So! I was scrolling through facebook. I'd seen the ads before for "Freelance Familiars", and I was tempted but kinda on the teetering line of "Eh. I'll buy it if the reviews are good".
Well, then I saw an ad for "Emergency Shift" and I fell onto the side of "I need to buy this now!"
I was hooked from the very first line and in LOVE with the world Mr. Potter had built and the characters we were following. It checks all the boxes of urban/modern fantasy that I love and made me happy with my purchase. Potter is a talented writer and deserves to be picked up by anyone who considers themselves a fan of the genre!
The plot is good, following Abby Night as she's saddled with the daughter of Puss in Boots and possibly the Cheshire cat. (That's my theory. Only a guess).
She's tasked with bringing her to "the queen". However, turns out the little girl is in high demand, with several people and creatures coming after her, with deadly consequences.
My favorite character is Cindy, Abby's co-worker and partner. She is a transwoman (closeted to almost everyone but Abby but out by the end of the book proper), so there's a few scenes where she's deadnamed\misgendered, by other characters but it's out of ignorance rather than malice. She's also a human and has no powers, but still kicks a lot of ass and comes in clutch a lot.
There's very clearly a love for all things magic and mystical. While this book focuses on the Fae, there's also a Kitsune that joins the cast and is an ally. (That being said, I felt Rey was the weakest part of the book, as her introduction and the inclusion of memes and modern pop culture references did break my immersion a bit, but the rest of the book was so good I let it pass).
Intense action scenes, with a lot of gore and pure sadism that can only come from fae. But it never feels cheesy or overdone. But I can understand if that's a turn off to someone not expecting it.
And the end of the story reveals that consequences for actions exist, which is always nice.
Overall, this is probably my favorite book of 2021.

I'm giving this 3.5 stars. Once you get past the stylistic choice of writing I'm sure you'll like this story. It's like if Roger rabbit met John dies at the end. I do think this novel would work great as a movie or show.

There were a lot of scenes in this story that did raise my hairs because they were very exciting but I encountered many scenes that I also just kind of tilted my head at. Some of the descriptions were plain bizarre. I felt like some of the character relationships weren't quite authentic. I liked the character of Cindy I thought she was the most relatable.

Oh and it says that reading the prequel to this novel isn't required but for the first seven chapters I was just lost. After chapter 7 things do pick up but that's also when they lean in to the bizarre.

Having a redcap as the main antagonist was a great choice as I do feel like some fae are under appreciated. The redcap was utilized smartly and he was quite bloodthirsty. Compared to some other things I've read this wasn't over the top gore but if any sort of blood isn't your style there are some parts that are quite visually unappealing.

I also liked how Abby is a wolf in a human body and how that's described. Also I never used to think much about male authors writing female characters and focusing on their chests until i read this lol. I used to think it wasn't a real thing. I don't think it was very detrimental to the overall story but every time it came up it was a bit weird.

Overall a fun, interesting read.

I really like this book. I love the concept and the characters. I really love that our lead heroine makes the difficult decisions. She is afraid but she moves you know? Some of my issues with some of the more popular supernatural/paranormal fiction (read:Dresden) that I’ve read is that the characters freeze. Or they make stupid decisions and I don’t know if this is the author trying to make them seem more “human” but no. THIS is what I want to see in a lead character, THIS is what I want to see for a human!! I love how layered this world is and I’m really enjoying getting to know these characters. Our lead heroine isn’t worried about saving the world, she’s worried about the people entrusted to her and she truly makes decisions based on that. It’s amazing. It’s empowering. It’s what I’ve been desperately looking for in a lead character. I was at the point of rolling up my sleeves and figuring out how to write a book myself when I found this one. I am so excited about this series and I am impatiently waiting for the next book. I’m so ready to read more and to explore this world!! Great job Author!!

This is an interesting world that is well crafted. This is not the light world of magic this is fairies dripping with blood and malice. Secret is vey interesting. The story writing is gripping if you enjoy dark urban worlds this is for you.

I quite enjoyed this book and am glad I read the prequel first to explain a bit more about some of the characters and what had happened to them before this one.

Abby Night is a EMT in a world where zombies and fae exist. On a call out to help an injured being, she inadvertently becomes the guardian for a very special and prized, young shapeshifting cat. Secret was just the cutest!

When an evil redcap posing as Santa appears demanding for Secret to be given to him, Abby will do anything to stop her from being taken, but the redcap won't take the rejection lying down! Oh no! He is downright vicious and relentless in his attacks and to make their escape, Secret takes Abby through the Dreamland in order to find help.

The journey through the Dreamland was strange, full of unusual beings, but magical all the same. Eventually they make their way through battle after battle (some gruesome; some freezing cold) and Abby goes through some major transformation on the way!

I loved how Abby's friends all came together for her in several times of need, even Victoria, the goth necromancer from the previous prequel. I'm hoping that Abby is able to grow with her new found powers and responsibilities. I would love to know more about what went on with Jimmy as well other than what he did at the end of time together.

I enjoyed this one enough (despite the few typos and missing words here and there) to buy the next one in this series as well.
