Steven James earns the top spot among today’s latest additions to our Free Book Alert listings in the Kindle Store with his introduction of FBI agent Patrick Bowers in “a riveting thriller, the first of a planned trilogy….”
Speaking of riveting thrillers, here for the start of the school year is Phillip Voglen’s Mean Days, set against the backdrop of Central High….
MEAN DAYS is a riveting thriller that captures readers in the grip of its potentially news-at-ten plot and won’t let go until the shattering conclusion. As it explores the depth and poignancy of the human experience through the sardonic and amusing viewpoint of the assistant principal, Central High is like any other secondary school until violence erupts from within, and a seething ages-old cultural hatred launches a seemingly unstoppable assault. This time, the terrorists are after our children. The novel’s humor tempers the page-turning action-adventure thrust, providing a thoroughly satisfying experience. However, readers are all too aware of the approaching explosive danger that threatens the fictional, yet familiar and recognizable characters from their communities. MEAN DAYS reflects the honesty, humor, humanity, pathos, and potential violence to be found in society and its public institutions. 5 stars: High School was Never this Interesting! – by “Mike”
Phillip Voglen’s novel MEAN DAYS, is a humorous and suspenseful look at the growing problems that administrators, teachers, and students encounter at Central High School, a quiet and peaceful scholarly institution on the North Shore of Long Island. How many issues could possibly go awry at cushy Central High? In short, A LOT! Voglen intermingles a myriad of conflicts, ranging from an English teacher being accused of having an illicit affair with a student, to a major terrorist plot to poison the students of the high school.
The novel’s main character, Brian Scarlucci, is Central High’s Assistant Principal, who has to weave his way through subterfuges and problems provided by the gangs of the school, the colorful and entertaining teaching staff, and even Brian’s own administrative counterparts.
MEAN DAYS addresses many issues that high schools currently do face in today’s “mean world.” However, Voglen’s Scarlucci is a witty and sardonic figure, who constantly provides the reader with opportunities to laugh and understand the illogical and bureaucratic ways of the educational system. Voglen wastes no time with long introductions to the high school’s parade of interesting characters (there is even a mob boss!), and it will be hard to put the book down once you begin reading it. One can only hope that Brian Scarlucci will return for another academic year next September.
