4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,496 ratings

Would you risk it all to soar with dragons?

Hector Park, a combat-hardened veteran conscripted into the turmoil of the Third World War, now fights a war more personal and insidious — the battle against an unforgiving virus threatening to obliterate humankind. He has three days to live.

When all hope seems lost, a lifeline emerges from the darkness: Hector's estranged brother offers him a chance to transcend mortality itself with a one-way trip into the revolutionary virtual reality of Archemi.

Hector embraces the experimental digital transformation and chooses the difficult path of the Dragon Knight. But Hector isn't the only one with dreams of taking to Archemi's skies. Vicious, ambitious fellow players, corrupt knights and ancient gods make Archemi a battlefield just as dangerous as the war Hector left behind. But if he succeeds? He will earn the trust of a dragon hatchling and forge an impenetrable psychic bond with her, a connection deeper than any human relationship.

LitRPG novels combine the structure and satisfaction of role-playing games with sci-fi and fantasy elements, seamlessly weaving game elements with story. If you love Dungeons and Dragons, Final Fantasy, and-or the Dragonriders of Pern, then this series will grip you and not let go. Join Hector on this Epic JRPG-inspired LitRPG journey, where the skies beckon and mankind's survival hangs in the balance.

The beginning portion of this story, the real world stuff, is a bit slow. I’d suggest skipping it and jumping right to the 12% mark. Just know that the main character (MC), Hector, has disease that is killing him. He and others like him are uploaded into a full immersion game that’s still technically in Beta. Everything else about the real world story is touched on in the rest of the story.

Now, the rest of the novel is quiet good. Like surprisingly good. From the cover, I was expecting another high fantasy, barely LitRPG story, that depended on dragons to make it interesting. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Not only is this a crunchy LitRPG story, it’s one that has a surprising amount of depth to the game system and the world building.

After character creation the story drops the MC on a magically powered airship as a slave who has to figure out someway to escape. That’s right, a magic powered airship. This novel incorporates magictech. There are hints that there’s a whole magictech civilizations but you don’t get to see them in this novel. Still, that alone told me that this novel wouldn’t be the same old fantasy story.

On the game side, there are lots and lots of notifications, ability descriptions, character sheets, damage notifications, and more. The number of skill and ability choices is varied for the MC and there’s more than enough info to roll your own character in this world. In the first half of the story, there’s even an important survival game aspect that I thought was well done. In addition to that crafting plays a very important part of the story since there are no healer classes.

Not only is there depth to the game system though. More surprising is the depth to the world building. The author describes distinct cultures with their own histories, influences, and biases. Each has distinctive dress, traditions, and even hairstyles. I was truly surprised at how fleshed out the game world felt.

Some of that depth diminishes as the story enters the 2nd arc after the 50% mark. But it just shifts to a smaller story that is a bit more military and focuses on the objective of the MC becoming a dragon rider. However, even in this half, there are plenty of surprises and interesting twists.

Overall, I had a very good time reading the story and look forward to seeing where it goes in the next book.

I'm just getting around to writing this review, a year late. Better late than never, and now that the author is at book 3, I felt compelled to chime in.

At this point, there are plenty of spoilers, and I'm going to write the same review for books 1 and 2, because... like I said, we're up to book 3 now!

This books starts out like Yet Another LitRPG book, with our MC permanently transferred to a virtual world. Yeah, been there, done that. But wait, there's... dragons! Okay, right, done that, too. The MC is an odd character, with some odd abilities. Right, right, is there anything that HASN'T been done before?

I'm glad you asked, because yes. Yes, there is. But I have to warn you: you'll probably enjoy the fist book just fine if you're into the LitRPG genre, and the writing is good enough to keep things moving along. In fact, the writer takes the time to really build out his world, and MORE importantly, builds his characters into "real" characters.

I liked the first two books well enough, but probably wouldn't have bothered to leave a review for them, without the arrival of book 3. At that point, things had developed -- I will say again that the *characters* have developed to the point where I felt the series deserved the praise.

Good stuff, and I hope to see book 4 in the not-too-distant future!

I was unfamiliar with Mr. Baldwin's work prior to this, but this book did a great job of hooking my interest. It's slower than the latter books - as is expected - but the pacing is by no means poor. At every turn, Hector is forced to be decisive, which is especially relevant given the amnesia that accompanies his deaths. Along the way, he finds friends, such as Rutha, an intelligent and accomplished diplomat who aids him on his quest to become LORD OF THE DRAGONS (not quite, but close enough).

The book has a plenitude of action, tactics, interesting (and well-implemented) game elements, and cool characters. Try it!

Addendum: This is much shorter than most reviews I write, but it's been two years since I've read it - closer to 2.5 years, really - and I wanted to correct that ASAP, since I know how 'Zon's algorithm smites authors.

I liked the story a lot! Not always a fan of the military and real world references, but in general I like the complex political landscape and the direction of the story!

Stumbled on this series and it sucked me in over the weekend... literally... and am on book 3 and it's Monday. (Feeling a cold coming on...) Love the snarky character interactions. Really like the characters. The point of view stays with the main character... which I like in this instance. You could easily write another series of books... each from the point of view of the other characters over the same timeline. Not as hardcore RPG as other books... not quite as much focus on the mechanics. I think it's a good balance, IMHO.

This was an excellent story, I got so hooked on it. I haven't done RPGs for 30 years but really enjoyed feeling like the main character had some control over his future. The action was great and I look forward to reading the next books in the series.

I hadn't read a LitRPG story in a while so I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I needn't have worried though as the author's style of writing, description of the characters and the well thought out narrative soon had me glued to the book.
You can identify very easily with all of the main characters and although there were a few unexpected surprises, they embellished the narrative as a whole and any time where I was forced by personal.matters to put the story down I was always eager to get back to my reading!
A wonderful start to the series and I cannot wait to get started on book 2.

I am a long time Dungeons and Dragons player, and love the LitRPG genre, so I really looked forward to reading this book.
    It did not disappoint.
What a full on, fun and thrilling ride! The world is brilliantly detailed, the hero, Hector, is nuanced, complex and oh-so-real, all other characters are vibrant and detailed,
I absolutely loved this book and read it in a single sitting, unable to put it aside, until I was done.
I am now buying the second book in this wonderful series.
    I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

I like the setup and I really enjoy that the story is the primary focus.
A problem with a lot of litrpg books is that they focus almost entirely on stats and the player grinding.
This book? Actually has a plot, and while the character gains powers and skills they feel more like a nice embellishments.

It's not super deep, but I read for entertainment and I was entertained.
