(Ed. Note: What do we mean when we say that an author is the real thing? I submit my experience of having discovered James W. Hall’s novel Under Cover of Daylight courtesy of Carl Hiaasen sometime in the mid-90s. I picked it up in a used bookstore during a week in Key West and cracked it open in the backyard happy hour at the B&B where we were staying, with my feet and ankles in the pool and a regularly replenishable drink in my nonreading hand. There may have been a wheelbarrow involved in getting me back to my room that evening, but I didn’t stop reading until I had finished James W. Hall’s book and the fact that I didn’t need aspirin when I woke the next morning helped me to the conclusion that Hall would join Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard, and Charles Willeford as my re-entry guides for every future trip to South Florida. But that’s just me. Read the stories in Over Exposure for yourself. You’ll see. –S.W.)
“The real pleasures in Jim Hall’s books are the sensual ones of place and people. It’s the honest feel of South Florida, with all its menacing rhythms and contagious lassitude, that Hall nails down so well.”
–Carl Hiaasen, best-selling author
“Highly original and entertaining.”
–Elmore Leonard, best-selling author
Here’s the set-up:
A five-star collection of Short Stories set in Florida. Dark, twisted, sexy and violent. The men and women in these stories are passionate and wild and unpredictable, and the writing is fast and muscular. Dutch Leonard meets James Lee Burke. Includes the 2005 Edgar Award winning story “The Catch.”
One Reviewer Notes:
“James Hall’s writing is astringent, penetrating, and unfailingly gripping long after you read the last page…The story and the characters crackle like lingering currents of electricity in your mind.”
–Dean Koontz, best selling author
About the Author
James W. Hall was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky in 1947. He graduated from Florida Presbyterian College in 1969 with a B.A. in literature, and a deep love of Florida. He went on to earn an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, then did everything in his power to return to Florida. He found a job in Miami at Florida International University and stayed there for 36 years, teaching literature and creative writing. During that time he published four books of poetry, a collection of short stories, a book of essays, and seventeen novels–most of which feature an enigmatic loner named Thorn. Hall was a Fulbright professor in Spain and is the winner of both the Edgar Award and the Shamus.
He and his wife Evelyn and their three dogs divide their time between South Florida and western North Carolina.
