Linda's
dead sister Elizabeth.

But it can’t be Elizabeth. She's dead.

Right?

Could she still be alive? Or somehow back from the grave?

Or, maybe something even darker is happening … something that threatens Linda's life, as well.

Something that has been buried for years in the secrets and lies of her twisted family history.

Can she discover the truth before it's too late?

"Mirror Image" is a stand-alone, psychological thriller/serial killer mystery. IMPORTANT NOTE: While my other books are clean, this one is not. It contains abuse, violence, language and suicide.

Review

"Linda didn't answer. She picked at the carving. It reminded her of a scar - an old wound that had never been allowed to heal."
Linda lives a fairly mundane life yet hides a difficult and troubled past. After her sister Elizabeth, the icy cold sibling, commits suicide six months ago, the death haunts Linda and fractures familial relationships. Her mother remains trapped in a perpetual daze while her father barely speaks and her own brother Peter accuses Linda of directly causing Elizabeth's death. Linda's endeavors to defend herself and heal are further complicated with the arrival of old high school crush, Steven Anderson, as he begins to investigate a serial killer preying on men.

It is soon clear that Steve wildly suspects Elizabeth is not really dead, laying forth his theory and evidence that point to Elizabeth as the culprit. Crippled by nightmares and horrific hallucinatory visions of the murder victims, Linda questions her sanity while desperately convincing herself her dead sister isn't lying in wait in the shadows. Under increasing pressure and suspicion from Steve, Linda takes matters into her own hands. With the help of her friend, Terri, the search for the killer becomes personal and reveals repressed memories, leading Linda to a shocking truth.

There are moments in Wacek's novel with just enough hints and clues where if you blink or read too quickly, you'll miss them. On the surface, Wacek teases with information and red herrings to throw you off course, but hidden within the layered and complex history of Linda's past lies the answers. Mirror Image, her second novel to date, has all the prime elements you might expect from a psychological thriller: mystery, high tension, family secrets, murder, and an evocative villain whose silver eyes and supernatural-like manipulations personify evil. This well plotted and unsettling tale is reminiscent of Basic Instinct (which Wacek coyly references in her novel) and satisfying for mystery and crime novel readers.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but she does spend much of her time writing stories now. Mystery stories, to be exact. They're clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn't enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes and more, at MPWNovels.com.

Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and still visits regularly, but she herself escaped the cold and now lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.

When she's not writing, she's usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she's an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she's not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)

Definitely a gripping and unexpected psychological thriller with perhaps a touch of paranormal. I didn’t see the end coming but looking back, maybe I should have. Good October read.

Although this was an enjoyable book, it fell a bit shy of its obvious potential. It shows tantalizing glimmers of the author's ability to spin a riveting thriller, but unfortunately, the story gets bogged down with detailed descriptions, especially of Linda's many nightmares, which becomes repetitive, and a tad on the annoying side after a while.

But the story? Great premise! (And promise.) Linda's younger sister Elizabeth, who was, shall we say... manipulative to the max... committed suicide six months prior to the opening of the book... maybe. Maybe not. Her body was never found, and although no one thinks it was possible for anyone to survive that determined walk Elizabeth took straight out into the frigid waters of the Atlantic, doubts are definitely starting to simmer. Now there are some frightening indications that she may be back, and even worse, the seductive Elizabeth... or someone who looks exactly like her... may now be a vicious serial killer. Linda is terrorized by that possibility... but even more, she is terrorized by the possibility that she herself may be the man-killing monster.

Overall, the writing is good, although it could have benefited from some additional editing. There are some unexpected twists, as well as some weirdly inexplicable things, which verge on the supernatural. Some things are hinted at, without being fully explained. But all in all, it is an enjoyable read, with real moments of intrigue. The author has the talent to terrify, and I look forward to her next book.

Three and a half stars, rounded up to four.

This was the last of several books on the series, each a little darker than the last. There was also more description of violence although still on the whole a positive ending that I didn't see coming.

I snagged this book when it was free.
First, I'll start with the problems I had with the story. There was content issues in the beginning of the book; when the two characters are in the deli, and at the end of the book with the main character in referencing the gash on her arm. I noticed spelling errors and missing words in sentences, along with overuse of many words where a thesaurus could have done the trick, throughout the entire story. When I was on a roll reading, those issues pulled me out of the story. There was also a lot of comma splices and not very many connectors so I, as the reader, was forced to read it slow so that I could absorb everything that was happening. Now, that is not necessarily a good thing because the mistakes tend to pop out more.
Second, the story itself. This was an emotional roller coaster, from the main character, Linda, not knowing her place in life and who she was as a person from the abuse she endured in her life. It was a depressing story, but I like ideas such as this one. There was a good amount of mystery, and during the thrill sections I found myself not being able to put it down. I didn't like when, and this is me assuming the author was doing, was trying to throw the reader off the trail, because when Terri and Linda are in the library I didn't like all the bouncing around of what Elizabeth was, it felt as if the writer liked all those myths and legends and wanted to use them, but to me it didn't fit in this story. There was points of Mermaids, Succubuses, etc, that didn't need to be used. Especially, when at the end, Elizabeth and the kind of person she was, was never explained. I felt cheated that it was excused by words of "Linda will never know." For the writer to go on about all these points and never follow it with an explanation makes reading this story a bit aggravating.
Overall, I did enjoy reading this story. The writer did a good job of creating the characters and I was able to feel a connection for each of them in some way. Nicely done. I also felt, apart from the mistakes I found, this was a well written story. Now, would I have bought this if it wasn't free? Yes. The cover and synopsis enticed me enough to download regardless of price. I gave the story three stars mostly because of the grammar mistakes. If there was far less then what I encountered then this story would have gotten four and a half stars.

Wow!!! A paranormal mystery with a touch of romance. Is Elizabeth alive and killing these men? What is happening to Linda? Could she have something to do with these murder? Why do her brothers except one and her father seem to worship Elizabeth and hate Linda? And why does Steve her high school crush have to be the detective assigned to the case? Can Linda forgive Steve for dating her sister? Can they rekindle the attraction they had in high school? This was so different than what I usually read but I really enjoyed it. Loved how the author slowly gave the reader the answers to my questions above. I liked it so much that read her other book The Stolen Twin, really good too.

Although this is part of the Riverview series, this is a stand alone book. This book seriously messed with my head. Sibling rivalry, ghosts from the past and murder make for an amazing story with an ending you can’t predict (even though I thought I did)….I was wrong.

This book fully deserves its rating, with no allowances for being a new writer or for the mass of stuff published on Kindle. The book is well written, the characters interesting and realistic, the dialog is believable and the story is compelling. Michelle PW has arrived! I have to admit I didn't get the final plot twist by which the story reaches its conclusion, but the outcome makes sense so it's not a jarring ending. In another edition (thank goodness for the flexibility of self-publishing), I'd hope for a few more clues in this direction so I could spend the last third of the book with that resolution as a nagging possibility.

I loved the first book in this series when I read it a few years ago, but Mirror Image was pretty boring.
I think the premise could have been cool but there wasn’t enough action/adventure/big events or really ramp up the excitement.

I felt like I was just reading along, instead of becoming invested in the story and characters.

I’d probably skip this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense Psychological Thriller
Reviewed in India on May 13, 2023
If you are a fan of intense thrillers with a touch of super natural shadow you will remain hooked to this book. It's about a dysfunctional abusive family within which Lynda, our protagonist grew. She had lots to complain and fear, the biggest one being her own sister Elizabeth who could control men from a very tender age. However Elizabeth committed suicide so she is dead . But wait !!! Lynda can see her when no one can. Is it all hallucination !!

And then the serial killings of young men. Who could that be?? Looks like Elizabeth only.

It really takes time to solve the mystery and manages to surprise you with the end.

Keeps you engaged in most parts.

A strange family. Not sure if it were a real event it would pan out like it did. However, the pace was fast and the story flowed so I kept reading. It is worth reading through to the end just to confirm to yourself what was going on.

Bello e ai limiti dell'esoterismo, sicuramente leggerò anche il precedente lavoro di questa scrittrice.
