Thanks to longtime Kindle Nation reader Abby Sthaang who wrote in with this question:
Dear Steve,Thanks for all you do for Kindle owners. You definitely have one of the two best Kindle blogs! But I read recently on another Kindle blog that Amazon has done away with the Kindle Movers & Shakers list. Why would they do that? Say it ain’t so, Steve! I used to love using the Movers & Shakers list to spot hot new books in the Kindle Store.Sincerely,Abby S.
Well, thanks, Abby, for your question and also for your generous assessment of our place in the Kindlesphere. We’ll just keep trying harder.
Regarding the Kindle Movers & Shakers list, I noticed that death notice for the Kindle Movers & Shakers list, too, but let’s just say that rumors of the list’s death are premature: it’s still right there, every day, in the Kindle Store, and here’s a link:
While we’re at it, here are some other Kindle bestseller lists that it might be worth keeping bookmarks for:
- Kindle Store Bestsellers
- Kindle Accessories
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Newspapers Only
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Blogs Only
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Magazines & Journals Only
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Books Only
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Fiction
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Nonfiction
- Kindle Store Bestsellers: Hot New Releases (This includes titles released or revised within the past 90 days).
One caveat about the the Kindle Movers & Shakers list that might be worth keeping in mind. Frequently you’ll see that the top titles on the list have moved up by a factor of infinity because they are shown as being “previously unranked,” leading to the notion that are soaring to the top of the bestseller list in their first 24 hours. While this is true in a few cases, the majority of such listings are often books that migrated from “free” to “paid” in the past 24 hours, and frankly I can’t think of anything I would less rather do than pay $5 or $10 for a book that was free yesterday.
The key to getting that book free yesterday, of course, even if we say so ourselves, is checking our magical and revolutionary Kindle Nation Free Book Alert tool.
Finally, here’s another bestseller list feature that is well worth checking out: the Bestseller Archive for the Kindle Store. You can pick any week, month, or year since the Kindle Store was launched and see what titles sold the most copies. I’ve just chosen a random time period, but I find it fascinating to keep looking at the same list again, and again, and again.
