Here’s the set-up:
In Russell Brooks’s debut thriller, Pandora’s Succession, he explored the nightmarish scenario where trusted government officials committed the ultimate act of treason with the use of a hyperdeadly microbe. In his second novel, Chill Run, Brooks creates the worst case of a publicity stunt gone wrong: someone getting killed.
Have publicity stunts ever gone wrong? Yes. Take for example the Balloon Boy incident when Richard and Mayumi Heene plotted a global media hoax in which they convinced the world—including the National Guard—that their son had floated off in a weather balloon. The Heenes—who were hoping to get on a reality television show—are now facing sentencing for the 2009 incident. In 2007, Peter Berdovski and Sean Stevens were arrested after their publicity stunt to promote a cartoon show caused a bomb scare in Boston.
In Chill Run, Starving author Eddie Barrow, Jr, will do anything to get a book deal with a NYC publisher. Even if it means getting caught by the media while engaging in S&M with a female celebrity as a publicity stunt. What Eddie gets instead are details of a billion dollar fraud scheme from a suicidal client who’s fatally shot minutes later. Now on the run from the law and the killers, Eddie seeks help from two unlikely friends—an alcoholic and a dominatrix. With few resources, Eddie races to clear his name, expose the fraud scheme, and expose the killers before he becomes their next victim.
Chill Run is a story about greed and the lengths people would go in order to be successful. There’s the ambitious person living below the poverty line who will turn to acts of desperation to make it up to the top. There’s also the wealthy unscrupulous individual who’s motivated by greed who will defraud people who trust him in order to become wealthier. With Brooks’s engaging writing style, fast-paced plots that are full of twists—as was illustrated in Pandora’s Succession—Chill Run will attract young adult, mystery, and thriller readers, as well as his established fan base.
