Here’s the set-up:

He’s the greatest spy of the Victorian era, but he’s met his match…

Almost since birth, Modo has been rigorously schooled as a secret agent. His master, a British Lord, took advantage of Modo’s unique shape-shifting talents, training him to morph from his unsightly, hunchbacked-self into anyone he liked. When Modo is teamed up with the beautiful Octavia, his reasons for wanting to shape-shift become, well, more complicated. He never wants her to see his true appearance.

Then urchins start disappearing from London streets, a high-ranking British Lord gets assassinated, and Modo comes face to face with a ruthless woman with a metal hand. It’s clear that a deadly, secret organization has the British Empire in its sights. It will take every ounce of skill, guts, and luck for the pair to survive.

Mission Clockwork is a steampunk-powered, action-packed adventure featuring brilliant heroes and bloody brilliant villains. It’s the first novel in the award-winning series from bestselling author Arthur Slade.

“In Dust, Art Slade has created a walk into another dimension. It is no wonder that the book has received such sterling reviews, as well as the Governor General’s Award and the Mr. Christie’s Book Award.

Here’s the set-up from Booklist:

Set in Saskatchewan during its dust-bowl years, Slade’s novel begins eerily as seven-year-old Matthew vanishes on his first walk into town alone. Matthew’s parents and the entire community appear to accept and forget his disappearance, but a strange set of circumstances leads his 11-year-old brother, Robert, to conclude that Matthew is still alive. It seems that Matthew’s disappearance, as well as the vanishing of several other area children, corresponds with the appearance of Abram Hamsich, a stranger who promises to build a rainmaking machine that will end the terrible drought. Hamsich soon has the whole town mesmerized, except for Robert (and his uncle), who gradually realizes Hamsich’s horrific true plans. Calling up Ray Bradbury’s 1962 classic Something Wicked This Way Comes and the legend of the immortal soulless wanderer, Slade’s haunting story shows the triumph of imperfect hope over manifest evil.

–Frances Bradburn

One Reviewer Notes:

“This book won the Governor General’s Literary Award back in 2001 for Children’s Literature. I loved it. Set in a small town in rural Saskatchewan of Horshoe something strange is going on. Robert’s younger brother has gone missing and soon no one seems to even remember him. The story set in a depression era dust bowl farm community, has many unique twists and turns.

“The strange things started happening when Abram Harisch arrived in town; he appears to be taking control of the townspeople through his magic, mirrors and bewitching nature. Harisch has promised the town a rain-making machine, and in following this dream they are slowing losing all they care about and don’t even notice. But Robert does and he knows he needs to avoid Harisch and figure out what is really going on or the whole town could be lost.”

–Stephen R. McEvoy, Top 500 Reviewer
