Here’s the set-up:

Lives of two soldiers clash together in a haunting tale of violence, love, sacrifice, and revenge, as a U.S. Marine and a Russian flight engineer trapped in Afghanistan struggle to out-run the ghosts of their pasts.

When one of them kills a family in the heat of battle, he smuggles the surviving infant back to the homeland, and begins a new life… fighting through the demons and the guilt.

Meanwhile, the other… the one whose family was killed sets out on a trail of revenge – to destroy the kin of the man who took his own.

“… the intelligence, quality, engaging story, and nuanced depiction of the characters and their world makes ‘One More Son’ a great piece of writing, that is both fresh and timeless.”

“…propels the narrative with wit and a highly evocative style that makes for seamless pacing.”

Saint Nick

by Fred Tribuzzo

Here’s the set-up:

Paul’s trendy spiritual ambitions have guttered, leaving him a burned-out, middle-aged bankruptcy lawyer. Now it’s almost Christmas, and the spirit world has decided to take Paul firmly in hand. Three iconic Native Americans of the nineteenth century, Black Elk, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, challenge Paul to a dream quest: no guarantee of safe return. It’s going to be a rough ride.

Fred Tribuzzo is a professional pilot who has flown aircraft from the J-3 Cub to the fastest corporate jet ever made-the Citation Ten. Currently flying a Boeing 737 Business Jet, his trips can range from thirty minutes to ten hours. It was on the far side of the world that he wrote Saint Nick.

Format:Paperback
In a blending of Native American spirituality with traditional Christian faith, Fred Tribuzzo’s slim volume relates the story of Paul, a middle-aged cynic about to see the bill on his self-centered life come due. A few days before Christmas finds Paul sitting home alone, playing video games before bed. Awaiting him is Christmas dinner with his mother and a reunion with his estranged son, home on leave from Iraq.

Picking up a dog-eared copy of “Black Elk Speaks” from his bedside table sets off a chain of events that awakens memories of his childhood and propels Paul into an alternative world where his heroes — Black Elk, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse — become flesh and blood characters. Each, in turn, challenges Paul’s cynical views, forcing him to see his life for what it is. But will Paul see the light, admit his faults, and find the courage to reverse a lifetime of cynicism and selfishness?

Trubuzzo’s writing style crisply moves the story forward, creates an eerie atmosphere in his dreamworld scenes, and provides a nostalgic view of Midwestern snowfall, last-minute holiday shopping and Christmas dinner with family.

A good read in any season, this seventy-three-page novella, with its Christmas message of redemption, promises to provide solace amid the harried holidays as well as an inspirational stocking stuffer for the book lovers on anyone’s gift list.

5.0 out of 5 stars February 7, 2011
Format:Paperback
I will not mirror other reviews in this space by repeating a narrative analysis, suffice to say that “Saint Nick” is a simple tale, simply and effectively told. Author Fred Tribuzzo wraps it up neatly without fanfare or excessive rhetoric. This tale does not need either. A terrific short read with a lot to say. Perfect for the holiday season, or, indeed, any time one desires a rich and satisfying literary experience. Good things do indeed come in small packages. I am awaiting Mr. Tribuzzo’s next literary effort with great anticipation.

Here’s the set-up:

Overcome by the weight of his own failure to live up to the world’s standard of success, to the point where he no longer cares about his own life, Ballard Davies decides that there is only one solution. He gets in his car and drives. He drives away from everything and everyone that he knows, in an effort to just start over. He doesn’t care where he’s headed; he just wants another chance to get it right. What he finds is beyond his imagination, as he befriends an exciting and eccentric cast of characters. From the divinely inspired to the rationalistic blowhards, everything is suddenly new for him. But there is one problem. He still cannot escape himself. What will it take for Ballard to overcome his own self-imposed limitations and live the adventure he feels he deserves? This is the journey he now travels, down a path where truth, love, desperation, honor, the forgiving and the righteous, the mystics and the scientists all battle for the chance to be given the foremost spot in the realm of his mind. Will the pain of loneliness and separation prevail, or will Ballard find something to live for?

Broken Angels (Eve of Light, Book 1)

by Harambee Grey-Sun
A speculative thriller woven with cosmic Lovecraftian weirdness, Broken Angels is the first book in a Metaphysical Fantasy series entitled Eve of Light. Metaphysical Fantasy is a subgenre that mixes action & adventure with philosophy & theology. Think Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, but with an urban fantasy setting and geared toward mature readers (age 16 and older).

Here’s the set-up:
Still grieving years after the butchery of his pregnant mother and kidnapping of his premature brother, Robert Goldner was just seventeen when he contracted the White Fire Virus. He prayed for the excruciating death most victims experience shortly after acquiring the STD. Instead he was cursed to live on, slowly dying, ridden with billions of parasites, and possessing a bizarre but limited ability to manipulate photons, the basic units of light. At age twenty, Robert still considers himself damned and confused, not the least because more and more surviving virus-carriers are calling themselves “angels”– God-blessed beings of light–his licentious partner Darryl Ridley being a prime example. But Robert attempts to shove the irritating mystery of it all to the gutters of his mind as he focuses on his mission as a Watcher agent, locating and recovering missing children in the Washington, D.C. area. When Robert and Darryl receive a hot tip on the location of a virus-infected girl who disappeared shortly after attempting to massacre half her high school, they prepare to chalk up another success. But when they instead find the girl’s best friend from school, beaten nearly to death, they become entwined in a conspiracy involving magick, bizarre creatures, fantastic realms beyond space and time, and even the death of God.Can two dying angels do anything to prevent the Apocalypse?
