? You wouldn’t read it for the brilliant historical aspects, the amazing military activity, to experience the growth of love and relationships, or for the satisfying ‘wish fulfillment’ – because nothing like that is here. It is true that for some unknown reason, after ‘millennia’ here on earth, including 600 years in their current bodies, these angels are starting to change a bit, and becoming more human. That is bit interesting. But, so what? All of that is still pretty minor. And, we have trouble caring because most of the angels also blur together. Oh, one is a hothead and several are drunks and one loves a human woman and one wants his mommy, and then the archangel is over all of them, but most of the secondary angels still run together so that even late in the book I kept trying to remember which one was which.
You are left wondering, why does this book exist? What is its purpose? Where does it want to go? Does the author have a driving force other than, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if Angels were real, and they came to fight in the Revolutionary War (making not much difference at all)?” I have trouble deciding if the problem is that the Angels don’t do anything very important, or if it just that they are totally uncool except when, once in a while, they glow in different colors and unfurl their magical wings (they don’t fly by the way) and they overawe people by saying, “Hey, we’re angels.”
The author can string words together into sentences, paragraphs and pages. There are a few typos, misspellings and grammatical errors, though that is not as bothersome as some books. But the descriptions won’t knock your socks off, the words are not beautiful to read, and the author relies heavily on exposition rather than good characters and good dialog. Apparently she has never heard of the saying, “Show. Don’t tell.” In addition, the author definitely is NOT a master of POV. Most especially, the author doesn’t make us experience or ‘feel’ anything.
It is no wonder this book was never picked up by a real publisher. Overall, I have to judge it as a failed book. I hope the author comes up with a purpose and a plan next time around. This book is listed as “Angels and Patriots, Book 1,” but I’m not sure that there will be a second or third book, since I’m not sure where it will go. Though maybe that is just because the first book didn’t really go anywhere, to begin with.
I truly felt like I wasted my time with it, and I have never said that before, despite reading many thousands of books. I cannot recommend it.
The angels fight with the Americans and the demons side with the British. There is a parallel subplot about rebelling against authority in that choice.
The scene is Boston, 1775 weeks before the fighting at Concord, Lexington and Menotomy, which set off the Revolution.
The story is briskly told with detailed scene setting and characters that bring that tense city of Boston to life.
The ending battle of Bunker Hill is told with verve, endless action and moments of heroism and sorrow, a fitting conclusion for and release of the ever-building tension of the situation and story.
So, suspend your disbelief and jump into the story. If nothing else the history of the events will stick to you, so deep is Baker’s research, but more, it’s a fun read.
