From the Author

Devil Dealing, the first book in The Ryder Quartet, builds on front-line research in the war against crime in Durban, South Africa. With assistance and guidance from detectives, forensics experts, and victims of crime, the author attempts to ensure meticulous attention to detail. He has explored the precise locations in which scenes are set, and has captured details of actual crimes before adapting them for his purposes into fast-paced fiction thrillers. Throughout the quartet of novels his intention has been to create exciting crime stories steeped in authenticity of action, place and time. At the same time, he has endeavoured to capture the essence of some current debates on law, justice, crime and moral responsibility.

After working as an actor, director and teacher in theatre, film and television, followed by a long academic career, Ian is now a full-time writer. His background plays a modest part in his writing, he says. 'My fiction is based to the best of my ability on research and field work. I have to believe the words my fictive characters speak, and the actions they undertake.' Which explains why he has accompanied detectives to the front line, interviewed victims of crime and forensics investigators, taken courses on forensics, crime scene management, and DNA analysis, and spent many hours scouring actual locations for his crime scenes: many of them based on actual events. 'I endeavour to make my fiction plausible and authentic. I can only hope that readers will also enjoy the journey of discovering my characters and their foibles, their actions and their experiences. I hope, too, that they will inform me about and forgive me for any lapses in my work or any errors of detail.'

When I finished the Stieg Larsson series "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" I felt like I knew not just a few new characters but a whole new world. And I immediately missed them. The American and Swedish film adaptations, including the mini-series, were great, but I still missed the original thrill ride of a few well-crafted characters in a world I've never visited: Sweden. Always on the lookout for a good crime thriller, I came across "Devil Dealing" by Ian Patrick here on Amazon and noticed it was the first of a quartet of novels. Intrigued, I read a few of the reviews, and learned from one (thank you, Mr. Etski) that the world of these narratives is modern day South Africa. I thought, could this be another "Girl With..." series?... and plunged in. Ah, how grand it felt to be in the hands of a good foreign story teller again! I've just finished the first of Ian Patrick's quartet of novels, and I can recommend -- with only a slight qualification -- that my fellow fiction lovers take the plunge. Mr. Patrick waxes a bit long, at intervals, on unnecessary detail, but he takes the reader on a helluva ride (including one breathtaking twist I shall not divulge) through the gritty world of South African law enforcement, with the intricate texture of South African society -- Afrikaans and English, Colored and Black -- wrought clean and sharp and satisfying. It's a glorious mash-up of a narrative. That Mr. Patrick promises three sequels gives me confidence he will only sharpen his eye and pen. One more thought, perhaps pertinent to any skeptics... I put down my e-reader halfway through Patrick's novel because, well, life got a little messy -- the sudden demise of my computer and cars (yes, plural) occurring within a 24-hour period. That over the course of two weeks of endless but necessary shopping at electronics outlets and car lots (even a visit to a backwoods hermit -- a character right out of fiction with a VW bug for sale, or not, as he seemed to change his mind and offered it on loan until I found what I was looking for)... that I found myself, day after tedious day of this hateful business, itching to get back to "Devil Dealing" says it all, and I'm champing at the bit for more. Well done, Mr. Patrick! Well done!

In this book #1 of 4, we are on a case of murder, drugs, and dirty law enforcements. We meet Ryder and the officers he works with on a dangerous assignment to catch a murderer known as Satan. Ian Patrick is a writer that is committed to study, then write detailed actions involved in the work to catch the offenders. He does this and keeps up the interest.

They say you can't tell a book by its cover - maybe - but sometimes you can pick up a certain vibe. I took a chance on this one and...Oh man! I feel like I found a gold coin while walking along the beach. Couldn't sleep, couldn't put it down - or turn it off as I should say in this golden age of gadgets. It blew me away. This is why those of us who love reading read. What an adventure. Villains? Villains of the rankest stripe. Will no one bring them to justice? A supporting cast of scary creeps. Where are the good guys? Right here. Tough guys. Hero cops. Not afraid to mix it up with dangerous thugs. Witty, well versed in forensics, skilled in the martial arts, these detectives can deliver a beating and damning evidence with equal flair. Drugs, bullets, bizarre weapons...I found myself casting the movie while I read. Denzel! Where are you? Or do I mean Mr.Diesel? Liam Neeson anyone?
But this is no fantasy. This is a glimpse into a sordid world as real as today's headlines. I'm onto something here. I have uncovered a gem. A knockout thriller. You must read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who is Ian Patrick?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 3, 2016
Crime fiction aficionados are asking who Ian Patrick really is. Surely he must be a former (or current?) member of the SAPS to be able to write such vividly realistic tales of violent crime in Durban? He brings to life a world peopled with vicious villains and colourful cops. The descriptions of combat action, armed and unarmed, are too authentic for the author not to have been involved himself in similar fights. His knowledge of forensics and police procedure is encyclopaedic. His dialogue, both the street language of the criminals and the often humorous interplay between the police, is spot on. And the sense of place puts the reader right there in the action. Think a South African Elmore Leonard.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new author who is clearly hugely talented and destined for great things
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2015
So often an author only has one book in them, but not here. Having read the first three of the Ryder quartet, what is really exciting is that each book is better than the last. None of the books are your average police procedural, the plot is direct, in-your-face, full-colour action all the way with murder frequent and almost incidental (life is cheap and I suspect that this is simply how it is in South Africa, murder capital of the world).

The pace stalls on a couple of occasions when the author pauses to familiarise us with South African social trends and developments in policing. This is really unnecessary as we can easily pick it up as we are being swept along by the action. The background details and forensic facts are exceptionally well researched and authentic without being nit-picking in the detail.

The characters are great but, apart from the principal detectives, the police team do not fully develop in the first book, it’s the villains who stand out, especially Skhura Thabethe, described in the synopsis as “a sinister and violent gangster dealing in drugs and murder” but that does not do him justice - he is so vividly and completely evil that he is becomes the star of the show.

How lucky I was to stumble across Ian Patrick, a new author who is clearly hugely talented and destined for great things.

3.0 out of 5 stars maybe some more about the environment would be useful i. e
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 19, 2015
Just finished reading this first book by Ian Patrick about a detective in Durban South Africa. Set against the backdrop of police corruption, the story ultimately leads to the revelation of a corrupt officer. Running alongside this is the character Thabethe a criminal ex police officer, who provides a sense of menace and will no doubt develop as a dangerous adversary in the series . The author tries to bring the reader to the locality through the use of local slang expressions. Whilst this added colourful language to the read, maybe some more about the environment would be useful i.e. what is Durban like to be in?? The pace of the story sped up as the end game was approaching and less was made of overly detailed descriptions of objects that interrupted the flow earlier on in the book. I did get the impression through some of the instances of repeated and somewhat laboured dialogue, that the author was presenting some characters as slow witted, however at times this approach was unnecessary and I found myself skimming over these sections. I am anticipating that in the rest of the series the characters develop and become more three dimensional. This first book in the Ryder series offers readers looking for a crime story set in an unusual location a good read.

A superb first novel from Ian Patrick, with a wonderful insight on how corruption can take place in a police force. Ian Patrick has researched his subject well, including the area where the story unfolds. I look forwarded to reading his next novel and seeing how the characters develop.. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a good fast moving, page turning thriller.
