Here's the set-up:
Azimuth is a trilogy that follows two stories. The outer story concerns
the work of a historian who has gathered together and recorded the
history of a famous magus from a dim and distant past. While he reads
this history to his royal listeners he becomes embroiled in sinister
plots against the court of the empire. Over time his role becomes that
of a spymaster. The inner story tells of a man who begins life as a
warrior and ends it as a magus. In each of the three Books there are
twenty two Tales in which he gains self- awareness and knowledge about
the nature of existence. The Tales are self-contained and brim full of
adventures from the physical to the metaphysical, from the familiar to
the extraordinary. Think Rider Haggard meets The Alchemist. Every
chapter is framed with a cryptic message and each Tale is forewarned and
forearmed with a card of portent. The ride through its pages is
gripping and full of suspense both for those who want pure escapism as
well as those who want an illumination of humankind's eternal wrestling
with meaning.
