The Gossip of an Earl (The Widows of the Aristocracy Book 1) Kindle Edition

Extra! Extra! Read all about it ...

The Earl of Fennington has a secret identity—that of Mr. Pepperidge, editor of London's premiere gossip rag, The Tattler.

When he meets and falls in love with an earl's daughter, the attraction is mutual, for despite knowing better, Lady Emelia allows him to kiss her behind a hedgerow. Who will know but them?

When the earl asks permission to marry Emelia, her father denies him, requiring him instead to court Emelia for two months. He's only allowed to see her once each week, however. Desperate to spend more time with her, Fennington devises a scheme in which he'll be able to do just that, but in disguise. Emelia will have to meet Mr. Pepperidge in the park once a week to provide him the
on-dit she hears whilst paying calls in Mayfair parlors. That, or he'll print the news of her kiss with Fennington in The Tattler!

In other news, Jane is considering a move to the Continent—a year of mourning after a loveless marriage has left her wanting something more. When her long lost love Andrew appears at Lord Weatherstone's ball and informs her he'll be spending the evening—and hopefully the rest of his life—with her in London, the future is suddenly looking bright. That is, until
The Tattler prints a report of Andrew kissing another woman. Now hurt and angered, Jane sets out to discover the truth while Emelia is about to discover one of her own—all while a new Gossip Goddess shares news of philandering fake aristocrats.

With mistaken identities ruling the reports in The Tattler, is it any wonder the members of the ton love to hate gossip? Or do they really love The Gossip of an Earl? The Tattler knows!

Our Hero must dig out of the debts left by his father and devised a clever way to do it - publish a weekly newspaper called The Tattler devoted to the gossip available about the nobility. And a very successful venture it becomes! He falls in love at first sight with our Heroine but her father drastically limits access to her. So our intrepid hero blackmails her into meeting him in the guise of the Editor of The Tattler. Of course there are complications and that makes the story enjoyable.

Highly recommended!

I liked the story and the characters, but felt confused at times. Like I should have read previous books. There were also quite a few characters to keep up with and the switching of whose point of view was being shared. There was also quite a bit of internal monologue and repetition.

A very good book that keeps you wanting to know what is going to happen next, and what will happen when Lady Emelia finds out what the Earl of Fennington is keeping secret. There is three couples in the story but my favorite is her parents !

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I liked the story outline at first, but then I got so lost in the morass of relationships and cousins and who married who and which son was legitimate etc. that I got very bored and skipped any passage that didn't discuss either of the two main story lines. So I suppose I could have missed it, but WHY are we supposed to care that Lady Jane doesn't want to get married?

Since this was Book 1, I suppose all of these strange minor characters with no discernible plot point are planned for inclusion in other books down the road. But I won't be the one trying to sort them all out, and I wish you good luck in the effort.

There are really two love stories within this book. The main one involves Emelia and Felix, and I enjoyed their courtship. The things left unsaid almost tear them apart, but Max works at keeping them together. The secondary story is an older couple, Jane and Max, who get a second chance at love, and the whirlwind of their relationship was fun to watch. There is a bit of bouncing between story lines, but once I got used to it, the stories flowed.

This story is a selection for Candid Book Reviews, and this is my unsolicited review.

A different spin on a regency book. What happens when an earl needs funds ? Why he starts a gossip newspaper that becomes profitable as well as the talk of the ton. This is a story of such an earl that happens to fall upon first meeting of a young lady falls head over heels in love. He uses blackmail in order to see more of this lady than her father allows. An enjoyable and humorous read.

I'm not a big fan of this time period, but Linda Rae Sande pulls me into her stories. They are a delightful spin on this genre and I particularly love this one. The nuance of the gossiper being played and the ensuing tidal waves that come from this are entertaining and funny. Linda Rae pulls me into this time period again and again with her well-developed characters. Brava!!

I've read most of the author s works, and have enjoyed them.
My one nit to pick; illegal activities ,or inappropriate behaviors are ILLICIT. To ELICIT means to draw something out a response a comment, a compliment for example.
Perhaps spellcheck is to blamew.

Felix meets and falls in love with Emilia. After kissing in a garden at a party, he decides that he wants to marry her. Felix approaches her father for his approval. He agrees. But there are conditions! Desperate to see more of her he blackmails her to meet with his alter ego, the editor of the Tattler. Blackmail plot is discovered by Emilia's mother and she and her friends devise revenge! This book is so entertaining and I loved reading it. Recommended!!!

While this book is Book 1 it references so many books in previous series that it ends up being confusing and annoying and not a good read. It also could do with some basic editing "elicit" is not the same as "illicit" and several other mistakes of the same nature make this an annoying read. To cap it all one of the "heroes" is pretty much a creep with a nasty plot line. Are we supposed to be glad the one of the heroine's ends up with him? This and other plot and character weaknesses leave me unable to recommend this book.
