Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 361 ratings

"They say there are two sides to every story. My father says there are three sides: yours, mine, and the truth.

I think it's both simpler and more complicated than that. I think there are the stories that get told and the ones that don't. And the stories that get told are the ones that become the truth, no matter what the facts might be."

The first time Raya Trinklus hears the story of a goblin who could spin straw into gold and once tried to steal the queen's child, she believes it's only that - an impossible story.

And certainly, it's a story that has nothing to do with her.

But when all the girls in the kingdom are called to the fabled city of Auria to celebrate the prince's coming of age, Raya finds herself drawn into a web of royal secrets and an unlikely friendship with a young man who knows more than he's telling.

Soon, she's forced to confront the secrets of her own past so she can fight for her future.

Breeana Puttroff has loved making up stories since she could talk. For many years, her biggest audience for those stories was the fantastic students she had the privilege of teaching.

One summer afternoon, while she was picnicking in the beautiful mountains of her Colorado home with her little girl, she saw an old, broken stone bridge, and she just knew there was a story inside. Six months later, the Dusk Gate Chronicles was born.

These days, she runs a small business and writes from home while planning math lessons, digging caterpillars out of garbage disposals (oops!), discovering how to make new colors out of crayons melted in the dryer, and drinking lots of coffee (and occasionally tea).

She loves it when readers connect with her on Facebook or Twitter, especially if they have new recipes for disastrously good times with kids.

Breeana holds a B.A. in English from the University of Northern Colorado, and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Literacy from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.

I was given a partial beta version of this book.

I remember the first time I read the opening two paragraphs of this story. I thought it was one of the most honest and true statements about life I'd ever read. I couldn't wait for the rest of the story and was only slightly disappointed when I finally got to the end.

This story takes the idea of a well-known fairy tale and gives it all the twists and drama that anyone who's read the Dust Gate Chronicles has come to expect.

Raya is a typical teenager on the brink of becoming an adult, sheltered by an overprotective father in typical teenage fashion she thinks she's grown and knows what's in her best interests. Finding out that everyone she loves and trust is keeping secrets from her was I think just as aggravating for me as a reader as it was for her, I just wanted to reach in and start shaking some sense into the people around her. However sometimes there are really good reasons for keeping secrets and soon Raya comes to realize that.

I don't want to give away any spoilers so I won't go any further into the story. Why was I disappointed at the end? Certainly not because of the quality of the writing or the story that was told, but there was one truly selfish character still alive at the end that I was praying would get what was coming to them......Maybe we'll get a sequel and they'll fall off a tower and drown in the moat.

I read this 346 page book in one day because it was so good. It's well written but there are quite a few typos of the missing word variety. Not enough to make the book unreadable, but enough to be distracting. Having said that, this was a wonderfully, unexpected jewel of a story.

The characters are well developed and very likeable with the exception of the ones who aren't supposed to be. Most notably the spoiled rich girl who always gets whatever she wants and looks down on everyone "below" her and the evil king who wants to conquer the world. This not the story of Rumpelstiltskin as we all know it. It is the story of Raya Trinklus, a "basket baby" who was adopted and raised by Miles Trinklus in a small village called Graineyville. It's the story of three girls who go to the capital to meet the prince when all girls in the kingdom between the ages of 16 and 18 are commanded to come for a ball. Raya has always wanted to go to the capital but her father hates it so he's always told her no. Now there is no choice. This is a story of intrigue, secrets and a rebellion army. And it's a very fun read that had me turning pages until it was done.

I couldn't wait to start this book once she started posting about it online. I have all of her other books(Dusk Gate Chronicles) which are just amazing and must reads so I knew this would be one as well. It was a stand alone that closes everything up at the end, but of course with all of Breeana's books left you wanting her to write more. I wouldn't have minded if she made this into a series as well. I feel like we would follow her right back to see what happens to them next, because this was a new twist on a story more of us have heard from when we were young. I do hope she finds time to take us back to visit. Keep up the good work lady :)

This book was ok, however not nearly as enjoyable as the Dusk Gate Chronicles, by the same author. This story was rather strange and none of it ever totally sorted itself out. It talked of facts and truths and stories and lies, all of which wove a rather confusing tale. The main character, Raya, was a self-centered, self-serving young woman you just wanted to slap some sense into, and I don't really think that is what the author intended. In many ways, she was as irritating as her protagonist, Mila. The other people in the story had far more character, but none of them were ever fully developed.
It was an interesting concept, but it just didn't come together well. Lots of things happening with no real background or follow through. Many things left hanging or unresolved.
This ebook also contained more than the usual number of typos and grammatical errors common to most ebooks. That I lay at the feet of whoever edited the print to ebook manuscript. (Not that my grammar is much better! But at least my iffy grammar is free!)
Disappointing would sum it up. The Dusk Gate Chronicles were outstanding, captivating. I expected more of the same and it just wasn't there.

If you've read the Dusk Gate Chronicles (also by Breeana Puttroff), you may get a feeling of déjà vu while reading Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter: Raya, like Quinn, is a female protagonist who can be very stubborn as she realizes the secrets that are being kept in an effort to protect her, and as she manages, with her stubbornness, to foil certain attempts to keep her away from danger.

This is an interesting take on a fairy tale retelling, since the story takes place years after the events in the fairy tale. A number of other themes are introduced before we even read anything relating to what we might remember of Rumpelstiltskin. Additionally, we don't see magical abilities, which is almost always a part of a fairy tale retelling. Rather than inventing the magic that would allow Rumpelstiltskin's story to have occurred, Breeana instead imagined what events could--years later--develop into a legend like Rumpelstiltskin. This plays into the theme of what truth is.

The writing style is captivating, and the plotline is consistent.
