Here's the set-up:
Maurice Marceau finds out from a former love (Margauritte) that he has
an illegitmate son (Maximilien) age 15 living in England and attending
Trinity College, at the University of Cambridge. Margauritte does not
ask Maurice for money but rather that he acknowledge Maximilien (Max for
short) as his son. Maurice makes some inquiries to the HeadMaster at
Trinity College and discovers the young man to be rather gifted in
Astronomy and Mathematics as well as in languages.
Maurice arranges to
meet this young man at his estate in Bavaria and discovers he can read
ancient Hebrew by sight. Maurice, a back channel financier to several
heads of state and sovereigns throughout Europe has sponsored several
expeditions to Egypt and Babylonia and hands an ancient parchment along
with a brass object excavated from a dried ancient lake written in
ancient Hebrew for his new son to read. Maximilien reads a section of
the parchment and the writings on the object perfectly. Maurice is
convinced about Maximilien's academic abilities and offers him a home
for both him and his mother in exchange for the continued effort into
understanding the manuscript and its association with the brass vessel.
Maximilien researches further and follows the mansucript to the letter
and discovers ancient wisdom and its use in governing the angelic and
demonic realms.
