Here’s the set-up for Kevin Manus-Pennings’ A Shore Too Far, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Princess Kara Asgrand is not only daughter to the king but also the greatest military mind of her era. Throughout the kingdom of Avandi and, indeed, the entire continent of Damendine, High General Kara is known as an unstoppable genius on the battlefield. No amount of genius, however, could have prepared Kara for the arrival of a wondrous fleet of great ships unlike anything ever seen. When the strange passengers disembark from the ships by the thousands, Kara is confronted with a sprawling tent city on Avandi’s shore. The visitors, the Kullobrini, weave a tale of a lost expedition and ships riddled with disease and beg time to cleanse their vessels.

As the days pass, however, holes appear in the Kullobrini’s story, and with every answer a new question arises. If the Kullobrini are hostile, they will cost Kara’s forces dearly. Regardless, Kara must defend her father’s kingdom, but she cannot ignore that her own life of war has made her judgment suspect.…

Kara must decide what are the limits of one people’s compassion for another? And how far should one people go to protect themselves? If she trusts the Kullobrini wrongly, she could lose her father’s kingdom, but if she chooses war because it is the answer she has come to expect then she could lose her soul.

From the reviewer:

“A Shore Too Far” is a very entertaining series debut which takes place on a secondary world with the usual pseudo-medieval society but with no magic so far. The novel is a first person narration from Kara Asgrand, daughter of the king of Avandi and commander in chief of the army.  Overall, A Shore Too Far (A+) is another very promising indie series debut which I recommend for a fast and very enjoyable read. I also want to note that the novel wraps up its main storyline so it’s a standalone from this point of view, but of course more is promised in the interesting universe created by the author.  Note: This review has been originally published on Fantasy Book Critic and all links and references are to be found there.   Liviu C.
