The Painter Mage: Books 1-3 Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 143 ratings

My name is Oliver Morris and I’m a painter mage. I use color and shapes and patterns and infuse them with power. And somehow I'm destined to kill the Druist Mage, if I don't die learning how.

Shifted Agony
After ten years spent facing horrors on the other side of the Threshold mastering forbidden arcane patterns, I want only to rest. I came home, returning to the small town I’d known before my exile, and before my father’s death.

Only, it turns out my father was hiding more secrets than I realized. When another painter from shows up, she unleashes a deadly threat our world hasn't seen in centuries.

Somehow, I'm the only one able to stop it.

Arcane Mark
I nearly sacrificed myself to the hunters, nightmare hell creatures that feed on magical ability, to save my best friend Devan. But to truly keep her safe, I have to convince Taylor to return to Arcanus before she releases anything else on the city.

Then Devan is abducted by a dangerous painter from the other side of the Threshold, one who might be deadlier than anyone I’ve ever faced, and demands that I find a mysterious and powerfully magical item of my father’s. The only problem is I have no idea what he wants.

To save her, I have to master magic beyond my ability, but even that might not be enough. And if I fail, Devan will be forced back across the Threshold where a fate worse than death awaits.

Painter For Hire
When a dead painter is discovered near the local diner, a place that should be protected by patterns placed by my father before his disappearance, I have even less time to prepare for the Druist Mage than I thought.

Then an old friend appears with power he should not possess, putting everyone in the city in even more danger and forcing me to make a choice to protect the city or risk losing Devan, something I can't allow happen again.

This is a bit of a change from the last that I read. However it is good. In this story we’re following Oliver otherwise known as Olli and Deavan also known as Devan. They’ve gotten into a few scrapes that they’ve managed to come through unscathed for the most part. The third book in the series gave a preview to the fourth and I am looking forward to continuing it.

While The Last Star has plenty of plot holes and pacing issues I enjoyed it and appreciated the frustrations the main characters felt as they tried to understand what the aliens were doing. Ultimately we don't know their purpose - Evan believes one thing, Ringer/Marika ends up believing something completely different - but it doesn't matter. Were the book to come true we wouldn't know the answer either and it would not affect the tasks that each of us would have, to rebuild family, community, trust, civilization.

This is a fun fantasy. I am enjoying it a great deal. Well written, but not (to me) as compelling as Any Elizabeth Moon book or the Emily books by Nutgall.

As always, Holmberg creates a very intriguing magic system. The best part of his books are the very well thought out magic systems, and even the most powerful magic users in his books have weaknesses that are exploited. These books are no different! Great read!

I enjoyed this series and will go on and keep reading. It is really a different type of Urban Fantasy with a interesting magical system. It is somewhat flawed with the Protagonist being a pessimist, not having the skill he needs but never dong much about it. As his girl Friday says he is an Idiot( all too frequently). It has some good side characters that both aide and hinder him as he fights as the underdog.

The Painter Mage is a fun read probably for young adults. Has some different creatures, animals who try to get the power from shifter people who try to protect an area of great power that had been protected by a Painter Mage of great power, the father of the hero. Different people try to help and find the clues in diaries and sculptures.

I felt this series was unrealistic. The first story was good and the whole series has some very creative concepts, but the story has some major flaws I have trouble getting past. For one thing the whole thing seems to take place in the span of a few weeks. The main character Oliver is always exhausted and at the end of what he can give, but yet manages to pull off one more act to save the day, even when he is not fully recovered from yesterday's amazing feats.
Deven, constantly says Oliver is an idiot. I'm sure it was meant as part of the playful relationship between the two characters, but it gets old fast. Then there is all these secrets. Deven keeps secrets from Oliver. Taylor keeps secrets from everyone. Jakes and Oliver have secrets, even once they have worked together to save the world, they still will not be honest with each other and keep secrets. I don't like stories where everyone is keeping secrets and letting us the audience know there are secrets.
Then after the second book I began to wonder how does Oliver earn a living. Sure the house may be his dad's, but he goes out and buys food, with what a huge inheritance? It's interesting how little details like that make a book so much better. You don't' need make a whole chapter, so maybe I did miss it somewhere in the story.
I can be wrong but it also felt like there was the creation of unknown magic whenever they needed it. Just one more trick in Oliver or Deven's bag. Or who ever needed one. There seem to be no laws or rules to what they could do. Sure it was tough for Oliver to pull of his new trick, but in the end he managed. Everyone else seemed to have no problems doing their magic.
After reading the first three books I have no desire to read the next one.

It is okay but not in my interest. Sorry but it makes it difficult to write a review as I only read a few chapters.

How can you go wrong: three books for 99 pence. D K Holmberg is one of my favourite authors for this genre. Having read most of his other creations this bundled trilogy continues his winning formula to provide books you can't put down. The Painter Mage books are full of energy, good characters and plenty of excitement. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Jim Butcher Fans

I really enjoyed this series. Urban fantasy with a different twist on how magic is used.
It's quite a dark story with blood and guts aplenty, and not too much of the light hearted quipping found in similar books. The love interest (although a major reason for the storyline) is quite subdued thank goodness.
It would be 5 stars except you notice - reading the books back to back - a certain amount of repetition and the author does tend to dish out information to our hero on a sort of "need to know" basis i.e. the main character is given many clues along the way from apparently more well informed associates but they never seem to give him the whole picture. These are minor quibbles however and overall the books are well written and a fantastic bargain for 99 pence.
