This story is a window into a period most of us have heard about but none of us have experienced, Prohibition and its excesses. The setting is unusual—North Carolina hill country but that allows another unusual story piece, moonshining. The atmosphere is strong. The main characters, Rufus and Jolene, are sharply drawn. The point of view is Rufus. All characters speak in what the author shows us is hill country dialect. It takes a few pages to get used to, but it rings authentic—complex and often amusing. Driving the tension in the story is a blood feud. The plot is full of surprises including the development of loving relationships and violence. The author is skilled in the construction of the storyline and the depictions of the characters. I loved the use of imaginative metaphors and similes. Well done indeed!

This story takes place in North Carolina from the early 1900's into the late 1930's especially through the prohibition era. It follows Rufus who leaves a home where there are some that he will not be missed and he wants to be able to put food in his belly. He runs into a child of the O'Hara family looking play tricks on passersby. It is fortunate for Rufus as is able to get some additional food and a place to sleep. But he also finds himself in the middle of a family feud between the O'Hara's and the Harvey's. He also finds himself in the middle of a new profession when the 15 year-old matriarch of the O'Hara's Jolene decides to start making Moonshine to make more money for the family. This is an interesting read as it progress while you follow Rufus who progresses as moonshine runner and his attraction to Jolene. The author tells you in the beginning that this written in the voice of Rufus and what would have been his speech or vocabulary of the time and this at times makes the book a challenge to read. The only other issue I have is in my opinion there are two instances in the book that could have been left out and still got the story across. One was a time when Rufus walked into the barn and the other was when Rufus was serving time. Overall this was a good read.

I enjoyed this book so much! And I don't usually like dialect, but in this case it was so easy and un-obtrusive. In fact, it often reminded me of hearing my grandmother's voice (no, she wasn't from Tennessee, but she did say things like "Tis, tat, and t'other"). Well-drawn characters, consistent POV, full of action and surprises in a downhome setting that was exotic to me.

Whiskey and Old Stogies was a very enjoyable book. What really made the book for me was the characters. All characters were well written and sound like it very much relate to from my years living in the south.

There were some times when the story didn’t flow well and I had to look back to see where we were in the story. This is just a minor flaw but probably kept it from getting five stars.

It was incredible and less the people who would take to pass on their moonshine and the author made that very clear.

Again, I enjoyed the book and recommend it for anyone.

An entertaining book from a hard time. The author had a note hoping the reader did not have problems with the story being told in the main characters method of speech. The colloquialism is not a problem. Adds a lot of character and keeps you in the characters head. I enjoyed that.

Did not really care for the ending. I don't require a whiz bang at the end but this one sort of leaves you wondering what was the point of the story. It just petered out.

Lisa Angle's Whiskey and Old Stogies puts you solidly in the past with on point dialogue, descriptions, and quirky characters in a realistic story of moonshiners that jumps up off the page and comes to life in the reader's mind.

If you are looking for an easy read and an engaging escape into a carefully crafted world of past life and times, this one's for you.

What I really enjoyed about this book was the feel of the time and place: North Carolina, 1920's through 1930's. The author really captured the speaking style and the backwoods thinking of these family clans. The storyline was engaging. And she did a good job of weaving a tale of of a broken family taking in a young boy who struck out on his own, and the running of the Moonshine business. What I didn't like was that there was not a clearcut timeline. You had no idea how much time had passed from one part of the story to another with only vague clues such as the banks failing during the depression, the changing of the president from Hoover to Roosevelt, the onset of WWII and the premier ofthe film The Wizard of Oz. I was also frustrated with the hints of Rufus's abusive background but no follow through. I finished the book but was disappointed that it just ended. No conclusion of the story, it just ended. I am trying to justify the lack of a satisfying ending with "This was the story of Jolene and Rufus and when that relationship ceased, there was nothing more to say." This book had great possibilities, they just weren't lived up to.
