About the author

I live in the South where the heat and humidity have driven us all slightly mad. I'm easy to spot as I'm the palest person around. I avoid the sun and love air conditioned comfort. On the plus side, my skin will never look like badly laid roofing shingles.
My favorite writing genres are fantasy, romance, and science fiction, but I'll read just about anything except technical instruction manuals. All my stories have humor and a touch of sass. In my spare time I enjoy phoning in Bigfoot sightings to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. They are heartily sick of hearing from me.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016I've been a fan of this author for awhile, and happily grab everything she writes. "Rimrider" is her best effort yet! I blew through it because I couldn't put it down. I've mentioned before that her books aren't cookie cutter versions of one another, but they do have a unique flavor that always catches my interest.
The characters are interesting, for sure - though my favorite is Gem, I think (you'll have to read the book to find out who that is!) - and Kelley's world building is good. With descriptions that form a clear picture in my mind's eye of both the background and the action, it was easy to slip into this world and tag along for the exciting ride.
The humor added makes it even more fun! I already purchased the sequel, which I'm very glad is already published! If I didn't have responsibilities that I can't ignore, I expect this day would be spent in reading just as yesterday was!.
My favorite author is Andre Norton. I've realized that Kelley has aspects of her writing that remind me of Norton, which thrills me! As long as she continues writing, I'll likely be one of those reading each book right away.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2018The cover looks a little scary, like she's in a trance or something, but it's just the opposite. Unlike most citizens of Earth in the distant future, Jane Benedict appreciates her independence. She likes thinking for herself and making her own decisions, something she gets an abundance of opportunities to do after a startling twist forces her and her younger brother to escape Earth.
How do you escape an entire planet? Yep, you take a spaceship to somewhere else. Along the way, Jane proves herself as kind, courageous, and conscientious. She becomes a part of the crew, part of the fighting force that's bucking the established system because it's corrupt, self-serving, and wholly motivated by greed.
Among the terrible things Jane must face are the deaths of others, risking her own life (repeatedly), nearly getting raped (some fighting but she's rescued before it gets more than suggestive), and an overwhelming responsibility.
The story line smoothly incorporates each new twist and turn, deftly creating a well-developed world, a detail-rich experience with characters I found very compelling. As a disclaimer, I wouldn't recommend this for readers under 14, but that's a personal decision and based largely on the fact that I feel a tremendous responsibility in regards to the younger readers whom I know.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2017Yes, for everyone who has been searching for really good science ficton, this book Rimrider, is that death of fresh air. Much better than the standard space opera, this book, in a parallel dimension might have been written by Ann McCaffery or Todd Johnson. I just love this book, and I am sure all sci fy readers of all ages will also love it.
When Jane and her brother face the sudden and mysterious back to back deaths of both of their parents, and their employer, the United Earth Corp or UEC, attempts to take over their lives and their parents possessions, Jane and Ben escape to the Rim on a Freetrader space ship and gradually learn what the UEC has been doing on Planet Golgotha, and why their parents were murdered.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2019I had no expectations when I got this book. I'd never heard of the author and, for some reason stopped reading sci-fi years ago. I got it because it was on offer (free). I was curious about the quality of books by Indie authors, as I hope to soon join their ranks.
I was pleasantly surprised. So pleasantly surprised that I devoured it and went on to buy the second in the series (with real money!)
The first couple of pages gave me a few doubts - too much telling when the author should have been showing - with a couple of back story 'info dumps'. But I can see why he did it and it wasn't too much. The rest of the book I liked very much. I cared about the characters, more importantly I believed in them. I like the world he created. Sure this sort of thing has been done before (I do watch a lot of sci-fi movies even if I don't necessarily read it). But I liked his take on it. It felt familiar and 'possible'. I'm enjoying book 2. And lastly, I love the character Gem.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024I just sailed thru this. I liked the adventure the children took. Then the really evil bad guys, no ambiguity but believable. And Gem! Love Gem. She is getting even more interesting in the snake peak. Heartily recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little story
Tightly written. Interesting. With some great surprises. For 5 stars I would have enjoyed seeing more if her flaws getting her into trouble. She was the steady one so growth of her character was less clear. Though I apprexiated her independence and strength as a character. Sweet little romance tastefully sprinkled in too. A very enjoyable read. So much so that I also read intro chapters to 2nd book.
