Murphy’s Luck (Murphy’s Luck Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,459 ratings

Sometimes, rotten luck is better than no luck at all.

Jinxed from birth with mystifying bad luck, Murphy Drummer hasn’t ventured beyond the safety of his backyard since he was a little boy. To remedy his loneliness, he became the master of a thousand hobbies and as amazing as his crazy luck.

When events demand the search for a new, luck-free sanctuary to spare the world from his puzzling disorder, Murphy’s relentless whammy plows an uproarious path of mayhem and miracles to Joy Daley—an incurable optimist who never forgot to thank her lucky stars. The comical, topsy-turvy effects from the collision of Lady Luck and Murphy’s jinx whimsically upend the lives of everyone in their orbit.

At first, Murphy’s victims question who he is—at last, they’ll be questioning who they aren’t.

If you like a fresh, feel-good story with loads of laughs and a dollop of mystery on top, then you’ll love Murphy’s Luck.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Benjamin Laskin is a splendid storyteller with a flair for the dramatic and a talent for characterization."
--THE MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW, James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief,

"If you're looking for a whimsical, upbeat read that will make you smile, "Murphy's Luck" is a great choice."
--UNDERGROUND BOOK REVIEWS, Lynne Hinkey

"Hilarious...like fate is a train wreck of epic proportions, and as a reader you can't wait to see what insanity comes next. I recommend this book for a quick and easy read with a satisfying ending wherein the ends are all neatly tied up in a complicated knot of reality."
--SEATTLE BOOK REVIEW, Rebecca Demarest

"What makes Murphy's Luck work best is the tenderness Laskin has for each one of his characters. You'll feel for Murphy because Laskin is so adept at characterization, but you'll be comforted by his antics, even when things are going wrong. There's also a good message about creating your own luck. Murphy might be called "Drummer the Bummer" but this book is far from it: a heartwarming, joyful and entertaining read."
--SPR REVIEWS, Lysa Grant

MURPHY'S LUCK
BENJAMIN LASKIN

Review by Author Roy Murry

"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." Murphy's Law does not apply to Murphy's Luck. Everything around Murphy is a disaster; at age eight, he is confined to his home because of circumstances beyond his control.

In his twenty-six years of confinement, Murphy's life takes a dramatic turn. Thanks to the internet, he becomes famous, wealthy, and productive.

But no one has seen him. Yet, his unpopularity in the community forces him to leave his hometown, embarking on a journey that leads him to a monastery.

En route, a bus catastrophe happens, and Murphy heads for the beach for comfort and separation from people. He meets a young woman, saves her life from two calamities, and becomes attached because of her persistence.

Murphy's journey is a whirlwind of confusion and excitement, involving his new friend Joy, Joy's boyfriend, Detective Brock, and many other characters. It is a cluster of crazy events that could only happen with Murphy's uncanny involvement.

The reader will be thankful for the adventure when all is said and done. The reading is one sitting, enjoyable, and fast-paced fun time.

Intriguing plot, identifiable characters with moderated angst and poignancy and plenty of humor! It is a well written story that flows throughout. Engaging but not all consuming. While not my usual fare, I enjoyed it very much and will be looking for sequels.

I don’t read a lot of Literary or Speculative Fiction, however this was fun. It included just enough fantasy to keep me interested and the wordplay was entertaining. Poor Murphy feels like he is cursed and he has separated himself from society as much as possible for what he perceives as the greater good for all concerned. He has built his own sanctuary in and around his house. He fills his time learning new hobbies and writing about them in his syndicated newspaper articles. He also corresponds with his readers. When his devoted grandfather, who raised him from infancy, passes away he sees no other choice than to quit his job and move to an even more secluded environment. Of course he doesn’t make it very far before disasters start happening around him again.

The sequence of events and characters introduced into the storyline are unique but not out of the ordinary. They are all much more realistic than any of Murphy’s neighbors were in his old neighborhood. (They were all a lot of miserable people looking to place blame on anyone besides themselves for their misfortunes.) When Joy Daley, a journalist, encounters Murphy, she is intrigued and puzzled by what she sees happening around him. Joy is unlike anyone Murphy has ever met and he isn’t quite sure what to make of her. However, he finally accepts her kindness, and Joy is able to slowly bring a fresh perspective into Murphy’s life.

I loved Joy and Murphy's journey as much as I relished the well-developed secondary characters of Brock Parker, Joy’s straight-laced police detective fiancé, and the misty-eyed tarot card reader Freya who states, “The Universe works in mysterious ways…” as Brock’s world is turned upside down. I found this a relatively quick, light read with skillful levity in all the right places.

FYI: A small amount of adult language, hardly worth mentioning. **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** March 25, 2016

Format/Typo Issues: I found this well edited.

And with a very happy ending. A hard beginning for Murphy and some tough times along the way, but there’s love and understanding and support and all is well in the end. Fun characters and crazy experiences. I recommend it - it’s a good story. I’ll most likely re-read it, and look forward to the next book.

This was an enjoyable read but a true story of fantasy. Not always my type but it was a fun read.

This book was fun to read. At first, I thought it was strange and a bit on the silly side, especially the constant play on words and the frequency of coincidences, which can be called synchronicities, but the flow was good and the story made me want to read on.

Almost all of the characters were quirky, some to the nth degree, but their quirkiness made the story entertaining. The language is direct and the storytelling to the point without any florid descriptions and excess exposition, which is a delight.

I read this book in one sitting, in a waiting room, and at the end, I felt quite happy and entertained.

I have been reading what I call fluff books ever since the beginning of the pandemic last year. These were stories I could get free that would be quick reads and then I could go on to the next one without thinking too hard about any thing. I began reading Murphy's Luck not knowing what it was about and immediately got sucked into the story. It seemed mystical, magical, and had a realism to it in its preposterous storyline. But, it haunted me and I wanted to read more. I started rooting for Murphy and didn't know why. He was quiet and unassuming. He wasn't your typical hero and yet I wanted him to succeed. The story moved at a quick pace and never disappointed me. There were stories in the story that made me wonder how they fit into the outcome... I needn't worry about how they fit as they all did. There was also humor written in this which left me feeling good throughout. I enjoyed my "fluff story"which turned out to be a humorous story of life and love!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick read, kind of fatalistic
Reviewed in Italy on July 5, 2019
This begins at the end, then takes the reader through everything it took to arrive at this conclusion.
Rather shallow character development, but allowing the reader to fill on the missing parts easily, probably counting on the reader's knowledge of certain character types.
Proposes an almost credible X-Files type of situation, and then creates a story around it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murphy grows on you ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2018
Initially you’re not sure where the story is going when first you read about the young Murphy as a child living in isolation, and you wonder why that is. Reading on further and as Murphy grows into a young man it dawns on you that this is no ordinary story and that Murphy’s luck, such as it is, affects everyone around him unfortunately, in a negative way. But that said, Murphy is no ordinary character. Now he has to face the outside world and he has quirks and habits that are unusual and you wonder how he will manage. For all that, it’s a very entertaining read since your initial sorrow for Murphy turns into joy, and you’re really rooting for him in his quest to live a normal life.

This was very enjoyable and the proverbial page-turner, well written and compelling. I might complain that it was too short until I realise there’s a Book 2 and so to my relief the story continues and I can’t wait to download the next instalment.
