Here’s the set-up:

THE EMPEROR’S WOMAN is # 10 in the acclaimed mystery series set in eleventh-century Japan and featuring Sugawara Akitada. When Lady Masako, intended to be the emperor’s concubine, died at the bottom of a cliff near Prince Atsuhira’s private villa, the palace covered up the scandal. Months later, Akitada is drawn into the case when his best friend is accused of plotting against the emperor. Atsuhira, his alleged co-conspirator, refuses to defend himself. The mystery of the lady’s death unravels slowly, bringing danger to Akitada, whose household is already threatened by an ill-fated relationship between Genba and a prostitute which leads to his arrest for the brothel keeper’s murder.
Surrounded by a cast ranging from outcasts and assassins to noblewomen serving in the inner apartments of the imperial palace, Akitada not only delves into murky palace secrets, but his efforts to solve two murders require him to examine the many roles played by women in his society.

One Reviewer Notes

“I J Parker continues to provide great stories, well written and historically enlightening as we’ll as interesting. I am glad she is able, thru Amazon, to continue to get into print her novels about the Heian period adventures of Akitada. They are the best reads of this period and this genre that are in print (better even than Rohland’s one note villain). Not only do they thrill with their descriptions of early Japanese culture, but also with the development of our hero, Akitada, and many of the recurring characters around him and their facing and solving the “cases” they encounter. Thoroughly enjoyable reading.”
