4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 741 ratings

What if everything you know about your family is only half of the truth?

Every small town has its curiosities and conflicts. For Jiggs Woolsey, the most disturbing mystery is the identity of the buried skull he digs up on his Oregon ranch. Warned not to turn it in, he seeks answers about the five generations of his family who’ve previously worked the acres. His father and the cantankerous old-timers of the fizzled-out community of Two Pan will teach him the hard way that they’re not ready to give up their secrets yet.

I was raised in rural Oregon so this book rang true for me. I grew up around people who, at their core, were very much like the characters in this book. The authenticity of the setting and characters is 100% spot on. Both are rich, warm, and endearing. The story is basically a character study and good old fashion homespun narrative. An enjoyable read with a bit of tugging at the heart strings of anyone who has lived long enough to see the effect life has on people. Through Jiggs we see a familiar longing to understand one's place in their family history. This is pioneering family heritage stuff which I found fascinating. To people like me, descendants of homesteading families along the Oregon Trail, it will ring familiar and true. I had many head nodding moments as Jiggs uncovers bits and pieces of his families past while thoughtfully trying to strengthen the connections between his father and his son learning a little from each generation. From the unusual names to the corny western US dialog, this book is as much a slice of our version of Americana as Grapes of Wrath or Cannery Row. If not for its historical importance to the majority of Americans, definitely for its nostalgic, thoughtful, and sensitive look at people from our little corner of paradise.

What a beautifully written book. It isn't something I would generally have chosen, but I'm delighted I did. The first book was free, but I intend to buy the other two in the series because this author deserves the support and I'm so entertained. This is rare for me to do. It's a short book, slow-moving with not one wasted word. If I have one complaint, the dialog is too perfect for these quirky characters who always seem to have the mot juste. That's the thing that isn't realistic - but many books are like that. It's so good, I just decided to trust the writer and enjoy.

I started reading Thai book simply because input was a free download, but it led me to do something I've inky done with two other authors--buy every other book in the series and sit here, waiting anxiously, for any news of upcoming releases! It was seriously that good! It has a great plot, but the short chapters make it an easy book to pace yourself on as well, especially if (like me) your work schedule leaves precious few moments for pleasure-reading and you have to steal them where you can. The characters are rich and dynamic, and there's plenty of quotable lines to allow you to create deep, personal meaning from the storyline. I'm seeking out my own Harriet, by the way...everybody needs a cow like that in their life!

This was an enjoyably strange, quirky read. Not sure how to describe it really. Reasonably well written, but not great yet there was something about that kept saying to me, "1 more page."

I liked the characters - especially the relationships that the story centered around, and the writing had a nice flow. The plot kept my interest over the course of a week or so of evenings before bed - it wasn't something I couldn't put down, but I did look forward to picking it up again. I am adding the sequel to my "pile" of books on my Kindle, as I'm looking forward to getting to know more about the citizens of Two Pan.

I’m giving this five stars despite any grammatical errors and a few extra commas here and there.
I wasn't exactly sure what Mornings in Two Pan would be about, but I had to keep reading to find out about that damn skull. The characters were so real, and the description of Two Pan, Oregon, is beautifully done, making the reader feel "I know these people and this town." If you think the pace of the book is slow, you'll soon understand that it truly reflects the slow pace of Two Pan and its people.
If you want to know what "wry humor" means, this is where you'll find it. In abundance. The dialog is some of the best I've read in a long time, and the personalities of each character shine through.
So, what's the story about? The skull, of course. And people. Jiggs and Ox and Nap and the townsfolk. The relationships aren't easy, and some have called them depressing, but as we learn about the characters, we see why they talk and behave as they do. They’re real. Those who have had a relationship with a parent much like Jiggs and Ox will understand Jiggs’ desire to dig down to the source of Ox’s surliness hoping to find the cause of it. I'm looking forward to reading more about Two Pan.

I think the cover attracted me to this story. That cow. And the cow even has a place in the tale. I read alot. Of late, however, it has been come and go. But this is not a hurry through tale. I found I could jump back into the story after having set it aside for several days when normally I start on a book and I CONQUER it. It is the first of a series of 3... and to be honest I was surprised that I was eager to purchase the other two once I finished this one. It isn't about a destination. It is about the journey, and I found this journey most pleasant. All of the characters come to life, you feel their pain and their pleasure, they grow on you and bring your own family members to mind. Enjoy the journey.

Well told, engaging and charming story of a family struggling to keep three generations together on their ranch in hard scrabble far northeast Oregon. Jiggs attempts to live civilly with his cantankerous elderly father with the help of his surviving son. A mysterious skull, kicked up in a stream on the ranch keeps Jiggs on edge to solve this family puzzle. I enjoyed the challenge Jiggs had in dealing with his headstrong, angry and mean-spirited old father. The story unravels the mystery of father's personality and how it ties into the skull and bones hidden on the ranch. Lot of life lessons and ways to deal with family problems with aging parents. I enjoyed this book and may sample some more of the "Two Pan" series.
