Why Amazon Won't Acquire Barnes and Noble

One of the concerns that I’ve had about the Barnes and Noble Nook and eReader apps since launch is that buyers are investing a considerable amount to build an electronic library whose life expectancy has to be tied to the life expectancy of a company whose financial future is far from rose. The most recent B&N; news is that its Board of Directors has served notice that the company is, basically, up for sale to the highest bidder. This has led to a great deal of speculation about who might buy a controlling interest in BKS shares. Some have even speculated that Amazon might be interested in acquiring B&N;, but it won’t happen. As Michael Cader’s subscription-only Publisher’s Marketplace pointed out yesterday, such an acquisition would saddle Amazon with “undeniable sales tax nexus in all 50 states, producing what many customers would see as an automatic price increase. And it would likely bring antitrust scrutiny (and require disclosure of data) on both the physical book and ebook sides.”

Some bloggers have been complaining for a while now about Amazon’s refusal to provide comprehensive metrics on its Kindle hardware and content sales, but the company would be silly to disclose information that provides it with a competitive business advantage unless the array of disclosure pressures were to expand and intensify significantly.

(Editor’s Note: If you’ve been reading Kindle Nation for any length of time, you may be aware that I’m not a zombie novel guy. But I’ve been reading 33 A.D. and I can tell you that David McAfee is a gifted writer with an amazing command of history, plot, character, and pace. And perhaps most surprising to me — this is, in its own way, a reverent book. I think it may be one of those books that teaches its readers never to allow genre alone to guide them away from any work of fiction. –S.W.)

Jerusalem, 33 A.D. The vampires of the era have long sought to gain a foothold into Israel, but the faith of the local Jewish population has held them in check for centuries.

When one of their own betrays them to follow a strange young rabbi from Galilee, the elders of the vampire race dispatch Theron, a nine hundred year old assassin, to kill them both.

The rabbi’s name is Jesus. Killing him should be easy.

33 A.D. by David McAfee is a wildly original, non-stop pulse pounder that tells the story of a vampire assassin whose mission is to kill Jesus of Nazareth. In a genre mired by cliché stories, this stands out as something bold and new.”
Jeremy Robinson, author of Pulse and Instinct

“David McAfee’s 33 A.D. is a truly compelling and unique perspective on the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. With all the skill of a seasoned novelist, McAfee’s thriller brings a melange of riveting characters, otherworld mythology, and political intrigue together in one fascinating read – a tautly paced winner on all levels.”
Jon F. Merz, author of the Lawson Vampire novels & Parallax

“This story is an action-packed thriller, filled with mystery, intrigue, betrayal and murder. The attention to detail and careful plotting are masterfully done. You’d never guess this was David McAfee’s first novel.”
Jess Haines, author of Hunted by the Others

The Postcard Killers (Special Free Preview: Book One) by James Patterson and Liza Marklund

(That’s the good news. The bad news is that Patterson and his agency model publisher, Hachette, have priced pre-orders for the ebook’s August 16 release at the exorbitant and unsustainable price of $14.99.)

Paris is stunning in the summerNYPD detective Jacob Kanon is on a tour of Europe’s most gorgeous cities. But the sights aren’t what draw him–he sees each museum, each cathedral, and each cafe through the eyes of his daughter’s killer.

The killing is simply marvelous
Kanon’s daughter, Kimmy, and her boyfriend were murdered while on vacation in Rome. Since then, young couples in Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and Stockholm have been found dead. Little connects the murders, other than a postcard to the local newspaper that precedes each new victim.

Wish you were here
Now Kanon teams up with the Swedish reporter, Dessie Larsson, who has just received a postcard in Stockholm–and they think they know where the next victims will be. With relentless logic and unstoppable action, The Postcard Killers may be James Patterson’s most vivid and compelling thriller yet.

All I Ever Wanted
by Ellen Fisher

$2.99 today in the Kindle Store!

Maxfield Sinclair, the author of a popular science fiction series, is revered by fans everywhere as “The Creator.” Drew Cooper, a snobbish literature professor, isn’t impressed with Max’s books, or with Max himself, for that matter. As Drew gets to know Max, however, she realizes there’s more to the shy, awkward writer than meets the eye. But can a woman who enjoys escargot and caviar fall in love with a guy who thinks fine cuisine means supreme instead of pepperoni?

“Ellen Fisher writes beautifully … snappy dialogue, nice pacing and richly defined characters … breezy, sexy and fun with a really dreamy hero…I would highly recommend All I Ever Wanted.” – Debbie, Romance Reader at Heart

“…thoroughly enjoyable … engaging and in-depth characters … all around wonderful writing … what more could we ask for?” – Tracey West, The Road to Romance

How to Start Building Your Kindle Library While You’re Waiting for Your Kindle

Are you among the millions of avid readers who may be receiving a new Kindle 3G, Kindle Wi-Fi, or Kindle DX between August 27 and the last week of December?

If so, you may not be aware that, even if you don’t own a Kindle already, you can begin building your Kindle library as soon as Amazon confirms that they have received your order.

For that matter, you can begin building your Kindle library even if you haven’t ordered a Kindle at all, by downloading the free Kindle software and registering a compatible device with the Kindle Store. (Of course this only applies to people who have access to a PC, Mac, BlackBerry, Android-compatible device, iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. If you don’t have any of these devices, you should probably stop reading this blog.)

Why would you want to spend any time building your Kindle library before you have your new Kindle?

Well, for starters, it could save you a ton of money on great reading. Each month there are dozens of new free ebook listings in the Kindle Store, and many of the best ones last only a few days. Once your Kindle arrives you’ll probably want to subscribe to the Kindle edition of Kindle Nation Daily to make sure you receive our Free Book Alerts — and other posts like this one — but until then you can keep up with our posts online. (Kindle Nation Daily: The inside scoop on all things Kindle is the #1 bestselling blog in the Kindle Store and it’s only 99 cents a month with a free 14-day trial to get you started.)

No Kindle Required: How to Begin Building Your Kindle Library

Within hours of placing your Kindle order, you will receive an email from “Amazon Kindle Support” welcoming you to Amazon Kindle. Once you receive this email, your Kindle has already been automatically registered to the same Amazon.com account you used to make your purchase. This enables you to shop, purchase, and download books, newspapers and magazines — not only “wirelessly from your Kindle right out of the box,” but before you even get the box.

Payment. You can begin making Kindle purchases immediately using your existing default 1-Click payment method at Amazon.com. To establish, view or change the payment method associated with your Kindle, visit the Manage Your Kindle page on Amazon.com. To purchase a gift card that will become your default payment fund for Kindle purchases as long as a balance remains available, click here.

Free Book Alerts. To see the latest listings of free promotional titles that are temporarily available to purchase whether you have a Kindle or not, check out the latest Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alerts here.

A Choice of Devices. Whenever you purchase any Kindle book, blog, periodical, or news feed, you will see a pull-down menu right next to the Buy button that allows you to choose where you would like to send your download. For many Kindle owners, the only choice listed is a single Kindle. But if you have multiple Kindles or have downloaded and registered a free Kindle App for a PC, Mac, BlackBerry, Android-compatible device, iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, those choices will be shown.

Your Kindle Archive. Once you purchase and download a Kindle ebook, you own a license to read that book on any Kindle-compatible device that is registered to your account (although that license is subject to some limitations regarding the number of devices). Even if you download the ebook originally to your Kindle, the ebook remains in your Archived Kindle Items and you can later download it and read it on any other device. The same applies if you download it originally to another device and later want to read it on your Kindle. So, the good news here is that, if you begin building a Kindle library in advance of your Kindle’s shipment, you don’t have to wait for the Kindle to arrive to begin reading.

No Kindle Required. One misleading statement that you will see often in news and blog stories about the Kindle is that the free Kindle apps for other devices “allow readers to read Kindle books that they’ve previously downloaded to their Kindles.” It isn’t that the statement isn’t true. It’s just that it is only half the story. All of those apps also allow you to purchase, download, and read a Kindle book even if you’ve never owned or ordered a Kindle.

Free Samples. Once you have a Kindle account at Amazon.com, with any qualifying device including a computer or smartphone, you will also be able to download free samples of any Kindle books that you’re considering for later. If a Kindle book is free or available at a bargain price, you won’t want to bother with the sample. But downloading and checking out samples of market-priced ebooks can be a good way of managing what can sometimes be an overwhelming list of ebooks in which you are interested.

Blogs and Periodicals. You’ll want to wait until you have a Kindle in hand before you subscribe to periodicals or blogs like Kindle Nation Daily, since — as of right now — you can’t access these downloads via Kindle apps on devices other than the Kindle itself.

Accessories and Warranties. If you’re concerned that your Kindle will arrive naked and unprotected, you may want to check out the Kindle Accessories Store for accessories like the new Kindle lighted cover in a choice of seven colors. You can also scope out Amazon’s Extended Warranties for the Kindle, which have been reduced 15 to 25 percent bucks in price since the new Kindles were announced.

Of course, if you started out reading this post with no intentions of buying a Kindle and you’ve ended up downloading dozens of Kindle books to your iPad or BlackBerry, I’m sorry.

Sooner or later you’re going to buy a Kindle 3G, Kindle Wi-Fi, or Kindle DX.

Independent Authors Unite in New Association

For authors and readers interested in what’s going on with the new breed of indie authors, here’s a press release from a new organization called the Association of Independent Authors, which I am proud to serve as a member of the volunteer board of directors:
Independent Authors Unite at the Association of Independent Authors Where Professionalism is Key in a Changing Landscape
At the forefront of the biggest change in publishing for generations is the AiA, a global membership organization formed to advance the interests of the new majority

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) August 3, 2010 — The Association of Independent Authors presents a clear vision of the future in publishing – independence is the preferred, and first choice for all authors. To achieve this, the AiA engenders a culture of excellence, teamwork and professionalism in a supportive community environment.
“The publishing industry is undergoing monumental changes,” says spokesperson Melanie Walsh, “including an ongoing exponential growth in e-book sales, a change in book buying trends, and a new generation of readers who want everything now on their reading device.”
The AiA plans to be at the forefront of this change, representing authors who choose independence over traditional publishing. “It seems difficult for some people in the industry to understand and accept, but there is a large contingent of new-breed authors who choose to self-publish up-front because it is best for them. It’s not a case of settling for an easier alternative,” says AiA administrator, Cara Edwards. AiA member Zoe Winters explains this attitude in her video series, “Zoe Who?”
Planning is underway for the AiA’s inaugural conference to be held in San Francisco in July 2012. A Call for Submissions has now been issued, and given the quality of early responses, organizers expect to deliver a relevant, valuable program on all aspects of self-publishing. Interested speakers have until 1 November 2010 to make a submission on a range of topics including market forces, the process, design, technology, professionalism, and innovation. A strong delegation of independent authors is also expected, and a social program will be a highlight of the three-day conference.
The AiA is pleased to announce the following additional member releases for summer:
Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semi-finalist, Karen Cantwell releases Take the Monkeys and Run: A Barbara Marr murder mystery about a soccer mom and film lover, who is on the brink of a dream: launching her own movie review website. However, on her 45th birthday, this stay-at-home mother of three unwittingly launches herself and her suburban housewife friends into the middle of their own explosive action adventure just like the movies–except these bullets are real.
Al Qaeda plans to attack Minnesota’s Prairie River Nuclear Power Plant as a means to return the downtrodden terrorist organization to international prominence in John L. Betcher’s, The 19th Element: A James Becker thriller. The first book in the series, “The Missing Element” was similarly based in John’s hometown in the Mississippi River community of Red Wing, Minnesota where he has practiced law for the past 25 years.
Lauren Carr fell in love with mysteries the moment her mother read Perry Mason to her at bedtime as a child. It’s Murder My Son is her third book and the first in The Mac Faraday Mysteries set in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, where Lauren and her family often go for vacations. Having inherited a mansion in Spencer, Maryland, Mac Faraday is about to realize the closed gate community he is about to join has more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. With the help of his late mother’s journal, this retired cop puts all his detective skills to work to pick up where the local investigators have left off.
About the Association of Independent Authors
The Association of Independent Authors (http://www.independent-authors.org/) is a membership organization of independent authors predominantly from the USA, Canada, Asia, UK and Australia. Membership is also open to authors who have published traditionally who are now planning to publish their future work, and reverted rights, independently. Directors of the AiA are Stephen Windwalker and April Hamilton (USA), Fiona Ingram (South Africa), Kev C. Webb (Australia), and Leigh K Cunningham (Singapore). There are currently three Fellows: JA Konrath, RW Ridley, and Stephen Windwalker.
